19 May 2025, 01:27 GMT+10
New Delhi [India], May 19 (ANI): The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has reached a significant milestone as its expedition team successfully scaled Mount Everest (8,848m) on Sunday.
According to a release from the Ministry of Defence, the team comprised 10 NCC cadets (five boys and five girls), four Officers, two Junior Commissioned Officers, one Girl Cadet Instructor, and 10 Non-Commissioned Officers.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the expedition from New Delhi on April 3, 2025.
The cadets selected were novices from across the country. They underwent a strict selection and training process. As part of their preparation, they conducted a pre-Everest Expedition at Mt Abi Gamin. The final team of 15 cadets was then selected to undergo winter and technical training at the Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen Base Camp. After months of training, ten cadets were selected for the Mount Everest Expedition.
The team, comprising the youngest climbers with an average age of 19 years, became the centre of attraction and were noted for their fitness and discipline during acclimatisation training at various stages of the ascent. Sherpas of Nepal praised the NCC team for their physical readiness and morale.
Despite facing challenging weather and terrain, the cadets successfully unfurled the Tricolour and the NCC Flag atop the world's highest peak, representing national pride and youth power.
This is the third ascent of Mt Everest by the NCC, following previous expeditions in 2013 and 2016. (ANI)

Delhi: 2 of 6 tiger cubs born last week in zoo die; 4 under close watch
ANI file photo N EW DELHI: Two Bengal tiger cubs have died at the Delhi zoo in the past three days, officials said on Monday, just a week after the birth of six cubs, the largest litter in two decades. The cubs were born to a seven-year-old tigress, Aditi, on August 4. This was her first litter since arriving from the Gorewada rescue centre in Nagpur. The smallest cub in the litter died inside the enclosure on the morning of August 8. Another, too weak to feed, was moved to the zoo hospital on August 9, but died the following night despite treatment. Zoo director Sanjeet Kumar said Aditi is feeding and caring for the remaining four cubs, who are under 24-hour CCTV and manual monitoring. 'Supplements are being given to the mother to support milk production. The remaining cubs are active and feeding well,' Kumar said as quoted by PTI. Before this litter, the zoo had six white tigers and seven Royal Bengal tigers. In 2023, tigress Siddhi from Gorewada gave birth to five cubs, the first Royal Bengal tiger birth at the zoo in nearly 18 years, but only two survived. The last litter of six was in 2005, when two survived. The most recent white tiger birth was in 2022, when tigress Sita delivered three cubs, of which two survived. Officials say survival rates in large litters are often low. The Delhi Zoo, which has housed tigers since its opening in 1959, is recognised under the Central Zoo Authority's conservation breeding programme as a centre for tiger conservation and breeding.

One killed, dozens injured as 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits western Turkey
The quake was felt across several cities in the west of the country, including Istanbul and the tourist hotspot of Izmir. read more A 6.1-magnitude quake struck Sindirgi in western Turkey on Sunday, the Turkish disaster management agency (AFAD) said, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more. The quake was felt across several cities in the west of the country, including Istanbul and the tourist hotspot of Izmir. 'An 81-year-old person died soon after having been rescued from under the rubble,' Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told journalists at Sindirgi, the epicentre of the quake. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Another 29 people had been injured, but not seriously, he added. The quake collapsed 16 buildings in Sindirgi and its surroundings, of which four were inhabited, including a three-storey building in the city centre, he said. Several people were pulled alive from the rubble of the three-storey building, where six people were living. The person who died had also been buried under the rubble there before being freed. Earlier, Mayor Serkan Sak had told Turkish private channel NTV: 'Four were rescued from the rubble.' Efforts to extract two others were ongoing, he added. Some 319 first responders were deployed to the affected zone, AFAD said. The quake hit at 7:53 pm (1653 GMT), with some 20 aftershocks ranging from 3.5 to 4.6 magnitude, according to AFAD.
