Rally of the Lakes in Killarney to be crucial in championship race
Current regulations stipulate the best five scores from the seven events, however, a place has yet to be found for the postponed Galway International Rally (due to Storm Éowyn) and that is a concern, should it not go ahead, the series will be based on the best five from six.
That will put Edwards at an immediate disadvantage, right now though, he won't or can't think about that, yet it's nigh on imperative that he garners major championship points this weekend.
Devine has a strong record in Killarney - a fourth successive win will edge him closer to the all-time record of five set by the late Bertie Fisher. Having missed the opening round, the Derry driver quickly dialled into the pace showing fine form on his return after a six month absence and took advantage of Cronin's late demise to win the recent Circuit of Ireland.
He will be in confident mood and that should ramp up the pace over the Killarney terrain. The format is competitor friendly with Saturday's loop of three stages relatively close to Killarney (SS1 - Headford starts at 8.15am) while Sunday's action is the familiar double loop over Moll's Gap (SS10, 10.50am), Ballaghbeama and Shanera.
Cronin and his Killarney co-driver Mikie Galvin have unfinished business as the Ballylickey driver explains. "We had a good lead built up on the Lakes twelve months ago when we got the puncture on Saturday afternoon, it cost us well over two minutes. Any chance of winning the rally was gone and I really felt like parking it up, but Mikie (Galvin) pushed me on to keep going. We had another few fastest times on the Sunday and wound up fourth."
There's no lack of motivation, with even more incentive to erase their Circuit of Ireland experience. Having dominated and led until the penultimate stage it only underlined the often cruel nature of the sport. But, Cronin has seen that long before now. "You have to put in the times, but you need a bit of luck as well to get it over the line."
Aware that Devine, Edwards will be his principal rivals, Cronin will manage his own pace, recently, he has expressed the view that he doesn't take the risks he did a few years ago, maybe that comes down to experience (or age) nevertheless, his pace is still hugely competitive.
Welsh driver Meirion Evans brings his Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 to Killarney for an inaugural visit that could prove interesting, especially without the shackles of championship points. Both Monaghan's Josh Moffett and Tyrone's Cathan McCourt have withdrawn from the seeded entry list.
Kilkenny's Eddie Doherty (Skoda Fabia R5) was a late retirement from the Circuit of Ireland with a double puncture on the penultimate stage, he continues to close the gap to Cronin, Devine and Edwards. The capacity entry also has the Donegal quintet of David Kelly (VW Polo GTi R5), Declan Boyle (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2), Michael Boyle (VW Polo GTi R5), Kevin Eves (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Matthew Boyle (Ford Fiesta Rally2) along with Cavan's Gary Kiernan (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Dunmanway's Jason McSweeney (Skoda Fabia R5).
Donegal's Ryan McHugh (Ford Fiesta Rally2) and Tyrone's Ryan Caldwell (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) are the latest additions to the Rally2 category.
As ever, the chase for success in the Modified category includes locals Colin O'Donoghue and Rob Duggan in their Class 14 Ford Escorts with fellow Escort drivers Johno Doogan, Rodney Wilton and Damian Toner providing the opposition. Killarney's Alan Ring (BMW M3) heads the Historic section.

Sligo Rovers' Patrick McClean has red card against St Pat's overturned on appeal
PATRICK MCCLEAN IS free to play for Sligo Rovers in their next League of Ireland Premier Division fixture after his controversial red card against St Patrick's Athletic on Sunday was overturned. With the game level at 0-0 at Richmond Park, Rovers were reduced to 10 men when McClean received a straight red card for a foul on Mason Melia despite clearly not being the last defender, with Sebastian Quirk in position to cover. Advertisement Referee Damien MacGraith's misinterpretation of the situation saw him send off McClean, with Pats going on to win the game 3-0 against 10 men. The result left Sligo Rovers just seven points above bottom-placed Cork City in the race to avoid relegation. The League of Ireland today confirmed that Sligo Rovers' appeal for wrongful dismissal against McClean had been upheld by an independent appeal committee of the FAI, which means the Derry-born centre-back will no longer be suspended for one league match. McClean, the 28-year-old younger brother of Republic of Ireland centurion James McClean, returned to Sligo Rovers in June after seven years with Derry City and Glentoran. He has been a standout performer for John Russell's side since his arrival from Glentoran this summer for an undisclosed fee, scoring two goals from centre-back in his five appearances to date.

Erasmus names experienced side for Rugby Championship opener against Australia
South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has named an experienced side for their opening Castle Lager Rugby Championship clash against Australia at Ellis Park on Saturday. There are 18 Rugby World Cup winners named in the side with just three players who have less than five Test caps for the Springboks - Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Edwill van der Merwe and Asenathi Ntlabakanye - who made his Test debut against Italy in July. The Springboks are in the hunt for their fifth successive win over Australia after defeating them in both Rugby Championship games in Australia last season and once each in 2022 and 2023. Spingbok lock Eben Etzebeth looks set to extend his record as the most capped Bok off all time to 134 matches and will see him pass Ireland's Conor Murray from joint 11th place in the global standings to joint 10th alongside Welsh prop Gethin Jenkins. Erasmus has named an exciting backline with Aphelele Fassi, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Van der Merwe with Jesse Kriel joining Andre Esterhuizen in the centre after Damian de Allende picked up an injury. Speaking about the niggle De Allende picked up Erasmus said 'Damian picked up a back niggle in the last two weeks and will train again this week, but Andre has been strong for us in the last few seasons, so it was an easy decision to name him alongside Jesse in the midfield.' Manie Libbok and Grant Williams will pair up at halfback. Captain Siya Kolisi will wear the No. 8 jersey for the first time in a Test with flankers Pieter-Steph du Toit and Marco van Staden. Etzebeth and Lood de Jager will man the engine room. The front row is made up of Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx and Wilco Louw. Erasmus has gone for a five-three split on the bench with Bongi Mbonambi, Wessels and Ntlabakanye are front row replacements with utility forwards Franco Mostert and Kwagga Smith. The three backs on the bench will be Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse. Erasmus will be experimenting with player combinations during the Series. 'We've been experimenting with player combinations during the Castle Lager Incoming Series and at our conditioning camp in the last two weeks, and we believe this team will allow us to play the type of rugby we want to play against Australia,' said Erasmus. 'The Wallabies will be determined to change their win record against us in the last three seasons, so they'll come out guns blazing, and we are confident that the players we selected will be up for the challenge. 'All of the starters except for Edwill have faced them before, and we are confident that he is ready for this challenge.' Erasmus added: 'Cheslin (Kolbe) has also recovered from a niggle and trained with us last week, but we decided to exercise caution and give him extra time at training before selecting him. Edwill has been in good form this season, and it will be good to see what he brings in this match.' The Wallabies will be heading into the series full off confidence after their 22-12 win over the British and Irish Lions in their Third test while they pushed the Lions all the way to the end in a thrilling second Test with Erasmus expecting a tough challenge from Joe Schmidt's side. 'Australia showed that they are on the right trajectory in their last two matches against the British & Irish Lions and we have no doubt they will enter this match with confidence and determined to build on those performances,' he said. 'They are a physical and well-coached team, and we'll certainly not underestimate how much those performances, combined with their motivation to bounce back strongly against us after the last few results between the teams, and win their first match ever at Ellis Park, will inspire them. 'That said, we have also been working hard to keep building on our game and improve, and we believe our two-week conditioning camp has placed us in the right frame of mind for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. So hopefully we can transfer that hard work into our game to place ourselves in a good position to defend the title.' SOUTH AFRICA (v Australia) : A Fassi, E van der Merwe, J Kriel, A Esterhuizen, K-L Arendse, M Libbok, G Williams; O Nche, M Marx, W Louw, E Etzebeth, L de Jager, M van Staden, P-S du Toit, S Kolisi (c). Replacements: B Mbonambi, J-H Wessels, A Ntlabakanye, F Mostert, K Smith, C Reinach, C Moodie, D Willemse.
