
Saraswati revival mission gains momentum; Rajasthan forms panel
With the support from the HSHDB, the Rajasthan govt formed a dedicated advisory panel on June 18 to work on the reservation and revival of the Saraswati river in the state. The committee includes representatives from key institutions, including ISRO and the state's water resources department. The initiative gained traction after a meeting at ISRO's Birla Institute in Jaipur on April 28, where HSHDB vice-chairman Dhuman Singh Kirmach met Rajasthan's irrigation minister Suresh Rawat, officials from the water resources department, and scientists from ISRO.
The HSHDB proposed collaborative work to reintroduce water flow to parts of Rajasthan through the ancient Saraswati system. Acting on the proposal, Rajasthan has committed to work in tandem with the HSHDB.
Meanwhile, the HSHDB intensified its efforts in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. It began comprehensive geo-archaeological and hydrological studies of the Tons river, a major glacier-fed stream originating from Bandarpunch glacier near Dehradun in Uttarakhand.
Historical and scientific evidence suggests that the Tons river may have been a key tributary of the mythical Saraswati river described in the Rigveda.
Kirmach recently visited Dakpathar barrage near Dehradun, where the Tons river merges with the Yamuna. Data is being collected from revenue records and scientific surveys, including inputs from geologists, hydrologists, and paleo-channel researchers.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) and other institutes have also expressed interest in the study, particularly the suggestion that the Tons river may have originally flowed westward into the ancient Saraswati system before tectonic shifts diverted it towards the Yamuna.
Kirmach claimed that according to multidisciplinary research, including satellite imagery, geomorphological studies, and ancient texts, the Tons river, along with glacier-fed streams like Pabar, Rupin, and Supin, were once integral part of the Saraswati system.
He further said the archaeological and hydrological data pointed towards a scenario in which rivers such as the Yamuna and Sutlej were part of the Saraswati system until 10,000-16,000 years ago.
The HSHDB already demonstrated success in Haryana, where water was channeled through a 400-kilometre stretch from Adi Badri at the Himachal border to the Ottu headworks near Rajasthan border by connecting seasonal rivers during the monsoon.
The goal is to expand this revival from the glacier source in Uttarakhand all the way through Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and finally to the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat.
As part of ongoing efforts, Kirmach also held discussions with researchers at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in Dehradun.

ISRO shares full account of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's Axiom-4 space mission
BENGALURU: As the whole nation celebrates the splashdown of Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on July 15 at 3:02 pm at Pacific Ocean, off California coast as part of the Axiom-4 space mission, India's Gaganyatri has been sent to medical quarantine for seven days for his physical, mental and psychological well-being. In the meantime, ISRO, which had sent Shukla on the mission and invested Rs 550 crore on it, said that the safety and health of its astronaut was its top most priority. The ISRO team also shared a detailed account of the works Shukla had undertaken during his 21-day long space mission, of which 18 days were spent on the International Space Station. ISRO stated that Shukla had adapted exceptionally well to the zero-gravity environment in space. Despite the physical and psychological challenges of spaceflight, he maintained optimal health throughout the mission. He also captured and shared a wide array of photographs and videos documenting his life and works during the low Earth orbit mission. ISRO-led scientific experiments completed Shukla completed a suite of seven microgravity experiments developed by Indian research institutions under the Human Space Flight Centre's (HSFC) coordination. These experiments explored muscle regeneration, algal growth, crop viability, microbial survivability, cognitive performance in space, and the behaviour of cyanobacteria - each aimed at enhancing understanding of human spaceflight and microgravity science. The experiments included- Space Microalgae (developed by ICGEB and BRIC-NIPGR, New Delhi): It assessed the growth and radiation response of edible algae; Myogenesis (developed by BRIC-InStem, Bengaluru): Under this the muscle regeneration with supplement treatment were studied; sprouting of methi and moong seeds in microgravity (developed by UAS & IIT Dharwad); life, resilience and aging pattern of tardigrade (designed by IISc, Bengaluru); cognitive testing with in-flight user interface displays of electronic displays (also designed by IISc, Bengaluru); comparative growth and proteomics of Cyanobacteria in Microgravity (developed by ICGEB, New Delhi); and Impact of microgravity on seed physiology on food crop seeds (developed by IIST and KAU, Thiruvananthapuram).

Exclusive - 'Would Not Have Allowed Axiom Launch If Issues Weren't Fixed': ISRO Chief
New Delhi: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned to Earth after spending 18 days at the International Space Station. He became the second Indian after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma to go to space since 1984 and the first Indian to go to the space station. But the Axiom-4 mission, of which Group Captain Shukla was a part, faced multiple delays before its liftoff. One of the delays was due to a crack in one of the liquid oxygen lines, which was identified after ISRO - led by Dr V Narayanan - insisted on due diligence, a step that averted a major space disaster. The ISRO chief spoke to NDTV and said the Indian space agency would not have allowed the launch of the mission if the SpaceX team had not rectified the problem in the Falcon-9 rocket. How ISRO Averted A Space Disaster On June 10, a day before the scheduled lift-off, a liquid oxygen leak (LOX) was identified on the booster of the Falcon-9 rocket, but it was not fully repaired during refurbishment. Despite the leak, the SpaceX team decided to launch the ailing rocket, with four astronauts, including Shubhanshu Shukla, to space, but ISRO became aware of it and decided to put its foot down to ensure full correction. NDTV was the first to report that there was a leak on the Falcon-9 rocket, which was tasked to carry the four astronauts - Peggy Whitson from the US, Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Slawosz Uzananski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. Today, Dr Narayanan told NDTV, "The safety of Gaganyatri and the other three astronauts is a primary thing. We told them to correct the rocket, and only then will we authorise it. There were a lot of differences in our opinions. Based on our insistence, the launch was called off. After that, they located the leak point, and it was a crack, and everything was corrected. Because of that, it was a successful mission and we (ISRO) had a successful liftoff of the Falcon rocket; otherwise, there would have been a severe problem." "Based on the Indian education system, Indian knowledge and the ISRO team, we stopped and insisted on correction and as a team, finally it was corrected, and we ensured the safe liftoff," the ISRO chief said. The ISRO chief is a top expert on liquid engines and was part of the team that helped India build a cryogenic engine. He is aware of the risks of a liquid oxygen leak. The cracked portion was replaced after Dr Narayanan's insistence, and adequate tests were carried out on the health of the repaired system. Earlier, ISRO said, "During a follow-on coordination meeting between ISRO, Axiom Space, and SpaceX, it was confirmed that the liquid oxygen leak observed in the Falcon 9 launch vehicle has been successfully resolved." 'Working Hard To Make Gaganyaan Program A Success' The ISRO chief said that Shubhanshu Shukla is a Gaganyaatri (Indian astronaut) and part of the Gaganyaan mission - India's crewed flight to space. The team at ISRO is elated to see their colleague return from space after conducting several experiments at the ISS. The agency's chief said, "We are all working hard to make the Gaganyaan mission a success." "The Gaganyaan program was approved by Prime Minister Modi in 2018, and this development involves a lot of things. We have to make a human-rated launch vehicle, the orbital module, crew escape system, environmental control system, parachutes, the entire mission management, and the recovery studies," he said. The ISRO chief said they consulted Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma for the mission. In 2023, the Prime Minister felt the need to send one of the four Gaganyaatri to the space station, and then ISRO signed an MoU with NASA.
