Padma Shri-winning Sikh scholar Rattan Singh Jaggi passes away at 98, legacy to live on

Patiala: The world of Punjabi and Hindi literature mourned the loss of one of its brightest stars on Thursday, as Padma Shri awardee Rattan Singh Jaggi passed away at the age of 98.
Jaggi was a scholar, critic, and author whose vast body of work touched the fields of Gurmat, Sikh scripture, and the Bhakti movement.
Jaggi, who was unwell for some time, breathed his last in Patiala, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy of over 150 published works. He is survived by wife Dr Gursharan Kaur Jaggi, who is a former principal of Govt College for Women in Patiala, and son Malwinder Singh Jaggi, a retired IAS officer.
Jaggi devoted over six decades to the study of medieval literature and Sikh theology. He earned his PhD from Panjab University in 1962 for his research on Dasam Granth.
He later received a DLitt from Magadh University in 1973 for his work on Guru Nanak's life and philosophy. Fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Persian and Urdu, Jaggi's literary contributions spanned encyclopaedias, critical commentaries, translations, and reference works.
Jaggi's profound understanding of Sikh scriptures led to his magnum opus — an eight-volume Punjabi commentary on the Guru Granth Sahib, titled Bhav Prabodhini Tika, and a five-volume Hindi version of the same.
He enriched Sikh scholarship through projects like Sikh Panth Vishavkosh (encyclopaedia of Sikhism) and Arthbodh Sri Guru Granth Sahib, published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
Tulsi Ramayan, his Punjabi translation of Ram Charit Manas, earned him a National Award from the Sahitya Akademi.
Jaggi was the recipient of numerous national and state-level accolades. In 2023, the govt of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contribution to literature and education.
He was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, Punjabi Sahit Shiromani Puraskar, and multiple recognitions from the govts of Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Punjabi University, Patiala, and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, conferred DLitt degrees upon him, while Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, awarded him a Fellowship.
His notable editorial projects included Punjabi Sahit Sandarbh Kosh, Punjabi Sahit da Sarot Moolak Itihas, and Guru Granth Vishavkosh, all published by Punjabi University. His recent contributions included Guru Nanak Bani: Paath ate Vyakhya, published during the 550th Prakash Purb celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. MSID:: 121340837 413 |

Over 20k attend Mega DSC-2025 exam on Day 1
VIJAYAWADA: A total of 14,281 candidates (88.69% of the 16,102 registered aspirants) appeared in the morning session of the Mega DSC 2025 held across 91 centres on Friday. A total of 7,611 candidates (86.7% of the total registered) attended the examination, conducted at 51 centres in the afternoon session. The computer-based examination process to fill 16,347 teacher posts commenced smoothly and witnessed an encouraging response from aspiring teachers. The exams will continue till June 30. Subjects covered in the morning session included TGT (Non-Language) Mathematics (English Medium), TGT-Hindi-VH, TGT-Physical Science-HH, TGT-Physical Science-VH, and TGT (Language) Telugu-HH. The afternoon session was conducted for TGT (NL) Mathematics (English Medium) and TGT Mathematics-HH papers. Kadapa records highest DSC attendance HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, in a message on X, described the moment as a proud one and conveyed his best wishes to the candidates, calling them the 'Teachers of tomorrow.' Mega DSC Convenor MV Krishna Reddy said Kadapa district reported the highest attendance with 91.1% in the morning and 92% in the afternoon session. Authorities ensured elaborate arrangements at all examination centres. Candidates were allowed to enter exam centres an hour before the test began, and entry was strictly closed post 9:00 am. District Collectors, DEOs, and state-level observers monitored the entire process through command control rooms set up at district headquarters and the state level. Officials confirmed that the first day of the examination concluded peacefully and without incident.

2,231 children get seats in Gujarat schools in third round of RTE admissions
As many as 2,231 more children were offered seats in unaided private primary schools across Gujarat in the third round of the RTE admission process, held on Friday. The Right to Education Act 2009 reserves 25 per cent seats in private schools for students from weaker groups. Students clearing this round for admissions in Class 1 will have to appear in person at their respective schools by June 13 and submit necessary documents to get their admissions confirmed. After the third round of allotment, 6,946 of the total seats available under the RTE admission process are vacant that include 624 in Gujarati-medium schools, 4,238 in English, 1,919 in Hindi and 165 in others. A total of 94,798 seats were available under the RTE process in different mediums in a total of 9,814 unaided primary schools in the state for the academic year 2025-26. Of these, a total of 93,270 students had been allotted seats in the first and second rounds, with 85,744 of them taking admission in the respective schools. For the 9,157 vacant seats after the completion of the second round, 82,448 applicants were denied admission. They, however, were allowed to re-select schools from June 2 to 4. During this period, while 31,391 applicants re-selected schools, 51,057 went for the previously selected schools, according to details from the office of the Director of Primary Education, Gandhinagar.
