Thompson San Antonio
If you're looking for a hotel that's slightly off the beaten path—but still close to San Antonio's hottest attractions, consider the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk. This upscale Hyatt property is centrally located, just minutes away from the buzz of the Pearl District, home to some of the city's best restaurants (hello, Isidore and Brasserie Mon Chou Chou), the San Antonio Museum of Art for the art lovers and The Alamo for history buffs.
After a long day of city sightseeing, retreat back to one of the 162 guest rooms, including 33 luxury suites. The king rooms comfortably fit two and are a great option for couples or solo travelers who want more space, while the two-queen layout suits friends or families. While the pillows skew on the softer side, the bed itself is outfitted with luxe Sferra sheets and backed by a stylish buckle pillow-back headboard. Rich teal walls give the space a cozy, moody vibe, though floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample daylight. Designed by Mariana Valero, rooms feature abstract art, warm lighting and a thoughtful mix of wooden and industrial accents. Depending on the room you choose, you'll score either a neighborhood view or an expansive cityscape.
Didn't land a room with a skyline view? No problem—the hotel's 20th floor rooftop lounge offers a front-row seat to sweeping city vistas. At The Moon's Daughters, sip on inventive craft cocktails like the 'Wish You Were Here,' a mix of Mexican and Caribbean rum, passionfruit, lemongrass and lime, while snacking on shareables like truffle fries or poached pear with prosciutto.
When it's time to call it a night, fall back to the marble-tiled bathroom for a relaxing shower. The glass shower is lined with D.S. Durga toiletries for the ultimate spa experience. Just a heads up: The shower doesn't have the strongest water pressure or heat levels—not deal breakers, but worth noting.
Before we checked out, I wanted to try the Landrace, the hotel's signature restaurant by chef Steve McHugh. A celebration of the state's farmers and culinary heritage, Landrace whips out dishes like asparagus and pea soup, dry-aged tomahawk ribeye and wild-caught scallops. While I didn't get to try lunch or dinner, the breakfast service was solid. I recommend the croissant sandwich, served with barbecue bearnaise and crispy potatoes—a strong start to the day.
If you're looking for a hotel that blends luxury, comfort and close proximity to San Antonio's most iconic sites, without being right in the thick of it, the Thompson San Antonio delivers on those fronts.
Neighborhood
Set in the quieter North River Walk neighborhood, Thompson San Antonio is just steps away from the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and the river itself. There's also a nearby park within walking distance, ideal if you're traveling with your four-legged friends.

Major cruise company bans popular travel accessory causing confusion among passengers
A major cruise line has brought in a ban on a popular travel item and it's left some passengers confused. Cruise lines always have a list of banned items and it's common to see potentially hazardous items such as candles and heating appliances listed. But a freshly banned item on Carnival Cruise Line has surprised some regular cruisers. In a cabin letter given to passengers when they board the cruise, the line explains that 'handheld fans' are banned from a popular area of the ship. The letter states: 'For safety reasons, handheld fans are not permitted in the nightclub or any indoor dance floor.' As handheld fans are a popular travel accessory for hot destinations, many cruise guests were worried about the ban. In a video message, Carnival Cruise Line's brand ambassador John Heald, addressed the rules. The ambassador stressed that only handheld fans - paper fans 'made of cardboard' - are banned from the indoor dance floor. Guests will still be allowed to bring small electric handheld fans onboard Carnival Cruise Line ships. Heald said: 'Are fans allowed on board? Yes they are. We have not changed any rule regarding the fans that some of you like to have in your cabin. 'The electric fans - no bigger than 12 inches - they are allowed, of course. 'Please make sure they are in good working order. But you can, of course, continue to bring fans.' And although some guests were confused by the rules, Heald added that the majority of passengers had reacted positively to the letter.
