Syria calls for international action against Israel

Shafaq News03-04-2025

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, Syria condemned Israeli airstrikes on its territory, calling them a blatant violation of international law and an unjustified escalation aimed at destabilizing the country.
"The repeated Israeli attacks are a deliberate attempt to normalize violence inside Syria," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, urging the international community to pressure Israel to halt its aggression.

Earlier, Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes on multiple sites across Syria, including the Scientific Research Center in Damascus' Barzeh district, according to Syrian and Israeli media. Explosions were reported at Hama Military Airport, while Israeli strikes also targeted areas near the airport and the vicinity of the T4 Military Airbase in eastern Homs countryside. Medical sources told Syria's state-run SANA news agency that several people were wounded in the attacks.
The Israeli military confirmed the strikes, stating that it had targeted military capabilities in the areas of Hama and the T4 airbase, along with several military installations near Damascus.

7 Alawites missing in Damascus amid rising tensions

Shafaq News/ Seven Syrian citizens from the Alawite community have disappeared in Damascus, stirring concerns over their fate and casting a fresh spotlight on the challenges faced by Syria's Alawite minority since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Sunday that the missing individuals were last seen returning from work at a restaurant in Qasioun Mall, Barzeh district. Activists reported losing contact with them around 3 a.m. when their daily transport vehicle entered Ash al-Warwar neighborhood, an Alawite stronghold in the capital. Later that morning, the vehicle was found abandoned near the Police Hospital along the international highway, with no trace of them. Since al-Assad's ouster, Syria's Alawite community has faced intensified violence, political marginalization, and economic decline. The Alawites, once a pillar of al-Assad's security apparatus, have found themselves vulnerable to retribution and systemic challenges. Reports indicate that more than 1,383 Alawite civilians have been killed in retaliatory attacks since the regime's collapse. Thousands more have fled traditional strongholds in Latakia and Tartus, fearing reprisals from armed opposition groups. Alawite religious sites have also been targeted, including the torching of the revered shrine of al-Khasibi in Aleppo, sparking protests in Alawite-majority areas.

PUK's head urges Baghdad to resolve Kurdistan salaries

Shafaq News/ The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) head Bafel Talabani said on Sunday that he has been in direct contact with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to address the ongoing salary crisis for public employees in the Kurdistan Region. Speaking at an event in al-Sulaymaniyah marking the PUK's 50th anniversary, Talabani said, 'I have spoken with al-Sudani about the salary payments for Kurdistan employees, and we are awaiting a solution to this issue.' The salary dispute has been a persistent source of tension between Erbil and Baghdad. The federal government's recent decision to halt salary disbursements to the Region's employees has fueled criticism in Kurdistan and raised concerns over the economic well-being of thousands of families. Talabani emphasized that the PUK continues to play a balancing role in Kurdistan and is viewed with respect both in Baghdad and across the Region. 'The Kurdish people have no issue with our Arab brothers, and the PUK is committed to resolving disputes with Baghdad,' he said. Addressing regional issues, Talabani highlighted the PUK's role in the peace process in Turkiye, saying, 'The PUK has an important role to play in this process and is capable of defending the rights of the Kurdish people.'
