Govt Prioritising Lower Denomination Notes And Digital Transactions: Sitharaman

India.com2 days ago

New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that the priority of the government is to "make sure" that currency in circulation will be in "lower denominations" and spreading more awareness for "doing digital transfers."
Answering a question on the future of Rs 500 currency, Sitharaman said, "We are making every effort to make sure that currency will be in the lower denominations, used much more than the higher, as the Rs 2000 is almost completely out of circulation, except for possibly 0.02, which is still lying outside. Others have given it to the banks."
"We need to have more digital awareness built so that people see a benefit in doing digital transfers," the Union Finance Minister said at the 'National Commemorative Seminar on 60 Years of Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya Integral Humanism Lectures' in the national capital.
In recent years, India has witnessed an unparalleled rise in digital transactions, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a cashless society. At the forefront of India's digital payment revolution is UPI with a record hit of 16.73 billion transactions in December 2024.
In addition to this, Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) and FASTag have emerged as pivotal players, making financial transactions faster, more accessible, and secure. As of recent data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has set a new record by processing over 16.73 billion transactions, with a staggering transaction value of Rs 23.25 lakh crore. This is a notable jump from Rs 21.55 lakh crore in November.
In 2024, UPI processed around 172 billion transactions, marking a 46 per cent increase from 117.64 billion in 2023. This rise underscores a broader cultural shift toward financial inclusivity, with UPI being a central pillar.

"Time for Party to prepare": BJP chief JP Nadda charts roadmap in Himachal ahead of Panchayat polls

Solan (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda on Monday chaired a key core group meeting of the party in Himachal Pradesh's Solan, and instructed the state unit to start preparing for the upcoming Panchayat elections. During his visit, Nadda also participated in a Tiranga Yatra, where he congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for Operation Sindoor. In his address during the core group meeting, Nadda instructed the state BJP to launch a series of outreach programmes over the next two and a half months from June 5 to August 15 coinciding with the 11th anniversary of the Modi government. These events, he emphasised, should highlight the achievements of the Centre and energise party cadres across Himachal Pradesh. The State spokesperson and BJP MLA Randheer Sharma elaborated on the upcoming programme, saying, 'from Sankalp to Siddhi, We'll Take 11 Years of Modi's Work to the people.' 'The main agenda of today's core group meeting was to prepare for the campaigns around the 11-year milestone of the Modi government, which has undoubtedly been historic. Under the slogan 'Sankalp se Siddhi Tak', we will reach out to the public with the government's achievements,' he added. Sharma also outlined specific events being planned. 'On June 5, World Environment Day, we will begin with environment-related events. On June 21, we will observe International Yoga Day with programmes at the mandal level. On June 25, we will observe a 'Black Day' to mark the anniversary of the Emergency. Each of these events will be well-planned, and this detailed calendar will serve as a launchpad for our party's strategy leading into upcoming Panchayati Raj and Assembly elections,' he said. Meanwhile, former Himachal CM Jai Ram Thakur expressed his happiness over Nadda attending the Tiranga Yatra despite having a busy schedule. 'It was a matter of joy that despite attending a family function in Himachal, Nadda ji participated in both the Tiranga Yatra and the core group meeting. His presence has deeply motivated the party workers,' he added. Thakur further emphasised the significance of the guidance provided by the BJP national president, saying, 'he told us it's time to prepare, as half of the state government's term is already over. Naturally, as the Opposition, it's our responsibility to raise public issues both inside and outside the Assembly and face the upcoming challenges from the ruling side effectively. (ANI)
