'It was in our hands to show a reaction and I think we've done it today,' Tillman said. 'We played a good game and it was nice to bounce back, have a good start to the tournament.'
Brenden Aaronson added his ninth goal in the 82nd and Haji Wright his fifth just 1 minute, 13 seconds later for the 16th-ranked Americans, who drew just 12,610 to PayPal Park.
'Malik is a talented player. It's obvious that everyone can see,' Pochettino said. 'October, November, when we met for the first time I think it was difficult to create this relationship that the player need[s] and the coach need[s] to trust and to trust each other. ... I think now after a few weeks together I really start to understand him and he starts to understand us. And he's very special, a very special talent and a very special kid.'

Luna, a 21-year-old who impressed Pochettino during his debut in January when he insisted he stay on the field with a broken nose, was playing not far from where he grew up and said he had gotten tickets for about 30 family and friends.

'It's especially cool to perform and do this in front of my family and all the people that have worked for me and helped me and suffered for me to be able to be in this position,' he said Saturday.
Luna ran onto Jones' back pass, dribbled down the left flank, and crossed to Tillman for the second goal, then shot from just inside the penalty area for the goal that glanced off Tillman for a 3-0 lead.
'His performance was really good. He showed his character,' Pochettino said.
The Americans have won their group in 16 of 17 Gold Cups, along with a second-place finish behind Panama in 2011, and improved their group stage record to 41 wins, one loss, and five draws. They play invited guest Saudi Arabia on Thursday at Austin, Texas, then close group play on June 22 against Haiti at Arlington, Texas.

Pochettino said he wanted to create competition for Turner, who didn't get into a Crystal Palace match after March 1. The coach said Turner told him he was disappointed with the decision but understood it and would compete to get playing time.

The Missouri native has not found the net since 2019 for the U.S. men's national team, however, and was left off Mauricio Pochettino's Gold Cup roster this summer.

Lalas slams Adams for 'immature and naive' reaction to USMNT critics
Alexi Lalas has hit out at U.S. men's national team midfielder Tyler Adams, who said this week that he didn't understand the volume of recent criticism from USMNT legends. According to Lalas, Adams is being "immature and naive" when he questions why former USMNT stars have been heavily critical of the current team and its star, Christian Pulisic. The USMNT entered this summer's Gold Cup on a four-game losing streak, the team's first in 18 years. Much of the focus was on the players who weren't on the Gold Cup roster, especially Pulisic, who opted out of the tournament in a highly controversial decision. Several former USMNT stars, perhaps most notably Landon Donovan, were highly critical of Pulisic's decision. Even with several stars absent, the USMNT managed to advance to the Gold Cup final where it fell 2-1 to Mexico. In an interview with The Athletic this week, Adams defended Pulisic while also questioning why so many former players felt the need to hammer the AC Milan star. "Everyone wants to throw his name in the gutter because it creates a big story, or it creates noise around [the team]," Adams said. "And that's how big of a player he is and how important of a player he is. But everyone in the team knows how important he is, what an amazing person he is. 'I can't say enough good things about him. He's one of the leaders of our team. The decision that he made was best for him, and it's going to help him in the long run.' The comments from Adams clearly rankled with Lalas, one of many former USMNT stars who have criticized the team and Pulisic in recent months. 'For a guy that I have a lot of time for when it comes to Tyler Adams, I thought that this was a strangely immature and naive, and weak kind of take," Lalas said on his "State of the Union" podcast. "Not that he's defending Christian Pulisic because we're all going to do that, but the way he seemed to think that there should be no criticism and we should all be kumbaya." In the interview, Adams also wondered aloud why so many former USMNT stars felt like it was open season on the current group of players. 'I can't even explain it,' the Bournemouth midfielder said. 'I'm not a social-media guy, so I don't follow anything, but when people bring up some of the things that are being said and some of the stories that are being created, it feels weird, because it feels like not long ago that every single one of those people were on board with, like, the direction that the federation was going and how well the players were doing. "And it feels like any setback, is [treated] like a disaster is happening." Lalas opined that Adams' take was "naive and aloof to the reality of the situation" with the USMNT, which is now less than a year from a World Cup on home soil. "Tyler if you can't explain it and you don't understand it — if I'm being charitable, then you're naive but if I'm not, then you're just being dumb," Lalas charged. "You understand exactly what is going on." The former USMNT defender added: "In the way that he's painted himself as blindsided by this — for someone that I have a lot of respect for like I said, and I think is very smart, and the way that he has talked over the years is sometimes beyond his years, maybe he showed a little bit of his youthful naïveté in this article here."

The American has missed 47 games since he signed for the club in the summer of 2023 and emphasized that last season's brief return to Premier League action provided crucial psychological reassurance about his recovery. 'This past season gave me the confidence that I needed to now say: 'You could take the next step. Let's take another step in development. Take a step in pushing yourself',' Adams told the Athletic. 'Now it's like: 'OK, I'm back to myself, I feel like myself'...I've had a nice break. I'm going to be able to get a nice preseason. And (then) it's go time.' WHAT TYLER ADAMS SAID The 26-year-old also touched upon his time with the Gold Cup and the period spent with the USMNT squad, as well as Mauricio Pochettino. He admitted that it was a great learning experience for him and that he was able to iron out what the Argentine wanted and how he expected the team to work. 'You hear about him in the way that he works, but until you spend a month with him, you don't really know. I've had the opportunity to do that now, so I feel like that will be really helpful in the long run, for not just myself, but a lot of the young guys that had the first opportunity as well.' THE BIGGER PICTURE Adams has struggled with injuries ever since his move to the Premier League, missing a large chunk of games for both Leeds United and Bournemouth. His time with the Cherries has seen him struggle with back and hamstring injuries before returning to fitness in the second half of the 2024-25 season. WHAT'S NEXT? Adams played a part in Bournemouth's preseason program under manager Andoni Iraola and is now focused on the club's first game of the season against Liverpool on Aug. 15.
