Plans to replace Everest Sherpas with drones branded ‘idiotic'

Yahoo18-03-2025

Sherpas on Mount Everest are fearing for their jobs after plans were announced to use Chinese drones to ferry equipment up and down the world's tallest mountain.
Perilous tasks that used to take hours by foot will now be completed in a matter of minutes, as drones capable of carrying up to 15kg look set to transform the climbing experience.
The unmanned aircraft will be used to carry oxygen cylinders up the mountain, retrieve ladders from climbing routes, and remove waste left behind by mountaineers. They will also be used to deliver hot food. It is hoped that they will take away some of the risk faced by Sherpas, by cutting out otherwise menial tasks.
Politicians, trade unions and Sherpas, however, have hit out at the 'idiotic' programme, which they say will take work away from the climbing support teams.
'The introduction of drones could take away the livelihoods of thousands of Sherpas,' Ajay Kumar Rai, general secretary of the Nepal Trade Union Congress, told The Telegraph. 'For six months, they risk their lives on Everest, and for the rest of the year, they have no work. If drones start replacing them, what will they do?'
Mr Rai said climate change has already hit the Sherpas hard, with avalanches and landslides driving away climbers and reducing their income. Typically, they earn around £4,000 a season.
'Now, technology threatens to push them further to the edge. We are urging the Nepalese government to either stop deploying drones or ensure these workers are given alternative jobs.
'These men have spent their lives navigating Everest's treacherous terrain, carrying supplies, and guiding climbers. Their livelihoods cannot just be discarded,' he added. 'We will fight to make sure they are not left behind.'
Rajendra Bajgain, a Nepalese MP told The Telegraph: 'If this idiotic initiative is going ahead, the government should provide food and health facilities to the Sherpas from the royalties collected from climbers.'
Different drones have been tested over the past year, and this season's pilot programme aims to convince expedition operators to invest in the technology.
A trial of the DJI Flycart 30 – a heavy-lift drone costing $70,000 – saw it transport up to 225kg of equipment per hour between Base Camp and Camp I, a task that would otherwise require 14 people walking for six hours.
Each year, around 600 people attempt to climb the 29,029 ft mountain, spending weeks in the area acclimatising. From September, those seeking to summit the world's tallest mountain during peak season will have to pay $15,000 (£12,180).
Nepalese officials said drones could reduce the deadly burden on Sherpas, who for decades have risked their lives carrying heavy loads for foreign climbers through Everest's Khumbu Icefall.
For decades, Sherpas have shouldered the responsibility of hauling oxygen cylinders, gas canisters, tents, food and ropes across the treacherous icefall, often making over 30 trips per season through one of the world's most dangerous glacier fields.
The Khumbu Icefall, a constantly shifting river of ice, is notorious for sudden avalanches and collapsing seracs – towering ice columns that can crush climbers. Even experienced Sherpas hesitate to set off when the sun rises, knowing that warming temperatures increase the risk of ice breaking away. Most crossings take place at night or in the early morning, when conditions are more stable.
'Using drones could help us avoid the life-threatening dangers of the icefall,' a Nepalese official said.
Adriana Brownlee, the youngest woman to summit all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks and only second Briton to do so, said: 'The drones could potentially be a good addition to the Everest climbing season as it will facilitate with bringing rubbish down and aiding the Sherpas who carry extreme amounts of equipment up and down the mountain.'
Brownlee, however, warned that drones could introduce new dangers. 'It could also be seen as dangerous though for climbers as they get distracted from the noise or sight of drones. It will be interesting to see how they work this season,' she said.
On April 18, 2014, an avalanche triggered by a falling serac killed 16 Sherpas, forcing the cancellation of that year's expeditions. In 2023, three Sherpas preparing the climbing route were buried under the collapsing ice – their bodies have never been recovered.
Since 1953, nearly 50 climbers and Sherpas have lost their lives in the Khumbu Icefall, according to records from the Himalayan Database and the Nepalese government.

Rept Battero to supply batteries for Indonesian electric buses

Chinese battery manufacturer Rept Battero Energy Company has signed a supply agreement with PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas, the commercial vehicle manufacturing unit of Indonesia's Bakrie & Brothers Group, for up to 3,000 truck and bus battery packs by the end of 2025. Rept Battero's local subsidiary, PT Rept Battero Indonesia, will assemble the lithium-ion battery packs locally to help meet Indonesia's localization rate requirements (TKDN) and help advance zero-emission transportation in the country. The agreement was signed in VKTR's truck and bus plant in Magelang, Central Java, in the presence of Indonesia's Minister of Land Transport and Transportation of Indonesia, and the heads of General Administration of Customs, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, and local government officials. The VKTR plant is focused exclusively on the production of battery-powered commercial vehicles and is equipped with full-process manufacturing capabilities, including chassis assembly, battery assembly, body welding, painting, final assembly, and vehicle testing. The two companies also plan to collaborate on helping to develop Indonesia's battery supply chain, including nickel smelting and production of other battery materials. Great News for Nio's Massive Battery-Swapping Ambitions

Nio offers battery swaps at thousands of locations across China. CATL is working with automakers to standardize battery-swap technology. Rumors are swirling that CATL could purchase some of Nio's battery-swapping unit. 10 stocks we like better than Nio › Nio (NYSE: NIO) has always been a fascinating stock to follow with its many ups and downs. The Chinese automaker is poised for strong growth on the back of launching two entirely new brands, Onvo and Firefly. Nio is also intriguing for its decision to push battery-swap technology, which it offers at thousands of locations. The idea is foreign to many U.S. investors, but it's far more popular in China. Nio recently received some good news regarding its battery-swap ambitions -- here's what you need to know. A battery swap is simply when someone with an appropriate vehicle drives a depleted battery into a swap station, and replaces it with a fully charged battery. Nio's newest vehicles can do this in roughly two-and-a-half minutes. Now, let's get to the good news. Another Chinese battery maker, CATL, is working with a group of Chinese automakers on a battery swapping technology that takes just over 90 seconds. According to Car News China, 1,000 electric vehicle (EV) sedans with CATL's "Choco-SEB" swappable battery have been delivered to a taxi company -- a near-perfect application for battery swaps that would limit downtime for taxi drivers. Wait a second, isn't more battery-swap competition a bad thing for Nio? Absolutely not. Nio's competition isn't truly other battery-swapping tech -- its competition is fast-charging stations. Nio needs to create an ecosystem of vehicles that use its setup to have a thriving userbase for its swapping stations, and CATL can help with this aim. CATL is working to bring together a group of automakers to develop a standardized system for battery swaps that could vastly increase the number of swapping vehicles on the road. Furthermore, rumors are floating around that CATL is looking to purchase a controlling stake in Nio Power's battery swapping unit, which, depending on the potential agreement, could vastly increase the scale of battery-swapping technology. CATL is already working on building out a network of its stations. It's also likely that Nio's more affordable and higher-volume brand, Firefly, could bring in a fleet of new vehicles to match this new standard. This all sounds great, so where's the drawback? The catch, if you want to call it that, is that competition with fast-charging stations is increasing as companies find ways to speed up the process. In fact, automakers are already hard at work to beat BYD's five-minute EV fast-charging benchmark. It's certainly a risky ambition to build out a capital-intensive network of battery-swap stations that may only save a few minutes compared to fast-chargers. Another drawback is that the idea of a standardized battery development (so many platforms of vehicles can use the same battery-swap technology) means that these batteries and designs could be slower to evolve at a time when individual companies are trying to race ahead with breakthroughs. CATL, a juggernaut battery producer, coming on board to push battery-swapping networks with multiple automakers is a huge deal for Nio, and that's before considering the doors it could open as the two companies grow more ties. Furthermore, if CATL does purchase a controlling stake in Nio Power's battery-swap business, it could give a young cash-burning company some extra capital. No matter how you spin it, this development is great news for Nio's massive battery-swap ambitions, one of the company's biggest risks. FAW-Volkswagen to produce two new NEV models in Tianjin

FAW-Volkswagen, one of Volkswagen AG's main Chinese joint ventures, revealed plans to produce two new electric vehicle models based on its newly-developed Compact Main Platform (CMP) at its plant in Tianjin from 2027. The news follows the unveiling of three new passenger vehicle concept models based on its CMP - the and - at the Auto Shanghai 2025 show in April. The production plans were revealed following the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between FAW-Volkswagen and the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) government. The models will be designed specifically for the Chinese market, featuring the latest electrification and connected technologies. FAW-Volkswagen's Tianjin plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 units. FAW-Volkswagen pointed out that the CMP platform represents 'a new generation of architecture independently developed in China at 'China speed' for tech-savvy local consumers.' The automaker claims to have shortened the development cycle for CMP-based vehicles by over 30% to keep up with fast-evolving competition in the local market. CMP-based models will include both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid drivetrains and will feature AI-powered cockpits, advanced driver-assistance systems, and over-the-air updates. Last month FAW-Volkswagen announced an internal restructuring programme in relation to its Volkswagen and Jetta brands, which have lost significant market share in China over the last several years as they struggled to keep up with the fast-growing NEV segment. Two new departments have been established, to speed up new product development and strengthen marketing operations.
