Assam CM Himanta Alleges Malegaon Probe Was Congress' Conspiracy To Frame RSS Chief

News182 days ago
CM Himanta said that then home minister P. Chidambaram should be asked why he 'tried to frame the Hindu society with terror'.
A day after a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused in the Malegaon blast case, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday alleged that the investigation into the case was a conspiracy by the Congress to frame RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.
While addressing a press conference, Sarma called it a 'political witch hunt" by the then home minister P. Chidambaram. He also alleged that the entire plan was to defame the RSS and the Hindu religion.
'It is a known conspiracy that the Congress wanted to bring Bhagwat into the matter, but yesterday's court verdict, acquitting all seven accused, has exposed the party," he claimed.
He should be asked why he 'tried to frame the Hindu society with terror. People should also ask this question to him," added the Assam CM.

The Malegaon blast case dates back to September 2008, when a blast claimed six lives and injured 101 people after an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, Maharashtra.
The verdict in the case came on Thursday, 17 years after the incident took place. The court acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Prasad Purohit, noting that 'there was no reliable and cogent evidence" against them.
Special Judge AK Lahoti, assigned to hear cases of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said that no religion teaches violence and that terrorism has no religion, but the court cannot convict on mere perception.

Congress leaders who joined BJP ahead of Delhi elections get key posts

BJP MLAs Arvinder Singh Lovely and Raj Kumar Chauhan, who had switched to the party from Congress ahead of the Assembly elections in the Capital, have been appointed to key positions in the Delhi government. Lovely, the Gandhi Nagar MLA, has been named Chairman of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board, while Mangolpuri legislator Chauhan has been appointed the Chairman of the Village Development Board. The posts are equivalent to the rank of a Cabinet minister, underlined a government document. 'The Council of Ministers decided to designate the positions of Chairperson of Delhi Village Development Board (DVDB) and Chairperson of Trans Yamuna Area Development Board in the rank of Cabinet Minister in GNCT of Delhi,' stated a government document on Saturday. It added that other members of DVDB will be nominated by the government. 'The function of the Board will be to advise the government on issues connected with the infrastructural development works in rural and urban villages of Delhi,' it further said. Both Lovely and Chauhan had previously served as ministers in the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government. The latest appointments are seen as a reward for their role in strengthening the BJP's campaign in the Assembly election. 'This was a much-awaited reward. Both leaders bring administrative experience and will play key roles in developmental initiatives and in the party's civic poll strategy,' said a senior BJP functionary. Officials said the nominations received approval from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta a few days ago. Lovely, who also served as the pro-tem Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, quit the Congress last May, citing disagreement with the party's decision to ally with AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He had then joined the BJP for the second time and said: 'The last time I left Congress, it was in anger. This time, I did so with a cool head and after deep thought. Now, it's BJP or nothing—either we do politics here, or we don't do it at all.' Chauhan resigned from the Congress after being denied a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Contesting on a BJP ticket from the Mangolpuri (SC) seat earlier this year, Chauhan emerged victorious. Chauhan on Saturday said, 'The party has given us recognition equivalent to Cabinet rank and given the opportunity to work for the welfare of the people. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ji for this and under their leadership, will work on the vision of 'Viksit Delhi'.'

Rahul Gandhi will unseat Modi, not RSS: Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday said that it will not be the RSS or internal BJP politics that dislodges Narendra Modi from power—but Rahul Gandhi . Revanth asserted that the Congress, under Rahul's leadership, will limit the BJP to under 150 Lok Sabha seats in the next elections. "Even BJP MP Nishikant Dubey admitted they can't cross 150 seats without Modi. I want him to write in his diary—Modi will be unseated, not by age limits or RSS manoeuvering, but by Rahul and the people of India," Revanth said at the AICC Legal Conclave 2025 in Delhi, addressing a gathering of legal professionals in the presence of AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi. Taking aim at recent comments by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who hinted at a 75-year retirement threshold for political leaders, Revanth quipped, "I think Modi is not in favour of it. Why don't the rules that forced Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi into retirement apply to Modi?" But Sonia Gandhi declined the PM post in 2004. She backed Manmohan Singh for the PM post and even Pranab Mukherjee for the presidency. Rahul could've been PM or minister in 2009, but chose to work as a common party worker—fighting for the poor, OBCs, Dalits, and Adivasis. " Revanth warned that the BJP's true agenda is to dismantle the reservation system and undermine the Constitution. "Only Congress stands between the BJP and their plan to erase social justice. Rahul will not only remove Modi but also protect the Constitution and uphold 42% reservations for OBCs by conducting a national caste census," he claimed. Highlighting the Telangana model, he said the Congress govt had already conducted a caste survey in line with Rahul's commitment. "We've shown the way. This is the model for the rest of India," he said. Taking a swipe at critics who question Congress's legacy, Revanth reminded them, "Congress gave India independence, the Constitution, and reservations. What was the BJP doing then? Parties like BRS, BJD, RJD, and even BJP came after independence. The Congress was already fighting for freedom." In a resounding call to action, he urged the Congress cadre community to gear up for a decisive political and constitutional battle. "The time has come. The Constitution, which is under threat now, will also be protected," Revanth said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Malegaon Blast Case: Here's What Retired ATS Officer Mehboob Mujawar Claimed

Last Updated: Mujawar, who was one of the investigating officers in the case, claimed that senior ATS officials had explicitly instructed him to detain and arrest RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat In the detailed order of the special NIA court of Mumbai in the 2008 Malegaon blast case seen by CNN-News18, the testimony of former ATS officer Mehboob Mujawar has brought to light serious allegations of coercion and internal pressure within the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) during the initial stages of the investigation. According to the arguments presented by the counsel for accused number 10, ATS officer Mehboob Mujawar, who was one of the investigating officers in the case, claimed that senior ATS officials had explicitly instructed him to detain and arrest RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Mujawar, however, said he refused to comply with this 'illegal order", as he found no substantial role or involvement of Mohan Bhagwat in the alleged crime. As a consequence of his defiance, Mujawar alleged that he was subsequently implicated in a false case by the ATS, which was filed before a magistrate in Solapur. In support of these arguments, the defence counsel submitted certified copies of the said application and Mujawar's statement recorded under Section 313 of the CrPC in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Solapur. The court's order further delves into corroborating testimonies. During his cross-examination, prosecution witness PW-320, ACP Mohan Kulkarni, rejected the suggestion that Mehboob Mujawar had been dispatched to apprehend a senior functionary of the RSS. However, Kulkarni did admit that Mujawar was indeed sent to trace absconding accused AA-1 (Ramji Kalsangra) and AA-2 (Sandeep Dange). Kulkarni also denied a suggestion that Mujawar had publicly stated that the ATS had shot dead two persons, which might have been a reason for his exclusion from the charge sheet's witness list. Further adding to the picture, the cross-examination of prosecution witness PW-321, Dy. SP Anil Dubey, confirmed his awareness that Mehboob Mujawar was indeed a member of the ATS team and that his statement had been recorded by Wankhede. Considering the entirety of this evidence, the court's order explicitly noted that Mujawar was a member of the ATS team and had investigated the present case under the direction of his senior officers. It was also revealed that he had been questioned in connection with the deaths of Ramchandra Kalsangra (AA-1) and Sandeep Dange (AA-2) concerning his statements made before the media and news agencies. Significantly, the court pointed out that despite his involvement and the critical nature of his allegations, Mujawar's name was neither included in the witness list nor was he produced as a witness by either the prosecution or the defence during the trial. view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 05:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
