PM Modi meets Mexico, South Korea leaders on G7 sidelines in Canada
Kananaskis [Canada], June 18 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi held separate pull-aside meetings with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.
Prime Minister Modi met President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico during the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, marking the first meeting between the two leaders.
Both sides discussed avenues to further deepen India-Mexico cooperation in trade, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, digital innovation, and shared perspectives on key global and regional issues, including the priorities of the Global South.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared the details in a tweet on X stating that the meeting was aimed at boosting India-Mexico warm and historical ties. It added that both leaders discussed cooperation in trade, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, digital innovation, and shared perspectives on key global and regional issues.

The meetings took place shortly after Prime Minister Modi arrived at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge on Tuesday, where he was received by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the summit venue.
This marks Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit and his first visit to Canada in a decade. He received a ceremonial welcome at the Calgary airport, where India's acting high commissioner, Chinmoy Naik, was among those who received him.
Upon arriving in Calgary, Prime Minister Modi said he will meet various leaders at the G7 Summit and share his thoughts on important global issues. He also said he will emphasize the priorities of the Global South. This visit is part of Modi's three-nation official tour, which began with Cyprus and will conclude with Croatia.
In a post on X, Modi said he had landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit, and that he would be meeting various leaders at the summit and sharing his thoughts on important global issues, while also emphasizing the priorities of the Global South.
Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Modi will be participating in G7 discussions on the future of energy security, including diversification, technology, infrastructure, and investment, to ensure access and affordability in a changing world.
At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi arrived in Alberta, Canada for the G7 Summit. He will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines, Jaiswal added on X.
The Prime Minister arrived in Canada after concluding his visit to Cyprus. Modi's visit to Canada marks a significant moment in bilateral ties following a phase of strained diplomatic relations.
On Monday, India's Acting High Commissioner to Canada, Chinmoy Naik, expressed optimism over discussions set to be held between Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Alberta.
Speaking to ANI, Naik said that Modi has been invited to the G7 Summit by Carney and noted that India will be participating in the G7 Summit as a guest country for the sixth time. He said India will speak about energy security, innovation, and new technologies like artificial intelligence at the summit.
The G7 Summit is an annual gathering of leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the European Union. This marks Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit. (ANI)

India, Canada to revive trade talks as Modi meets Carney at G7; EU free trade pact likely by year-end
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday agreed to revive the stalled trade talks between the two countries. The two leaders met for the first time since Carney took office following Canada's recent elections. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, marked a step toward repairing a relationship that had seen several months of diplomatic chill. Both sides underscored the need to resume negotiations on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) and take it forward with the objective of concluding a broader Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), as per a press note issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Modi and Carney reaffirmed their commitment to shared democratic values and sovereignty, and agreed to restore normal diplomatic presence, including the early return of High Commissioners to each other's capitals, as per the PMO statement. They also highlighted the need to restart senior ministerial and working-level engagements to build trust and momentum, the PMO said in the statement. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in areas such as clean energy, critical minerals, LNG, artificial intelligence, higher education, food security, mobility and digital transformation. Bilateral ties froze, trade talks were paused, and visa services were briefly suspended. The recent meeting between PM Modi and new Canadian PM Mark Carney signals the first steps toward thawing the strained a separate joint press briefing with the President of Cyprus, Prime Minister Modi drew parallels between India's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision and Cyprus's 'Vision 2035,' and called for a five-year roadmap to deepen bilateral ties. The two countries agreed to strengthen defence industry collaboration, initiate dialogues on cyber and maritime security, and set up a real-time information exchange mechanism to combat terrorism and cross-border crimes. Meanwhile, in a joint press briefing with the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, Modi reiterated that the India-EU FTA would be concluded by the end of this year. He had made a similar statement during his Cyprus visit on 16 June prior to the G7 Summit. Cyprus also reaffirmed its support for India's bid for permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council and agreed to enhance cooperation in defence, cyber and maritime security, as well as set up a mechanism for real-time intelligence sharing to counter terrorism, drug trafficking and arms smuggling. Modi said initiatives like the India-Cyprus-Greece Business and Investment Council and new mobility and air connectivity arrangements would help deepen economic linkages with the Mediterranean region.

As Iran-Israel war rages, Telangana and Andhra step up efforts to help their citizens
The governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are taking steps to help their citizens stuck amid the hostilities between Iran and Israel. 'In view of the escalating geopolitical tensions and military developments in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and Israel, the Government of Telangana has immediately activated a dedicated helpline at Telangana Bhavan, New Delhi. This initiative aims to assist and respond swiftly to any concerns related to Telangana residents who may be currently residing or traveling in the affected regions,' Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's office said. According to the statement and latest available inputs from the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian embassies abroad, no Telangana citizens have been reported as directly impacted as of now. However, as a proactive measure, a helpline has been established to provide guidance, collect information, and offer support to families or individuals who may require assistance or wish to report concerns, the statement read. Senior officials of Telangana Bhavan are in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs, embassy officials, and other relevant central authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. There are about 1,000 people from Telangana in Israel, including approximately 100 students. The rest work primarily as caregivers. A Telangana native, R Ravindra, died of a heart attack while under treatment at a hospital in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. His wife, R Vijayalakshmi, said that just around the time the conflict started, Ravindra felt uneasy and visited the hospital. Andhra Pradesh's NRI Empowerment and Relations Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, meanwhile, said the state government reached out to 100 non-resident Indians from the state who are stuck in Iran. 'The Government of Andhra Pradesh has swiftly reached out to over 100 NRIs in Iran and is continuously monitoring the evolving situation,' said Srinivas in a post on X late on Tuesday. He said a 24×7 control room is actively assessing developments and taking all necessary precautions. He appealed to NRIs to stay updated through official Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS) channels. In a post on X yesterday, the Indian embassy in Iran wrote: 'All Indian Nationals and PIOs who can move out of Tehran using their own resources, are advised to move to a safe location outside the City.'
