"In preparation for the Raksha Bandhan festival, special arrangements have been made at three bus stands. Officers have been assigned booth-wise to ensure smooth operations. From 12 PM on August 8 to midnight on August 9, all women and children up to age 15 travelling with them will be allowed free travel," said General Manager of State Transport, Rahul Jain.
The scheme will apply to all state-run services, including kilometre scheme buses, mini buses, and ordinary buses. "Yes, it will include kilometres buses, our mini buses, and ordinary buses, all buses," Jain confirmed.
A total of 159 buses will operate on all routes during this period. "Almost 159 buses will run on all routes," he stated.
Jain also provided updates on the GPS tracking system for buses. "50 per cent of our depot work has been completed; we will complete the rest," he said, adding that the system will be implemented on all buses. "GPS system will be implemented on all buses; GPS system has already been installed on the kilometres scheme," he noted.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday also announced a free travel facility for women in the buses operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Cooperation on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, as per an official statement.
The CM also extended greetings on Raksha Bandhan, stating that the festival symbolises mutual affection and trust, and is associated with rich cultural traditions and historical significance. Dhami also highlighted the state's continuous efforts on women's empowerment.
"The dream of a prosperous Uttarakhand cannot be fulfilled without empowering women. We expect the people of the state to cooperate in the creation of an ideal society for the empowerment of women and their progress," the CM said.
Meanwhile, in a heart-touching incident that took place during the CM's visit to Dharali, a tourist from Gujarat who had been trapped due to the flash floods and landslides tore a piece of her dupatta and tied it to the CM. Dhangauri Baraulia, a resident of Ishanpur in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, had come to Uttarakhand with her family for Gangotri Darshan. Due to the terrible disaster on August 5, she got stuck with her family in Dharali.
The situation had become extremely challenging due to the blockage of the road, continuous debris, and strong currents.
The Chief Minister himself has been monitoring the relief operations by being present in the area continuously for three days. Due to the tireless efforts of the rescue teams, Mrs. Baraulia and her family were evacuated safely.
The Chief Minister also humbly accepted this emotional moment and said that the state government stands with every affected citizen in this hour of disaster and every possible help will be provided. He said that the state government is working with full commitment for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
This scene of human sensitivities in a remote area like Dharali became an example of hope, faith and social solidarity amidst the disaster.

Domestic travel booms owing to long I-Day weekend
The upcoming extended weekend [Independence Day on Friday followed by Saturday and Sunday] has led to many people from Bengaluru make domestic travel plans. With Krishna Janmashtami also falling on August 16, both to and fro travel from Bengaluru has increased. 'The extended weekend is driving a substantial increase in travel from Bengaluru with demand for flights, hotels, and holiday packages noticeably higher than last year. There is a clear preference for bookings to popular and easily accessible getaway destinations such as Goa, which have jumped by more than 80%. The increased demand on key routes to Mumbai and New Delhi has pushed fares higher during peak hours,' said Rikant Pittie, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip. A few others have also been opting for destinations in Karnataka which can be reached in a few hours owing to the limited time that the weekend offers. 'Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru, which are the usual favourites during monsoon are gaining traction with many looking to book properties there while we have seen a slight increase in arrivals to Bengaluru too. As North Karnataka is too hot to travel during summer, we have seen a little bit of demand to destinations like Hampi over this weekend,' said Prathap Gowda, manager at a private tour organising agency. Puducherry, Kerala, and Hyderabad have also attracted many bookings from travellers from the city. According to PeekABoo, Cleartrip's travel trends tracker, popular air routes to/from Bengaluru are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Pune, Hyderabad, Varanasi, and Jaipur among others. Similarly, popular bus routes include Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, Vijayawada, and Pune. It has also noted that there has been a 60% increase in bookings for hotels in Bengaluru. 'Many people could not travel to their hometowns last weekend during Raksha Bandhan as the demand was high and the fares were higher. Since people believe that they can tie rakhis throughout the month, they are using this long weekend as an opportunity to travel back home and also spend a little time there,' Mr. Gowda noted. Despite the increased demand, fares continue to be stable across multiple modes of transport. 'I am travelling to Delhi this weekend to belatedly celebrate Raksha Bandhan. I had expected the flight tickets to be expensive than usual due to the long weekend. But it was only ₹1,500 more than usual, which is not a significant amount,' said Riya Jadhav, a bank employee who resides in the city. International destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Don Mueang, Bangkok etc. which can be covered in a shorter period have also been preferred. The long weekend also led to traffic snarls on Wednesday evening in places like Silk Board and Hebbal which connects the city with highways.

Tourism takes off: Long weekend promises strong gains for the industry
NEW DELHI: India's travel and hospitality sector is set for a strong upswing this long weekend, with early trends indicating that travellers are heading to popular destinations in large numbers. The absence of steep hikes in airfares and room rates is further encouraging many to make last-minute travel plans. "Long weekends have always been a popular reason for travel among travellers, and the window between Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan is no exception,' Manjari Singhal, Chief Growth and Business Officer, Cleartrip told TNIE. He added, 'Leisure travel has seen a significant increase following recent geopolitical developments, with rising interest in monsoon retreats, spiritual journeys, and wellness-focused getaways as travellers seek more meaningful experiences.' Almost 2 crore passengers travel on MSRTC buses over Raksha Bandhan weekend
The long Raksha Bandhan weekend, coupled with holidays, saw a huge passenger surge for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation. From August 8 to 11, nearly two crore people rode MSRTC buses, and the corporation earned a revenue of Rs 137.37 crore—around Rs 16 crore more than in the same period last year, thanks to some extent by a fare increase. Monday saw the highest single-day collections of over Rs 39 crore, as per MSRTC officials. Narali Purnima on Friday, Raksha Bandhan on Saturday, and Sunday were followed by the return journey rush on Monday. Assuming such demand, the MSRTC deployed extra buses at the divisional level. Also, parallel services were operated on routes where the passenger load exceeded 60 per cent. Revenue collections were Rs 30.06 crore on Friday, Rs 36.86 crore on Saturday, Rs 33.36 crore on Sunday, and Rs 39.9 crore on Monday. As many as 1.93 crore passengers availed of the service in these four days, and 88 lakh of them were women. Several of them got the 50 per cent fare concession under the Mahila Samman Yojana, for which the MSRTC is compensated by the Government. MSRTC officials said that Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj during Diwali are traditionally among the most revenue-generating days for the corporation. 'Family outings on these festivals result in a big spurt in intercity and intrastate travel. We plan our timings accordingly,' an MSRTC official said. 'This time around, the extra services we ran during the festival season ensured we were able to meet the demand well and post higher revenues.'
