Accused in 2023 train fire wanted to erase sins by killing non-believers in Kerala: NIA
Saifi was arrested for pouring petrol on passengers on the Alappuzha-Kannur Express and torching the coach in April 2023 resulting in the death of three people. In his plea, Saifi claimed he was arrested on April 6, 2023, without being informed of the grounds for the arrest in writing. He argued that the autopsy report stated that people died after jumping from the train rather than from the fire. Since further investigation is ongoing, he noted there was no likelihood of the trial commencing in the near future.
However, the NIA, as quoted in the court order, said the New Delhi native felt remorse for his lifestyle and wanted to become 'a true Muslim'.
For this, he turned to online platforms to learn about violent jihad as propagated by radical Islamic preachers. 'He decided that the shortest way to absolution for his sins was through the killing of kafirs (non-believers), and decided to commit a crime of massacre and terror,' it said.

The agency said Saifi chose to carry out his intended jihad in a place he would not be easily identified, and boarded a train to Kerala from Delhi on March 31, 2023. He arrived at Shoranur railway station on April 2, 2023, where he purchased petrol from a pump in a bottle and a lighter from a bunker shop in front of the railway station. Concealing the petrol and the lighter in his black backpack, Saifi boarded the train without a valid ticket, the NIA said.

‘Was asked to arrest Mohan Bhagwat': Former ATS official claims after Malegaon verdict
A former police official, who was part of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) probe into the Malegaon blast case, has claimed that he was asked to arrest RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. The statement comes after a special NIA court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused in the Malegaon blast case, 17 years after a bomb exploded in the Muslim-dominated area of Maharashtra's Malegaon during the month of Ramadan in 2008. Reacting to the court's verdict, Mehiboob Mujawar said that the ruling undid the "fake things" done by the ATS. The probe in the Malegaon case was done by the ATS, and it was later taken over by the National Investigation Agency. "The verdict exposed the fake investigation done by a fake officer," Mujawar said, according to PTI. He said he was asked to "go and catch" Mohan Bhagwat. He, however, added that he did not follow the orders as they were "horrific" and "I knew the reality." "I cannot say what investigation the ATS did then and I was given some confidential orders regarding personalities like Ram Kalsangra, Sandip Dange, Dilip Patidar and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. All these orders were not such that one could follow them," he said. "It was beyond my capacity to apprehend a towering personality like Mohan Bhagwat. As I did not follow the orders, a false case was registered against me and it destroyed my career of 40 years," he added. Mujawar was part of the ATS team that began the probe of the blast in Malegaon on September 29, 2008, in which six people were killed and 101 others were injured. "There was no saffron terrorism. Everything was fake," he added. He also claimed that he had documentary proof to back his claims.

Delhi HC seeks NIA reply on MP Abdul Rashid's plea challenging terror case charges
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a response from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on a plea filed by Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, challenging the framing of charges against him in a 2017 terror funding case. A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur asked NIA to file its reply. The court also summoned the trial court records and scheduled the matter for hearing on October 6. Rashid, a former MLA and now an independent MP from Jammu and Kashmir, has been in Tihar Jail since 2019 after being arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His regular bail plea in the same case is also currently pending before the HC. Earlier, the court had only sought the NIA's response on the delay—spanning nearly 1,100 days—in filing the plea challenging the charges. However, in Thursday's hearing, Rashid's counsel also raised objections to a previous trial court order directing him to pay Rs 1.44 lakh per day for being escorted in custody to attend House's Monsoon Session. The bench indicated that both the plea should ideally be heard by the same division bench that had dealt with a similar petition during the Budget session. Consequently, the case was referred to a bench led by Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, subject to formal orders. In his latest bail application, Rashid has argued that he has already spent over five years in custody, and given the prolonged delay in trial, he is entitled to bail. He has denied all charges, maintaining he was never involved in any terror-related activity.
