Juventus beat Dortmund in friendly, spoil Hummels' farewell party
Berlin
Juventus were the inconvenient guests as they defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and spoiled Mats Hummels' farewell party on Sunday.
The friendly match was the last one for Dortmund ahead of the start of the new football season in Germany and the club used the occasion to officially say goodbye to their former defender Hummels.
Andrea Cambiaso hit the net in the 16th minute and then again in the 53rd before Maximilian Beier pulled one back for the hosts in the 89th.
Hummels captained Dortmund and when he was subbed off in the 19th minute, he received a standing ovation from the stadium and a guard of honour from both teams.
'I'm feeling great, it was perfect. I couldn't have imagined something better, to play football seriously again. I had a lot of fun playing here,' Hummels said.
Asked whether he was nervous ahead of the match, he said: 'I was as nervous as before many other games because I didn't know where I stood (in terms of fitness). But it went well. I had so much fun.' The defender ended his career after a difficult final season at Roma following his Dortmund exit last year.
Hummels was a Bayern Munich academy product and spent two terms each at Bayern and Dortmund, winning five Bundesliga titles and three German Cups with them. He earned 78 Germany caps highlighted by the 2014 World Cup title.
Hummels said he could list '100 favourite moments' during his Dortmund career, but he eventually named the first Bundesliga title with the club in 2011 as the top one.
'There are so many great moments and this is beautiful,' he said.
He will remain in the sport as a Prime Video Champions League pundit but he also told broadcasters ZDF that he plans no real immediate full return to the pro football scene over the next year or two.
Dortmund start the new season with a German Cup match against Rot-Weiss Essen on August 18. Their Bundesliga opener is on August 23 against St Pauli.
Coach Niko Kovac will have concerns about defender Niklas Süle, who replaced Hummels but left the pitch with a calf injury shortly before half-time.

PL to place greater emphasis on holding in penalty area
PA Media/dpa London More penalties could be awarded in this season's Premier League with referees instructed to keep a close eye on holding in the box. The PA news agency understands greater emphasis will be placed on holding in the 2025-26 campaign, in particular where officials consider it sustained and impactful. Officials will give consideration to whether there is a clear impact on the opponent's ability to play or challenge for the ball, and where there is a clear, extreme action which impacts an opponent's movement. Referees and VARs will also take note of whether the holding player's focus is on the ball or the opponent. Last season, Nottingham Forest were awarded a penalty against Brighton after Tariq Lamptey was penalized for holding on to Morgan Gibbs-White, and referees will be on the lookout for similar offences in the new campaign. Simulation will be another area of focus, with referees urged to book players who clearly attempt to deceive them. Referees will also immediately signal for doctors or physios to come on when a player appears to have suffered a head injury. The player will leave the field for further assessment and remain on the touchline for a minimum of 30 seconds after the match has restarted. Referee body cameras will be trialled in the Premier League this season, but sources indicated they would not be used until match round three at the earliest. They will provide extra angles for broadcasters to use in their live coverage, but will not be used to replay controversial incidents. As first reported by the PA news agency last month, referees will announce the outcome of VAR reviews except for factual offside and onside decisions. The high bar for VAR intervention will be maintained this season, with 83% of game stakeholders surveyed earlier this year - including players, managers, directors and supporters - supporting a continuation of the threshold. There was also strong support for continuing to follow the same interpretation of handball offences, with 78 per cent thinking the level was correct. Referees will not see it as a punishable offence if the arm is in a justifiable position, is supporting the player's body, where a player plays the ball on to their own arm, where there is a clear change of direction when touched by the same player, where the ball is played by a team-mate or where there is close proximity. Handballs will be penalized where there is a deliberate movement of the arm away from the body, there is clear additional arm movement or the arm position makes the body bigger and is unjustifiable. Only nine penalties were awarded for handball in the Premier League last season. This will also be the first Premier League campaign since the introduction of the eight-second rule for goalkeepers holding on to the ball. Referees will start to count down once the goalkeeper is in full control of the ball and is completely unobstructed by any opponent. A corner will be awarded to the other team where goalkeepers exceed the eight-second limit, while any attacking player who pressures or prevents a goalkeeper from releasing the ball during the countdown will be penalised by the awarding of an indirect free-kick.

Thomas Muller gets warm welcome from Whitecaps fans in Vancouver
dpa San Jose, California Former Bayern Munich icon Thomas Müller received a warm reception from Vancouver Whitecaps fans as he touched down in Canada on Wednesday evening to begin the next chapter of his career. Müller, 35, was greeted at Vancouver International Airport by representatives of the Musqueam Indian Band, who welcomed him with a traditional drum march and a speech from Chief Wayne Sparrow. The 2014 World Cup winner was not given a contract extension at Bayern this year and left the club for which he won countless titles, including trebles in 2013 and 2020. He now has a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps that runs through the end of 2026. Müller signed his first autographs for supporters in the arrivals hall before heading upstairs to a sports bar, where fans were watching the first leg of the Canadian Championship semi-final against Forge FC. The competition's winner will be crowned Canadian champions. 'I am happy to be here, to be a Whitecap,' Müller told the crowd. 'We wanna create the future, but the game is still running so we have to support the guys.' The match ended 2-2, though Müller had departed in a dark van before the final whistle. The veteran forward is set to face the media for the first time as a Whitecap on Thursday and is expected to train with his new teammates the following day. Club officials expect him to make his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut at home against Houston Dynamo FC on Sunday. The MLS season, already in full swing since February, runs separately from the Canadian Championship, which is an annual tournament. MLS is the top-flight professional soccer league in the US and Canada, though it only features three Canadian sides.
