790 snakebite incidents reported in Mys dist in 2024
Mysuru: Compared to 2023, the number of snakebite incidents have more than doubled in most of Mysuru region in 2024. The data presented by health and family welfare department revealed that Mysuru district recorded four deaths due to snakebites in 2024. According to experts, most of these cases are reported from rural areas. According to the data presented by state health and family welfare minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao, to a question raised by MLC S Ravi in the ongoing legislative council session, as many as 790 snakebite cases were reported in Mysuru district in 2024. There were 323 cases in 2023 and 189 in 2022. A snake rescuer and former corporator, Balasubramanyam, popularly known as Snake Shyam, said most of the snakebites related calls and snake rescue are by farmers and farm labourers. "In urban areas, snakebite incidents are rare. But it is the highest in rural areas, especially in farms, paddy, and sugar cane fields," he explained. "Awareness about snakebites can prevent these incidents," he said. According to Bagadalapura Nagendra, president of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha and Hasiru Sene, most of the victims are either farmers or farm labourers. Vax, sterilisation figures show UP keeping stray dog menace in check
1 2 Lucknow: In 2023-24 and 2024-25, animal birth control programme succeeded in sterilising and vaccinating 2,84,641 stray dogs against rabies. Moreover, the state established 17 permanent ABC centres, with two additional centres approved for Lucknow and Ghaziabad, on a comprehensive budget of Rs 34 crore. Additionally, the department issued 5,333 pet dog licences this year, promoting responsible pet ownership and community safety. Taking note of Supreme Court's latest directives issued to local bodies to manage dog bite cases and keep the local population safe, urban development department is taking proactive steps to enhance urban safety and animal welfare through its ABC and anti-rabies vaccination programmes, implemented across all 17 municipal corporations. Additionally, the department issued 5,333 pet dog licences this year, promoting responsible pet ownership and community safety. The ABC programme sterilised and vaccinated 1,25,893 dogs in 2023-24 and 1,19,197 in 2024-25. From Apr 1 to July 15, further progress was made. The pet licensing initiative ensured pet dogs were vaccinated and registered, reducing risk associated with unmonitored animals. Principal secretary of urban development department, Amrit Abhijat, highlighted the department's efforts, stating, "We are working diligently with urban local bodies to promote safer communities and humane animal management. The establishment of modern management centres and the issuance of 5,333 pet dog licences this year reflect our commitment to comprehensive urban solutions." To prevent dog bites, the department is raising public awareness, advising residents to avoid feeding stray dogs randomly at different locations, supervise children near animals, regulate their behaviour with night visitors and delivery persons visiting localities late at night, while also seeking immediate medical care in case of bites. Citizens are urged to report aggressive or unwell dogs to local authorities or to the dedicated helpline (1533) for prompt action. Moreover, the staff deputed in local bodies have been asked to deal promptly with complaints and grievances related to stray dogs and take action against those encouraging violent behaviour of dogs after making inquiries with locals and verifying the details through survey and investigation. SJM/Norms relaxed, residents of registered homes for the mentally ill to be enrolled under CMCHIS
All inmates of registered homes for the mentally ill will be enrolled under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) without requiring the mandated ration card and income certificate. Issuing an order to this effect, the State government permitted the Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) to enrol all inmates in registered homes under CMCHIS without the mandated ration card and income certificate, subject to satisfying the criteria prescribed in Government Order 16 dated January 8, 2022 [on continuation of implementing CMCHIS with effect from January 11, 2022 to January 10, 2027 through United India Insurance Company at a premium of Rs. 849 per family per annum]. The government sanctioned Rs. 51,05,896 for the enrollment of 5,944 inmates in 108 homes under the Welfare of the Differently Abled Persons Department without the need for the two documents. It was at the sixth monitoring committee meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary in early 2024 that it was decided to issue orders to approve issuance of CMCHIS cards to inmates residing at homes for the mentally ill in the absence of other individual identity cards such as ration card, income certificate that are mandated as eligibility criteria for enrolment under the scheme. Listing out the mental health establishments in the State, the Health department noted that there are a total of 54 government-run and an equal number of NGO-run homes for mentally ill persons in the State. There are six halfway homes - one with the Institute of Mental Health and five with the Welfare of the Differently Abled Persons Department. There are eight government-run and eight NGO-run Emergency Care and Recovery Centres in the State. Officials said that providing CMCHIS coverage for persons with mental illness residing at mental health establishments would help them get medical or surgical treatment that they required in both government hospitals and empanelled private hospitals. 'There may be inmates who suffer from cardiac ailments requiring bypass surgery or stenting, or from fractures or hernias or medical management for any illness,' an official said, adding that one of the highlights measures taken was to do away with the need for the mandated documents to enrol under CMCHIS. Doctors said that most of the residents do not have social support, and relaxation of these norms would facilitate access to immediate medical care especially in emergencies. It may be recalled that in mid-2022 a total of 520 residents of IMH were brought under CMCHIS after the State government relaxed these norms.
