Chris Duncan explains how ATT teammate Mateusz Rebecki's 'bad move' led to UFC on ESPN 71
Typically, Duncan (13-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) wouldn't have been keen to move forward with this situation, but it's different. He claims Rebecki (20-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) once offered to fight him on short notice in early 2023, just as they began their time as teammates in South Florida.
Duncan hasn't forgotten that, so when UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby offered him Rebecki in the co-main event slot of Saturday's card at UFC Apex (ESPN, ESPN+), he felt it was within his right to take it.
"I think it's a bad move on him, but I'm happy to do it," Duncan told MMA Junkie at Wednesday's UFC on ESPN 71 media day. "I think he's a very respectful opponent. He was super respectful to me in the gym. We're just going to go out there and clash and I'm going to show him I'm the better fighter.
"It's just unfortunate we train under the same gym, but I'm just very fortunate American Top Team were so professional in regard to keeping us separate in our training in stuff like that. It is what it is. I'm going to make his wish come true."
Duncan knows what is required to get his hand raised, and said he needs to be sharp defensively against someone with Rebecki's level of aggression.
"We all know he comes forward," Duncan said. "He's a brawler. I think he's going to try to wrestle me a little bit, to be honest. It takes no genius to know he's going to come forward with some heat, so have to make sure to not get caught, getting caught in stupid places. I'm looking forward to it. He's a great opponent for me."

UFC on ESPN 71's Kevin Vallejos confident he'll be the first to KO Danny Silva
Kevin Vallejos wants to be the first to put the lights out on Danny Silva. Danny Silva has never been knocked out in his pro MMA career, and Kevin Vallejos has every intention of changing that. Vallejos (15-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) and Silva (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) meet in a featherweight bout at UFC on ESPN 71 (ESPN, ESPN+), which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It's a matchup many fans have circled on the card, given both fighters' styles. Vallejos, who's developing into a fan favorite knockout artist in the UFC, can't wait to test his power on Silva's chin. "I know that I can knock him out, and I will do it on Saturday," Vallejos told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "I know I can knock him out, like I have with other people, who at the time had never been knocked out. This won't be an exception." To some, Vallejos' confidence in getting the knockout may seem like he's overlooking Silva, but that's not the case. "It's a tough fight," Vallejos explained. "I feel like this is a new experience. He's got good boxing, good kicks, good clinch, and wrestling. I think he's going to test me and put me in a spot where I have to show my talent." Despite getting a brutal, first-round KO in his UFC debut this past March, "El Chino" was left without a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. He's hoping to get his this time around with the type of knockout he plans on delivering. "This time it's not getting away," Vallejos said when asked about the bonus. "Last time, we had seven finishes in one night. I don't think I can have that bad luck again and be in a card with that many finishes. This time it will be mine."

UFC Fight Night predictions: Tatsuro Taira vs. HyunSung Park picks, odds, best bets
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. It's not the sexiest card, but there are primetime fights worth betting on this weekend. Twelve bouts are again on the docket this weekend, with an even spread ahead as six fights are projected to end inside the distance. Five of those are projected as lopsided matchups, with favorite odds above -350 at the time of writing. The entire card is on cable television, where it will be a late night, as the prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET and the main card kicks off at 9. Tatsuro Taira vs. HyunSung Park prediction In the main sevent, Taira faces off against Park after losing a five-round fight to Brandon Royval. Taira nearly won that bout but wound up losing by split decision, thanks to some poor striking, and was even nearly submitted by Royval. Park is taking this fight on short notice, as Amir Albazi was not medically cleared to fight, but he was previously slated to meet former title challenger Steve Erceg in August so he should be in shape. 3 Tatsuro Taira poses on the scale during the UFC Fight Night weigh-in at UFC APEX on Aug. 1, 2025 in Las Vegas. Zuffa LLC It was always going to be a step up in competition for Park, and I think the odds are too far out of whack here, as Taira comes in as a -370 favorite. Taira does a poor job keeping his head off the center line, while Park does an excellent job striking and hits with power. Where things could get sketchy for the big underdog is grappling, as Park could easily be taken down and controlled for a 50-45 decision. I have this fight projected at -275 0dds for Taira, so there's about five percent value on Park. I prefer to live bet Park and see how he handles Taira's strong grappling chops. Pick: Live bet Park if he stuffs the first takedown attempt Mateusz Rebecki vs. Chris Duncan prediction Another grappler here getting some respect from oddsmakers, as Rebecki walks into the co-main event slot as a -200 favorite. Duncan is a winner of two straight, shockingly by guillotine choke. That's all well and good since winning two straight as an underdog by submission is impressive, but it could be dicey if you know Rebecki is looking to wrestle. 3 Opponents Mateusz Rebecki of Poland and Chris Duncan of Scotland face off during the UFC Fight Night weigh-in at UFC APEX on August 01, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zuffa LLC Rebecki is a strong grappler who has never been submitted. Duncan is going to have a striking advantage and probably is the better athlete. Regardless, I don't see a finish in the cards for either fighter. Expect a close split decision where beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and bet on the fight to go all the way. Pick: Fight goes the distance (+160, Fanatics) 3 Neil Magny poses on the scale during the UFC Fight Night weigh-in at UFC APEX on Aug. 1, 2025 in Las Vegas. Zuffa LLC Neil Magny vs. Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos prediction The first fight of the main card is between two elder statesmen, as Magny (37) faces dos Santos (38). This fight comes down to who has more left in the tank. At his best, neither fighter was ever really close to a UFC title shot. Mostly they were gatekeepers of the welterweight division. Each fighter has lost three of his last four bouts, although Magny has been forced into fights with title contenders. Magny has first-round knockout losses to Carlos Prates and Michael Morales in his last two fights but defeated Mike Malott by TKO prior to that — but don't forget that he was losing that fight until the KO. Frankly, this feels like two guys who are fighting to get to the scorecards. I project this fight goes to the scorecards more often than not. Pick: Fight goes the distance (-150, BetMGM) Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps Rest of the card Elves Brener vs. Esteban Ribovics: Brenner moneyline (+210, DraftKings) Karol Rosa vs. Nora Cornolle: Rosa by decision (-120, bet365) Danny Silva vs. Kevin Vallejos: Either fighter by KO/TKO (+115, Fanatics) Rinya Nakamura vs. Nathan Fletcher: Nakamura by KO/TKO (+200, BetMGM) Rodolfo Vieira vs. Tresean Gore: Viera Over 1.5 takedowns (-165, Underdog) Nick Klein vs. Andrey Pulyaev: Pass Austin Bashi vs. John Yannis: Bashi by submission when lines come out (+175 range) Rafael Estevam vs. Felipe Bunes: Pass Piera Rodriguez vs. Ketlen Souza: Souza by decision (+300, bet365) Why Trust New York Post Betting Erich Richter is a brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt but he has a black belt in MMA betting.
