Los Angeles faces second night of curfew as Trump expands crackdown: ‘democracy under assault'

The Los Angeles Police Department moved swiftly on Wednesday night to quell disorder stemming from anti-deportation protests, charging crowds on horses and firing 'less lethal' munitions to clear protesters. After the initial burst of activity, the downtown area – under a second night of curfew imposed by Mayor Karen Bass – was calmer, with a heavy police presence designed to prevent a repeat of the unrest that has led to 600 arrests since the weekend and acts of vandalism and looting. Tensions remain high though as the city is gripped by the divide between local and federal powers. California Governor Gavin Newsom used a national address to slam President Donald Trump for activating 700 active-duty Marines and authorising the deployment of up to 4,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles. 'Democracy is under assault right before our eyes,' Newsom said. 'This moment we have feared has arrived.' Protests over raids continued to spread across the US, including Spokane, Washington, where Mayor Lisa Brown issued a curfew on Wednesday night and police made 30 arrests, according to media reports. Las Vegas police declared an 'unlawful assembly' and fired tear gas at protesters. Demonstrations have also popped up in cities including New York, Chicago and Milwaukee, with protesters clashing with police and local officials. The National Guard in Los Angeles will support immigration arrests made by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on city streets. On Wednesday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi said the administration is invoking the Hobbs Act to allow federal prosecutors to take over criminal cases that would typically be handled by California authorities.

How LA protests might force China to rethink its approach to US ties

The unrest in Los Angeles has revealed US domestic tensions that could momentarily divert Donald Trump's attention from his China policies, potentially requiring a recalibration of Beijing's approach towards Washington, according to Chinese analysts. One international relations expert urged Beijing to adopt a more pragmatic approach towards US ties and shift its focus to adapt to the conservative turn in American politics. After days of demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles over citywide US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, thousands of people across the US joined protests and rallies opposing the sweeping enforcement actions targeting unauthorised immigrants, with hundreds of protesters arrested. Parts of downtown Los Angeles were under curfew for a second night on Wednesday. A federal judge will hold a hearing on Thursday over California's request to block the Trump administration from deploying troops in Los Angeles to quell the unrest – an action California governor Gavin Newsom alleged was 'illegal' and violated state sovereignty. 04:36 Trump vows to 'liberate' Los Angeles as protests spread to other major US cities Trump vows to 'liberate' Los Angeles as protests spread to other major US cities Pang Zhongying, an international affairs expert at Sichuan University, said the domestic turmoil in the US was likely to divert the White House's attention. And with midterm elections approaching next year, this diversion might offer a window for eased tensions or warmer ties between China and the US, he added.

China's PLA Daily slams US Golden Dome missile defence plan, warns of space arms race

China's military newspaper has condemned America's planned ' Golden Dome ' space-based missile defence system, warning that it may threaten global strategic stability and trigger an arms race in space. 'The development of the Golden Dome system and the US Space Force's rapid expansion have further militarised outer space,' a commentary in the PLA Daily warned on Thursday, adding that such moves could potentially intensify great power rivalry and challenge international arms control norms. The official People's Liberation Army publication also highlighted Washington's recent steps to speed up the US$175 billion Golden Dome programme, including the setting up of a 'technical integrated planning team' led by General Michael Guetlein. Guetlein, vice-chief of space operations at the US Space Force, was appointed direct programme manager for the Golden Dome missile defence project last month. 01:26 Trump's Golden Dome shows US 'obsessed with absolute security', China says Trump's Golden Dome shows US 'obsessed with absolute security', China says The paper also highlighted critical programmes under the US Space Development Agency (SDA) and Missile Defence Agency (MDA).
