'Our job is to protect a fort - to be fair it hasn't been attacked lately'
Royal Hillsborough will play host on Saturday to the warrant ceremony of 13 new members, bringing the United Kingdom's oldest and smallest private army back up to its full complement.
The Hillsborough Fort Guard was formed by Colonel Arthur Hill, he built the fort in 1660.
But its members have only a ceremonial role.
"Our job is to protect the fort and to be fair, it hasn't been attacked recently," Simon Walker, a corporal in the guard, told BBC News NI.
The guard has a centuries-long history, although it has not always been well populated.
During the Plantation of Ulster, King Charles II granted a Royal Charter to have 20 soldiers to protect Hillsborough Fort.
Since that time, Mr Walker says, sometimes only one man has kept the guard going.
"But the tradition has never ended," he says.
The Investiture of Warrants ceremony is a rare historical moment as Hillsborough Fort Guard welcomes its first full complement of 20 warders since the late Victorian period.
Dressed in their new bespoke uniforms, the warders will parade up Park Street, onto Dromore Road and down Main Street to Hillsborough Parish Church to music by the band of the Royal Irish Regiment.
"The last time that it had 20 men, my great grandfather was one of the warders," Mr Walker said.
The Guard takes pride in the village and strives to improve community spirit and increase tourism.
Warder Trevor Hill said: "We are very much centrally based within the community, we do various walking tours and presentations, and we also run bingo nights, which is great for getting the community together."
"I think will be brilliant for the village, the whole district, and just a wonderful experience, a once in a lifetime opportunity," he said.
Arthur Nicholas Hill, 9th Marquess of Downshire leads the Guard, he said this will be the first time in living memory that they will be at full strength.
"There is nearly 400 years of history in this Guard," he said.
Mr Hill selects who becomes a warder, and they must be from County Down.
"The large majority of them have all done some public service, not necessarily be in the army as some have been in the fire service or the police or the prison service."
The future is bright for the regiment as the quota will be filled.
"We haven't yet got our first lady member, but we have one in our sights. So that could be exciting as well that would be a new part of history."

Charity wrongfully dismissed naturalist
An employment tribunal has ruled that a charity wrongfully dismissed its former conservation officer. Nigel Middleton worked for the Hawk and Owl Trust (HOT) for more than two decades and helped develop the Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve which opened in 2003. Mr Middleton, who has appeared on BBC Radio as a nature expert, said when he realised his job was at risk, "I was gutted, I was devastated because this wasn't just a job for me". HOT said it recognised that the tribunal found "its processes were unfair" and that the charity would seek to learn lessons from this experience. In November 2022 Mr Middleton raised issues with the charity's trustees about the way in which the organisation was being run by chief operations director, Adrian Blumfield. The concerns covered staff and volunteer treatment and payments being made to employees leaving the charity. Following this, the tribunal heard, Mr Blumfield and the charity trustees decided Mr Middleton "had to go". The judge said what followed was a "woeful tale of unfairness in process". After raising the concerns Mr Middleton was told his performance was being investigated. In February 2023 he was informed the scope and hours of his job were being changed and he was subsequently suspended, pending a disciplinary hearing. In May that year he received an email telling him the disciplinary process was being withdrawn and 20 minutes later he received a second email telling him he was dismissed with immediate effect. While Mr Middleton's unfair dismissal claim was upheld by the judge, his claim that he was acting as a whistleblower by raising his concerns with the trustees was not. Mr Middleton said: "Sculthorpe was something quite special. A place that had a real opening for people and nature. I'm hoping that legacy will still carry on." He said he now plans to work with farmers and landowners to help create new raptor habitats. Dr Andrew McCulloch, the chair of HOT, said: "The Hawk and Owl Trust is disappointed by the findings of the tribunal, particularly given that its actions were guided by independent professional HR advice. "While the tribunal rightly dismissed the whistleblowing allegations as being entirely unfounded and without merit, it upheld the unfair dismissal claim due to procedural shortcomings." The BBC reached out to Mr Blumfield for comment. Following that request a spokesperson for the trust said: "The charity will be reflecting on the judge's comments, seeking to learn lessons from this experience, while ensuring that our focus remains on our critical conservation work and delivery of our charitable objectives." Road closed as crews tackle recycling centre fire
A road has been closed while firefighters tackle a blaze at a recycling centre in Worksop. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Claylands Avenue at 00:54 BST on Wednesday. Five fire engines, two water carriers and a command support vehicle remained at the scene at 06:00. Claylands Avenue has been closed by Nottinghamshire Police from the A57, with access to the business park from Gatesford Road. A spokesperson for the fire service said there had been no reports of any injuries. They added: "We will have a presence on site for most of the day as we continue to dampen down." The staggering number of families helped by this year's free school uniform giveaway
More than 100 families have been helped by the annual free school uniform giveaway which took place on Monday and Tuesday. Over the last three years Lend a Hand has been organising the day which takes place every August, where families can pick up uniform items, stationery and equipment thanks to the generosity of local people. Denise Silcock from the organisation said: "We have helped well over a hundreds families this year. "They Mayor and Mayoress also dropped by. "The feedback we have received has been incredible, people have been so touched. "We had one person come in to donate a uniform her child had grown out of and picked up a bigger size - that is the ultimate in recycling. We have had so much donated this year, and people have been so generous. "Everything is so expensive these days so this really does help. The volunteers have been working all weekend to get everything organised, they have not stopped. "A massive thank you must go to all the amazing local businesses organisations and amazing people for supporting this year and helping us help lots of families in the Heart of the Community. The free school uniform day took place at Brazley Community Centre, Cedar Avenue Horwich.
