‘No reason to have disappointment' about draft position: UConn star

Liam McNeeley was thrilled for his friends and high school teammates, Cooper Flagg, Derik Queen and Asa Newell, who were getting drafted. But he kept on waiting for his turn. It was past 11 p.m., and the Connecticut star still hadn't heard his name called. Then it finally happened. With the 29th selection in the first round of Wednesday's NBA draft, the 6-foot-7 wing was off the board. He was taken by the Suns, but the pick was reportedly dealt to the Hornets. 'I've been dreaming of this moment since I was five years old,' McNeeley said shortly after walking across the Barclays Center stage and shaking NBA commissioner Adam Silver's hand. 'This is all I've ever wanted, and this is where the work really begins. So just all the memories and people that have helped me get to where I am, that's where the tears came from. 'It takes so much sacrifice and dedication and passion. I've missed out on a lot of hangouts with my friends, a lot of time with my family. But it's all worth it to me. I love basketball.' McNeeley enjoyed a standout lone season in college with UConn. He averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists, helping the Huskies win an NCAA Tournament game for the third straight season. Liam McNeeley celebrates after being selected with the No. 29 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25, 2025. AP He became the fifth Connecticut first-round pick in the past five years. There were questions about his ability to defend at the next level, along with his 3-point percentage of 31.7. Ultimately, those issues contributed to the Texan falling to the bottom of the first round. But McNeeley insisted he wasn't upset afterward. He was more relieved. UConn star Liam McNeeley is all smiles after he was drafted. NBAE via Getty Images 'You know, there's no reason to have disappointment,' McNeeley said. 'I just got drafted to play in the NBA.' McNeeley was one of two Big East players drafted in the first round. Thomas Sorber of Georgetown was the other. He was taken 15th by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Asked which players he was looking forward to facing in the league, McNeeley immediately thought of his former Montverde Academy (Fla.) teammates Flagg, Queen and Newell. 'Getting to play against them is going to be amazing,' he said.

New Jaylen Brown, Derrick White Trade Report Hours Before NBA Draft

New Jaylen Brown, Derrick White Trade Report Hours Before NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics' chances of winning next season's NBA title dramatically decreased when Jayson Tatum ruptured his Achilles in the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks, leaving co-star Jaylen Brown as the best player. The Duke alum will likely miss the entirety of next year, and the Celtics are now looking toward the future. Advertisement Boston broke up the nucleus that won the 2023-24 championship by trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday and Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. They received Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks for Holiday along with Georges Niang and another second-rounder for Porzingis. There's also speculation that they could trade Brown or Derrick White, which The Stein Line's Jake Fischer spoke about on Wednesday afternoon. Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown (7), forward Jayson Tatum (0), guard Derrick White (9) and forward Sam Hauser (30)David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports "I don't believe the Celtics plan to move Jaylen Brown or Derrick White tonight," he reported. "That's been the word out of Boston since May." Advertisement White is under contract for three more seasons before his player option in 2028-29, while Brown is scheduled to hit free agency in the summer of 2029. Brown averaged 22.2 points on 46.3 percent shooting with 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists this past season, while White averaged 16.4 points on 44.2 percent shooting with 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists. Boston's trades this offseason shed about $24 million in salary, which moved it under the second apron. That will give the club flexibility with free agency and trades. The Celtics own the Nos. 28 and 32 picks in the 2025 draft. The first round will be on Wednesday night, and the second round will be on Thursday. Celtics' Brad Stevens Makes Jaylen Brown Statement After NBA Draft

Celtics' Brad Stevens Makes Jaylen Brown Statement After NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics didn't make the biggest headlines in Wednesday's draft, but what's most notable is the moves they didn't make. After trading Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis over the previous couple days, they kept Jaylen Brown and Derrick White. Advertisement Brown was linked to the Utah Jazz heading into the draft, via ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel. Several teams in the top 10 also made offers for Brown and White, via ESPN's Brian Windhorst. However, the Celtics kept two of the players most instrumental to their 2023-24 championship squad. General manager Brad Stevens opened up about the decision after the first round concluded on Wednesday night, via SB Nation's Noa Dalzell. Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown (7)Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images 'We've got the foundation," he explained. "With Jaylen and Jayson [Tatum] and D-White and Payton [Pritchard], and all those guys that a lot of teams would love to have.' Boston is unlikely to contend without Tatum (Achilles) next season, but it could reload for the 2026-27 campaign. The Celtics' newest player could be a part of that effort. They picked 6-foot-6-inch, 223-pound guard Hugo Gonzalez No. 28 overall on Wednesday, who played for Real Madrid the last three seasons as well as the junior and senior Spanish national teams. Advertisement Stevens raved about Gonzalez during the presser, via Dalzell. "We've been watching Hugo for a long time... big fan of how he plays," he said. "He's tough, he's hard-playing, he cuts, he goes after the ball, he competes. He's got all the intangibles of a winning basketball player." Boston also owns the No. 32 overall pick. The second round of the draft will be on Thursday night.
