Chaos erupts at Johnstone Burgh game as young supporters kick-off with club claiming fans 'provoked'
Shocking scenes of crowd trouble marred Johnstone Burgh's crunch Junior Cup semi-final against Largs Thistle on Saturday.
Bottles and other objects appeared to be thrown as a large group of mainly young supporters clashed with opposition fans and stewards following a late Largs goal.
In astonishing scenes, several Burgh players vaulted the perimeter fence to enter the crowd and try to calm their brawling fans. In footage circulating widely online, stewards were also seen to grapple with some crowd members.
One supporter at the match, commentating as he filmed footage of the scenes, was heard to say: 'It's absolutely unbelievable. They're chucking things now. This is ridiculous. It's not going to be long before the polis turn up.'
As Burgh players, including captain Derek Esplin, dashed into the crowd to try and calm their fans, the supporter added: 'There's a player coming in now. Johnstone Burgh players are coming in to sort it out.
'That's how bad it is. It's the captain of Johnstone Burgh. Have you ever seen anything like this in your life? It's nothing short of disgraceful. I've been to over 900 football games and I've never seen anything like that.'
The match was briefly stopped by the referee amid the chaotic scenes at the cup tie attended by a bumper crowd of around 2,000 fans.
Order was restored, thanks in no small way to the efforts of the Burgh players, with the game finishing 1-0 to Largs.
A Burgh source said yesterday: 'There is footage which captures one part of the incident but, just before it, an opposition supporter runs some distance to the shed where the children are, and goads them following the goal.
'What happens next is not good, of course, but the club has worked so hard over the past five years to build itself up. We had ample security in place although there was no segregation, which is a positive aspect of football at this level, and unfortunately a small number of people have caused the scenes which we saw. The vast majority of our young fans are great children.'
Scottish football at all levels this season has also seen rising numbers of young fans wearing black clothing, and styling themselves as 'Ultras' with some instances of disorder and pyrotechnics use sparking condemnation from police.
The match, the first leg of the Junior Cup semi-final, kicked-off at 5.30pm at Keanie Park on Saturday. The second leg sees Largs host Burgh on May 18 at Barrfields Park, with a 2pm kick-off.
Johnstone Burgh said in a statement: 'The club do not condone antisocial or aggressive behaviour from supporters of any age.
'However, it is crucial that people understand this was a situation where adult males aggressively provoked a group of teenagers, and any reaction should be viewed within that context.
'Appropriate stewarding was in place for the expected attendance, and we commend our security team for their swift and professional handling of the situation. It is deeply regrettable that one of our stewards was assaulted in the process.
'Inquiries are ongoing, and any individuals identified as having engaged in violence or antisocial behaviour will be banned from Keanie Park.
'We remain committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming and respectful environment for all supporters, particularly the younger members of our community.'
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: 'Around 7.35pm on Saturday, police were called to a disturbance at a football ground in Auchenlodment Road, Johnstone.
'The groups had dispersed on police arrival and there were no further reports of any people being injured.'
It's understood no further police action is planned in relation to the incident. Largs Thistle were approached for comment.

Aberdeen transfer latest: Why Marko Lazetic has swapped AC Milan for Aberdeen
Marko Lazetic is determined to repay the faith shown in him by Aberdeen after completing his move to Pittodrie. The Serbia under-21 international has left AC Milan to move to the Dons on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The Dons have been on the trail of Lazetic since January, and the striker insists the club's desire to bring him to Scotland sold him on Jimmy Thelin's side. Lazetic said: 'It feels amazing to finally be here. It was a long process where I was waiting for things to happen, but I'm finally here, happy to be here and ready to get to work. 'The first interest was in January and I liked the project they had then, but it didn't happen due to the other club I was at. 'But then the summer came and they called again saying they wanted to get me. I saw the desire, so I wanted to be here as soon as possible. 'We had a hard time getting the deal agreed, but I wanted to be here. 'I spoke to Nuno (de Almeida), the head of recruitment, then the manager and (director of football) Steven (Gunn), and felt the same energy about everything – I loved the way they talked about me and did the analysis on me. 'It's a place I feel I can grow a lot. 'It's important to be wanted at a place where you are going and be accepted from the moment you come here.' Lazetic, who began his career at Red Star Belgrade, moved to Italy in 2022 in a £3.5million transfer. Since being at Milan he has had loan spells in the Netherlands with Fortuna Sittard, Austrian Bundesliga club Rheindorf Altach and last season back in his homeland with TSC Backa Topola. The forward, who is awaiting his UK visa so that he can make his debut for the club, believes the Dons will give him the platform to be a success in Scotland – and on the European stage. The 21 year-old told RedTV: 'The Scottish league is a great league where I think I can excel. 'European football is a great opportunity as well. I played last year on loan with TSC in the Conference League and hopefully this year I can make the step up and fight for the Europa League. 'It's a great opportunity and experience for a young player to play in that. 'I never like to talk about myself and what kind of player I am. People can see for themselves. 'But I will bring a lot of physicality and fight, and hopefully goals and trophies. 'I will try to help the team in the best way possible. My job as a striker is to score goals and try to win trophies here. 'I'm really excited. I love the fans, the intensity and the craziness about it. I can't wait to get out and play at Pittodrie.' Dons boss Thelin is thrilled to finally have Lazetic on board after a move for the player failed to materialise in the January window. The Aberdeen manager is confident his new recruit, the ninth of the summer window, will be a success, but will need time to adapt to his new surroundings. Thelin said: 'We've been monitoring Marko for a while and are very pleased to have secured his signature. 'He has a fantastic pedigree and, despite his young age, has played at high level in different leagues across Europe. 'We will have to be realistic in our expectations with Marko as it will take him a bit of time to get up to match sharpness and integrate into our way of working. 'His pre-season has been a little frustrating due to the uncertainty surrounding his future, but he's shown great patience and now he's finally arrived we're delighted to get down to the hard work with him to get him up to speed. 'We believe he will be an excellent addition to our squad. 'He has an imposing physical presence; good technical ability and he will provide versatility and competition for places ahead of a busy season. 'We believe we can unlock some of the undoubted raw materials that he has to make him a potent threat for Aberdeen.'

How Liverpool star Mo Salah is helping motivate Dunfermline Athletic midfielder Alfons Amade
Alfons Amade is convinced Dunfermline can reap the rewards of his international experiences taking on global superstars. The summer signing is still finding his feet with the Pars but made his Scottish league debut as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Airdrie last time out. It was a far cry from the glamour of his outings at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals with Mozambique in January last year. Amongst his opponents in three starts were Liverpool icon Mohamed Salah, Manchester City's Omar Marmoush, Spurs signing Mohammed Kudus, and Leicester City's Jordan Ayew. Mozambique failed to progress for the knockout stages, with a 97th-minute Salah penalty costing them victory against Egypt in their opening group game. However, with the 'Os Mambas' qualifying for the 2025 tournament, which kicks off in December, Amade admits his international challenges are helping to motivate his drive for success at club level. 'It's different on the international level but it's a nice experience,' said the 25-year-old. 'I think it's improving me as a player as well. 'Not only to play with (good players), but also to play against them. The environment is different. It's a good experience. 'I take it for my career, for my life, for everything. This is something I learned there. I'm happy about it. 'Nobody can take (the Africa Cup of Nations) from me because I experienced this. 'This is also something that motivates you to improve more. It's not about just being nice or to enjoy (playing) against big players. 'It's about winning against them, no matter who their name is or who the opponent is. 'This is something that I can do not only on an international level, but also in the league or in the cup. It's something that I have learned for myself.' Amade was born in Germany and played internationally there at youth level as he came through the ranks at Hoffenheim. However, after leaving for Oostende in Belgium in search of first-team experience, he made the decision to switch allegiance to Mozambique. With Chiquinho Conde's team being drawn against Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Gabon in this year's tournament, there is plenty for Amade to look forward to internationally. But, with a televised Fife derby fast approaching on Friday, the midfielder has his sights set only on Dunfermline for the time being. 'Obviously, this year there will be a big tournament. But, for now, it's far away for me,' added Amade, who joined the Pars on a two-year deal last month. 'I'm just focusing now on Dunfermline. I will see how the season will go. 'I personally look at it from step to step. Dunfermline, the club, everything is new. I still need to adapt. I still need to know the players on the pitch, off the pitch, the coach as well. 'This is the only thing I'm focusing on right now.'
