Video: 2 killed in Randfontein shoot-out, kidnapped businessman freed
According to Randfontein Herald, police deputy provincial commissioner Major General Fred Kekana confirmed the incident involved a shoot-out and is linked to the kidnapping of a Lenasia businessman, who has since been reunited with his family.
Kekana explained the businessman had been kidnapped more than 40 days ago and held for a ransom of over R15m.
He said one suspect was already arrested on Tuesday.
'Crime Intelligence managed to trace another two suspects, one of them the kingpin, and arrested them in Johannesburg today [July 10]. Thereafter, authorities brought the suspects to the home of the kingpin, where the victim was held,' he said.
Kekana added that when authorities arrived at the house, two more suspects were inside.
'Upon entering, a shoot-out between the police and suspects occurred and, consequently, the two suspects were shot dead. Over the past two years, we have managed to arrest over 170 kidnappers in Gauteng. From January to March, we received 144 cases of kidnapping where ransom was demanded,' Kekana emphasised.

The family of the 60-year-old victim was reunited with him at the scene. In addition to a strong police presence, members of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Visible Policing, CPF and Rand West Neighbourhood Watch were also on the scene.
The newspaper interviewed the victim's son, who said his father was taken from his business premises.
'It was just an ordinary day and it happened so fast. It is a very testing time for the family. We were all emotionally broken. We are thankful to God and to the police. It was a long, dreadful six weeks. We all just prayed for his good health and that a miracle would happen. He is emotionally broken and will need time to recover,' the son said.

Police intercept 30 guns being sent from Gauteng to Western Cape
Police believe the back of a syndicate involved in trafficking unlicensed firearms has been broken. On Monday night an intelligence driven operation involving the anti-kidnapping task team, crime intelligence, the Gauteng provincial investigating unit, Johannesburg K9 unit, Joburg metro police and private security led to the arrest of two suspects in Meyersdal. Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said t he arrest of the suspects, aged 34 and 45, came after several days of surveillance and information gathering across provinces "where suspects involved in the moving of unlicensed firearms were identified". "As the suspects collected the firearms, the team moved in for a coordinated tactical takedown in Meyersdal." Mathe said 30 9mm unlicensed firearms were found in their possession. "Further investigation confirmed the weapons were destined for the Western Cape and the suspects intended to transport the unlicensed firearms themselves. "The suspects have been linked to other cases in Gauteng and the Western Cape. "They are in custody and are facing charges including illegal possession and trafficking of firearms. JMPD steps up patrols against illegal street racing
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed an increase in reports of alleged illegal street racing in parts of the city, particularly Rosebank, Fourways, and Midrand. This comes in the wake of a tragic accident on Jan Smuts Avenue on July 12, in which an Uber driver lost his life. JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said JMPD attended the scene, and a case of culpable homicide has been opened, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) currently investigating. 'These incidents highlight the severe dangers posed by illegal street racing.' The department acknowledged growing concerns raised by community members, as well as by Michael Sun, DA Gauteng spokesperson for community safety, who recently called for visible enforcement and greater accountability. Fihla said that collecting specific statistics on street racing-related arrests, injuries, and fatalities is complicated, as such cases are frequently recorded under broader traffic offences, such as reckless and negligent driving, excessive speeding, or driving under the influence. Despite these challenges, Fihla reaffirmed JMPD's commitment to road safety. He said the department is ramping up patrols and working closely with other law enforcement agencies to hold offenders accountable under the National Road Traffic Act.
