SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Emirati Doctor's Day, marked annually on March 11, celebrates the dedication of the UAE's doctors and acknowledges their efforts in safeguarding public health.The national day also highlights the competence of Emirati doctors in disease prevention, thereby enhancing the nation's healthcare system.According to Emirates Health Services, both public and private healthcare sectors mark the occasion with campaigns and interactive initiatives celebrating Emirati doctors, and their humanitarian role.Speaking to Aletihad on the occasion, Dr. Rashed Obaid Alsuwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Public Health Center, said: "Emirati doctors are building a legacy of innovation that is redefining healthcare and empowering the next generation of innovators and medical professionals to push boundaries and explore new frontiers for longer and healthier lives."Dr. Ali Al Jaberi, a Staff Physician at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Digestive Disease Institute, highlighted the transformation driven by innovation in the UAE's healthcare landscape. "Medicine is a lifelong commitment to healing, learning, and advancing care. As the UAE's healthcare landscape evolves rapidly, I am honoured to be part of this transformation. Every breakthrough we achieve and every patient we help brings us closer to a future where innovation and compassion go hand in hand. With this progress comes the responsibility of honouring our nation's legacy in healthcare while shaping its future," Dr. Al Jaberi said.Dr. Al Jaberi further added: "On Emirati Doctor's Day, I celebrate the dedication of my peers who are shaping a healthier tomorrow, and I take pride in contributing to this journey - empowering the next generation of Emirati doctors to push boundaries and redefine excellence."Dr. Abdulla Al Rahoomi, Consultant of Sports Medicine & Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Healthpoint Hospital, and the Founder and President of the Emirates Society of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, extended his gratitude to the UAE's leadership for providing the resources, hospitals and equipment that enable Emirati doctors to perform their roles proficiently. "As Emirati doctors, we take great pride in our achievements, and the growing number of specialists across various fields, including sports medicine, is a testament to that," he said."Today, we have the infrastructure, teams, and technology to offer treatments that were once unavailable in the UAE. Traditionally, treating aneurysms requires invasive open surgery. However, recent advancements in minimally invasive procedures have transformed how these conditions are managed, offering safer and more effective options for patients. Innovative Technique The procedure begins with a minimally invasive technique where a catheter is inserted through the patient's blood vessels, typically from the groin or arm, to reach the aneurysm in the brain. Using advanced 3D imaging and angiograms, physicians can visualise and assess the aneurysm with precision. Once positioned, the unique mesh device is deployed into the aneurysm and fills it, preventing blood from entering, reducing the risk of rupture and associated complications like subarachnoid haemorrhage. This innovative technique is particularly useful for aneurysms with wide necks, which are typically challenging to treat using traditional methods. The device stays in place permanently, eliminating the need for further invasive surgery while providing long-term protection against procedure itself can take between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the complexity of the aneurysm. Following the treatment, patients undergo follow-up imaging at regular intervals, typically at 3 and 6 months, to ensure the device is effectively treating the aneurysm. Abu Dhabi launches newborn genetic testing programme
Abu Dhabi has rolled out a newborn genetic screening programme for Emirati nationals across several hospitals, to enable early detection and diagnosis of genetic conditions. The Newborn Genetic Screening Programme offers whole genome sequencing to screen more than 815 treatable childhood genetic conditions, including metabolic disorders, immunodeficiencies, hematologic conditions, and rare diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy. Using genomics and artificial intelligence (AI), the first phase of the programme has been implemented as a voluntary option at Kanad Hospital and Danat Al Emarat Hospital, in partnership with M42. The initiative is planned to be expanded across all maternity hospitals to screen UAE nationals and children of Emirati mothers born in the emirate. By collecting and testing cord blood samples at birth, with parental consent, healthcare providers can identify conditions that may not be apparent at birth but could significantly affect a child's health if treatment is delayed. Results are reported within 21 days, and parents will receive genetic counselling and be referred to multidisciplinary specialists if any actionable findings are identified. 'Through early detection, personalised care and strategic foresight, we are building a future of healthier generations and reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a global leader in proactive, precision healthcare," said Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi. To support the rollout of the programme, DoH conducted a workshop to review the gene panel and patient journey with specialists from stakeholders across Abu Dhabi. DoH also collaborated with M42 to train 16 paediatricians and neonatologists across three maternity hospitals, Corniche Hospital, Danat Al Emarat and Kanad Hospital, on genetic counselling practices and the importance of newborn genetic screening. These initiatives aim to reduce the prevalence of genetic diseases, inform reproductive choices, facilitate access to early intervention, and empower families with vital health information, fostering a future where personalised, preventative healthcare is the standard. The Newborn Genetic Screening Programme is one of several initiatives that have been made possible by the Emirati Genome Programme, such as the Premarital Screening Programme, harnessing the power of genomics and latest technologies to promote informed decisions.
