Accused in 2023 train fire wanted to erase sins by killing non-believers in Kerala: NIA
KOCHI: Sharukh Saifi, the accused in the 2023 train arson case, committed the act believing that killing kafirs (non-believers) was the shortest route to absolution for his sins, the National Investigation Agency has said. The submission was filed in response to the bail plea moved by Saifi in NIA court last month citing delay in the trial's commencement. The court dismissed the plea.
Saifi was arrested for pouring petrol on passengers on the Alappuzha-Kannur Express and torching the coach in April 2023 resulting in the death of three people. In his plea, Saifi claimed he was arrested on April 6, 2023, without being informed of the grounds for the arrest in writing. He argued that the autopsy report stated that people died after jumping from the train rather than from the fire. Since further investigation is ongoing, he noted there was no likelihood of the trial commencing in the near future.
However, the NIA, as quoted in the court order, said the New Delhi native felt remorse for his lifestyle and wanted to become 'a true Muslim'.
For this, he turned to online platforms to learn about violent jihad as propagated by radical Islamic preachers. 'He decided that the shortest way to absolution for his sins was through the killing of kafirs (non-believers), and decided to commit a crime of massacre and terror,' it said.

The agency said Saifi chose to carry out his intended jihad in a place he would not be easily identified, and boarded a train to Kerala from Delhi on March 31, 2023. He arrived at Shoranur railway station on April 2, 2023, where he purchased petrol from a pump in a bottle and a lighter from a bunker shop in front of the railway station. Concealing the petrol and the lighter in his black backpack, Saifi boarded the train without a valid ticket, the NIA said.

Railways suspends 2.5 crore user IDs suspected of fraudulent ticket booking
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has deactivated 2.5 crore suspect user IDs as part of a digital overhaul of its ticketing infrastructure, officials said on Wednesday (June 4, 2025). 'Through the deployment of anti-bot systems and integration with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) service provider, the Railways has curbed unauthorised automated bookings by unscrupulous agents and improved the access of the website to the genuine users,' a senior Railway official said. '131 complaints of the suspicious users have been lodged with the cyber crime cell in the last four months.' Bot traffic accounts for up to 50% of overall login attempts during this period, the official added. Revalidating suspect IDs IRCTC is also taking additional steps to revalidate suspicious user IDs through verification of mobile numbers and email IDs. In the last 15 days, around 20 lakh user IDs have been put into revalidation mode to confirm the authenticity of the users, officials said. On March 6, the IRCTC set its highest single-day ticket booking record of 16,17,404 tickets. Later, on May 22, the Railways recorded the highest number of bookings in one minute, with 31,814 tickets being booked on the upgraded platform. Users not authenticated via Aadhaar can book opening Advance Reservation Period (ARP), Tatkal, or Premium Tatkal tickets only three days after registration, while Aadhaar-verified users can book all tickets without delay. On May 7, IRCTC's Chairman and Managing Director wrote to the Railway Board seeking approval to implement the plan of allowing only Aadhaar/PAN-authenticated users to book opening Advance Reservation Period and Tatkal tickets during the first ten minutes. Boosting performance After upgrading the ticketing infrastructure, the Railways noticed that the average daily user logins increased from 69.08 lakh in the 2023–24 financial year to 82.57 lakh in 2024–25, registering a 19.5% rise. Average daily ticket bookings grew 11.85% in the same period, from 12.41 lakh in 2023-24 to 13.88 lakh in 2024-25. 'E-Ticketing now accounts for 86.38% of total reserved ticket bookings, which is a scale up of 3.7% from 82.68% in 2023-24,' the official said. The IRCTC has also taken measures to log out Individual users if they exceed 25 inquiries per session during Tatkal and ARP hours, officials said, adding that users can book only one ticket per login session, except for return/onward journeys. To book another ticket, users must log out and log in again. Also, overseas IP addresses are blocked at the network level during ARP and Tatkal booking hours, officials said. Except for defence agents, agent bookings have also been restricted between 8:00 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. which are the opening ARP timings for General Quota tickets, and also between 10:00 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. as well as from 11:00 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. during the opening for Tatkal Quota tickets. 'Only one Tatkal ticket per day/per train is allowed to agents,' officials said.

Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian national of Pakistani origin, is currently in judicial custody following his extradition from the United States. He is alleged to have conspired with David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen and key conspirator in the attacks, along with operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami, and other Pakistan-based individuals. Rana was brought to India after the US Supreme Court on April 4 dismissed his plea challenging the extradition. On Wednesday, Special Judge Chander Jit Singh took on record the reply submitted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and directed the jail authorities to file their response. The court also permitted Tihar Jail officials to respond based on the NIA's submission. Details of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks The 26/11 attacks were carried out by 10 armed men from Pakistan who entered Mumbai via the sea route on November 26, 2008. Every country condemned Pahalgam incident, stood with us in fight against terrorism: Rajeev Rai
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, a member of the all-party delegation that visited five countries following the Pahalgam terror attack, said that the outreach effort helped clear misconceptions about Pakistan and cross-border terrorism. He said the visit helped build international support against terrorism emanating from Pakistan. Speaking to ANI, Rai said, 'We visited five countries -- Russia, Slovenia, Greece, Latvia and Spain. In all five countries, they were either misinformed or had no information at all. We cleared their doubts through evidence and our arguments. I told them the history of Pakistan at several locations. I told them that we attained independence together -- one became the largest democracy of the world, and the other became the biggest terrorist nation of the world.' Rai pointed out that one common suggestion from all the countries was to engage in dialogue with Pakistan. However, he said the delegation responded by questioning the practicality of holding talks with a country where the military controls key decisions. Rai told ANI, 'We received one suggestion from everywhere - You should talk to Pakistan. We said that yes we have taken your advice, but let us know with whom we should talk... Pakistan has a puppet government. It has been the history of Pakistan that whichever civilian government thinks of behaving like a civilian government, is either jailed, thrown out of the country or is an Army which sells milk, chips, cement and deals in the real estate business. So, for them terrorism is also a business.' He accused Pakistan of misusing international funds, saying,'They seek help from Muslim countries by saying one thing and then seek funds from institutions and then fund terrorism. In such a situation, it is the voice of 140 crore people that Pakistan's terrorism will not be tolerated.' Rai also referred to past peace efforts made by India and the betrayals that followed. 'Whenever we tried to have talks, Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Lahore in a bus and when he was extending a hug, Musharraf was entering our country...,' the SP MP added. Rai expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the foreign outreach. 'After all examples, we are satisfied that wherever we went, every country eventually said that they condemn the Pahalgam incident and are with us in the fight against terrorism. We had a limited mandate. Now, it is up to the government how they go ahead on the ground we have set and what they do to isolate Pakistan,' HE said. SP MP Rajeev Rai was part of the delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi. It also included Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Prem Chand Gupta (Rashtriya Janata Dal), Ashok Kumar Mittal (Aam Aadmi Party), and Former envoys Manjeev S Puri.
