Nirvana Brings Two Classic Albums Back To The Charts

Even with just a few albums to the band's name, Nirvana's ability to hold on and find positions on multiple charts is special. As this week's U.K. music rankings show, the group's catalog still connects in a major way with a huge audience, which is willing to listen however they can.
The legendary outfit doesn't claim a massive discography, and in the decades since the group disbanded, the steady drip of additional content has remained small. But what Nirvana lacked in quantity, it more than made up for in impact.
More than 30 years after the band's breakthrough, fans are still streaming, buying, and rediscovering everything the grunge pioneers ever shared. This frame, four different Nirvana projects appear on various U.K. albums rankings — and two of them manage to return, proving once again that even a handful of projects can go a very long way.
Among the two Nirvana albums that stage comebacks this week, Nevermind is the higher-rising of the pair. The band's blockbuster collection reappears on the Official Vinyl Albums chart at No. 37. That return brings the group back to the top 40 on one of the U.K.'s most specific tallies.
Nevermind doesn't only land on the one tally this week. The classic title appears inside the top 40 on four separate charts in the U.K. This frame, it reenters both the Official Album Sales and Official Physical Albums rankings at No. 37, matching its placement on the Vinyl Albums tally. Over on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, the full-length climbs three spaces to No. 5.
The other Nirvana collection to rejoin the U.K. charts this week is In Utero. While it doesn't perform as well as Nevermind, the album still manages to break back onto a pair of rankings. The title appears at No. 88 on the Official Physical Albums list and No. 95 on the Official Album Sales tally. At the same time, it pushes forward on the Official Rock & Metal Albums roster, lifting three rungs to No. 16.
While Nevermind and In Utero are the only Nirvana releases that return in any fashion, two other efforts from the band are also present. The self-titled compilation Nirvana dips slightly on the Official Albums chart to No. 89, but it improves on the Official Albums Streaming ranking, moving up to No. 77. Meanwhile, Unplugged in New York — the live project released shortly after Kurt Cobain's death — rises from No. 26 to No. 19 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums ranking.

Metallica's Self-Titled Album Reaches An Incredible Milestone

It's a big week for Metallica on the charts in the United Kingdom. The hard rock group is one of several acts from that side of the music business that maintains a constant presence on at least one or two tallies at a time, but this period is especially thrilling for the band, as Metallica returns to multiple rankings with both albums and songs. What may be regarded as perhaps its most successful full-length — at least when looking at commercial metrics — reaches an incredible milestone as it reappears. Metallica's self-titled album is a bestselling release again this week in the U.K. The decades-old set reappears on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart, landing at No. 37. As it returns, Metallica hits an incredible landmark figure. As of this frame, the full-length has spent 1,000 weeks as one of the top 40 bestselling rock releases in the country. Metallica is the first release by the band of the same name to reach a four-digit-stay count on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart. Only one other project by the group, Master of Puppets, has cracked triple digits, as it has thus far accrued 144 weeks on the tally. Metallica has even managed more weeks on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart than all of the band's other efforts combined. As the self-titled project reaches 1,000 weeks on the tally, it joins just three other projects that are currently present on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart that have accomplished the same showing. Nirvana's Nevermind leads the ranking with 1,453 stays. Guns N' Roses have kept Appetite for Destruction on the list for 1,222 periods, while Linkin Park's debut full-length Hybrid Theory recently joined this group, and is now up to 1,032 turns on the roster. Metallica only scores one hit album in the U.K. this week, but a pair of successful tunes help the band make itself heard. "Enter Sandman" returns to the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, pushing from No. 13 to No. 7. The group doubles up on the tally, as "Nothing Else Matters" reappears in last place at No. 40.

Tony Iommi Charts His First Solo Top 40 Hit Thanks To An Unlikely Feature

Tony Iommi joins Robbie Williams on 'Rocket,' earning his first solo top 40 hit in the United ... More Kingdom on multiple sales charts. Guitarist Tony Iommi is shown performing on stage during a live concert appearance with Black Sabbath on August 8, 2013. (Photo by)"n Tony Iommi is regarded as a god in the rock world, and has been for decades. He first rose to prominence as one of the founding members of Black Sabbath and, for years, he helped bring heavy metal to the masses with his signature guitar sound. While he's primarily known for his work with that group, Iommi does occasionally release music under his own name. The superstar scores a hit song in his home country of the United Kingdom this week by teaming up with a somewhat surprising figure. Iommi earns a top 40 hit on both the Official Singles Downloads and Official Singles Sales charts this frame. He joins Robbie Williams on the track "Rocket," which opens at Nos. 34 and 36, respectively, on those tallies, becoming a top 40 bestseller in the nation. It appears that "Rocket" is Iommi's first solo hit on both of those rankings. As a member of Black Sabbath, he's only reached the lists once, as "Paranoid" spent one frame on the rosters in August 2022. Of course, it's worth mentioning that these tallies didn't exist during the heyday of the heavy metal act. Iommi has landed more than one solo placement on the Official Rock & Metal Albums roster with his solo collections, but those titles didn't produce any hit songs across the Atlantic. "Rocket" serves as the lead single from Williams's upcoming album Britpop. It's interesting that the first taste of a full-length named after a style of pop music from the U.K. wouldn't typically be classified under that genre, and would feature one of the most recognizable figures in metal — but that's Williams, playing another one of his jokes. While Iommi may be new to these rankings, Williams has already scored a number of hits. The pop icon has racked up a dozen smashes on the Official Singles Sales chart and well over two dozen on the Official Singles Downloads list. A top 40 start is impressive for Iommi but rather low for Williams, one of the most successful pop stars in U.K. history. The tune doesn't reach the main list of the most consumed songs — the Official Singles chart — at least not yet, which is a bit disappointing.

Green Day Rocks Back To No. 1

Green Day's Saviors returns to No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart after the ... More deluxe edition drops, giving fans new music. (Photo by Frederic J. Brown / AFP) (Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images) It's been almost a year and a half since Green Day released its most recent album Saviors, but fans are clearly still excited about the project. The pop-punk legends recently dropped the highly-anticipated deluxe edition of the set, which they'd been promoting for months with new tunes. Sales of the title grew dramatically, and this week the Grammy winner's latest full-length returns to multiple rankings and even brings the band back to the top spot on one tally in the United Kingdom. Saviors reappears at No. 1 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart this week. The full-length hadn't been seen on this list since January, when it spent two frames in the lower reaches of the top 40 before disappearing. Last week's champion, Will You Haunt Me, with That Same Patience by Bury Tomorrow, descends dramatically, dipping from No. 1 to No. 26 in just its second frame on the tally. Now that it's back at No. 1, Saviors earns just its second stay in the penthouse on the list of the top-selling rock and metal releases in the U.K. Green Day debuted the project atop the tally in early February 2024. The set attempted to earn more time on the throne, living in the runner-up space for the next month, but it was unable to lead again until the release of its deluxe edition. Saviors only manages to reenter the top 10 on one of the five U.K.-based rankings where it finds a home at the moment. It returns this frame to each of them, after not appearing on any of the rosters just days ago. The set breaks back into the top 20 on the Official Physical Albums, Official Albums Sales, and Official Vinyl Albums charts, appearing at Nos. 13, 14, and 19, respectively. The title doesn't perform nearly as well when it comes to purchases on platforms like iTunes, as Saviors finds its way back to the Official Album Downloads roster, but only at No. 45. In the past, Saviors has reached No. 1 on each and every one of the charts on which it appears in the United Kingdom. It has understandably spent the most time on the Official Rock & Metal Albums list, racking up 39 frames. It has yet to manage 20 appearances on any of the other rosters.
