NIA conducting searches at multiple locations in Delhi, 2 other cities days after arresting CRPF ASI for sharing classified info
Multiple teams of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are on Saturday conducting searches in Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata, days after arresting an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for allegedly sharing classified information with intelligence officers in Pakistan.
Earlier this week, the NIA said it had arrested CRPF ASI Moti Ram Jat from Delhi and was questioning him. The central agency alleged that he shared classified information with Pakistani agents, who posed as TV journalists, and was taking funds from them. He was posted with a CRPF battalion in J&K's Pahalgam and was transferred to Delhi five days before the April 22 terror attack on the tourist destination in which 26 civilians lost their lives.
On Saturday, a NIA spokesperson said, 'We are conducting searches in 15 locations and will share further information later.'
During questioning, Jat claimed that he was allegedly approached by a woman posing as a Chandigarh-based news reporter from a leading TV news channel, who requested that he share some information. 'After some messages and phone calls, including over video, Jat allegedly started sharing classified documents with her. After two-three months, a man, a Pakistan intelligence officer, started talking to him, posing as a journalist of the same news channel,' said a CRPF source.
'After one or two months, they started giving Rs 3,500 to him on the fourth day of every month, and also Rs 12,000 for crucial information. He received the money in his and his wife's accounts,' claimed the source.
He was remanded in the agency's custody until June 6 by the Special Court at Patiala House Courts. 'We have arrested Jat. He was actively involved in espionage activity and had been sharing classified information related to national security with PIOs (Pakistani intelligence officers) since 2023. We have also found that he was receiving funds from the PIOs through various conduits,' an NIA spokesperson said.
He has been dismissed from service. A CRPF spokesperson said Jat was found to have violated established norms and protocols during 'sustained monitoring' of his social media activity in coordination with central agencies.

According to the businessman, a third accomplice was waiting downstairs to aid their escape. Police said multiple teams had been deployed to investigate the case, identify the suspects, and recover the stolen amount. CCTV footage is currently being reviewed. Police suspect that the accused may have fled on a motorcycle after exiting the congested Katra Neel market following the robbery. An alleged CCTV footage has also surfaced showing three men wearing masks entering a building in a congested lane. The businessman told the media later that at the time of the incident, three people were present at the location, including two staff members. According to Jain, the entrance gate was locked when the attackers arrived. In an attempt to gain entry, the assailants fired two gunshots directly at the window, which resulted in the shattering of the glass panes. Following the gunfire, they kept kicking at the gate forcefully until they managed to break it, he added. "Once inside, the attackers began shouting loudly and aggressively, repeatedly yelling, 'Paise do, paise do! (Give us the money)'. The people present tried to convince them that no cash was available. However, the assailants proceeded to search a bag that was in the room. They discovered cash in the bag, and immediately took all the money they found," the victim added. He further said the entire act of robbery was carried out while the criminals held them at gunpoint, leaving everyone terrified and helpless.

Accused in 2023 train fire wanted to erase sins by killing non-believers in Kerala: NIA
KOCHI: Sharukh Saifi, the accused in the 2023 train arson case, committed the act believing that killing kafirs (non-believers) was the shortest route to absolution for his sins, the National Investigation Agency has said. The submission was filed in response to the bail plea moved by Saifi in NIA court last month citing delay in the trial's commencement. The court dismissed the plea. Saifi was arrested for pouring petrol on passengers on the Alappuzha-Kannur Express and torching the coach in April 2023 resulting in the death of three people. In his plea, Saifi claimed he was arrested on April 6, 2023, without being informed of the grounds for the arrest in writing. He argued that the autopsy report stated that people died after jumping from the train rather than from the fire. Since further investigation is ongoing, he noted there was no likelihood of the trial commencing in the near future. However, the NIA, as quoted in the court order, said the New Delhi native felt remorse for his lifestyle and wanted to become 'a true Muslim'. For this, he turned to online platforms to learn about violent jihad as propagated by radical Islamic preachers. 'He decided that the shortest way to absolution for his sins was through the killing of kafirs (non-believers), and decided to commit a crime of massacre and terror,' it said. 'Accused committed crime to attain salvation through violent jihad' The agency said Saifi chose to carry out his intended jihad in a place he would not be easily identified, and boarded a train to Kerala from Delhi on March 31, 2023. He arrived at Shoranur railway station on April 2, 2023, where he purchased petrol from a pump in a bottle and a lighter from a bunker shop in front of the railway station. Concealing the petrol and the lighter in his black backpack, Saifi boarded the train without a valid ticket, the NIA said.

Anna University rape convict gets 30-year jail, no remission
CHENNAI: The convict in the sensational Anna University sexual assault case, A Gnanasekaran (37), was sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without any remission of the jail term by the Chennai Mahila Court on Monday. Judge M Rajalakshmi said the perpetrator of such a grave offence cannot be shown any leniency. Gnanasekaran, a biryani stall owner, had raped the second-year engineering student on the Anna University campus on December 23, 2024, claiming himself to be a university staff member and had videographed the act. A total fine of Rs 90,000 was slapped on the convict, and the judge ordered the amount to be paid to the survivor. The court also ruled out the involvement of any other accused, widely attributed as 'sir.' The court announced the quantum of punishment on Monday four days after holding the accused guilty on all 11 counts of charges, including rape. 'The convict is sentenced to life imprisonment for a minimum period of 30 years without remission with a fine of Rs 25,000 under section 64 (1) (rape) of the BNS. In default, he has to undergo simple imprisonment for three months,' the judge said in her 207-page order. Pointing out that 37 other criminal cases were pending against Gnanasekaran, the judge said 'no leniency' could be shown to such an offender. The other charges he was punished with imprisonment are 329, 126 (2), 76, 127 (2), 75 (2), 76, 351 (3), 238 (b) of BNS and BNSS and Section 66 E of Information Technology Act for criminal trespass, wrongful restraint, using criminal force to disrobe a woman, and videographing a woman by violating her privacy.
