Somerset music group for dads and tots at risk of closure

BBC News30-07-2025
A music group for children that provides a space for dads to bond is at risk of closure.Charity Evolve Music hoped to raise £2,500 to save its Saturday morning Dads Rock group in Worle from closing, a music session for male caregivers and their children.About 20-25 men attended the sessions for free but the charity was relying on donations to pay the professional musicians who run the group.Annette Burghes, executive director of Evolve Music said: "It's really just a quite a rare opportunity for them to be in a space with other dads with the little ones and talk about their parenting role."
"They're just really beautiful and uplifting sessions, they are rare spaces for dads to get together" Ms Burghes said."The impact of the sessions has really just blown us away, as a team, and I think for new dads, they're a lifeline."I think with dads there's such a limited opportunity for them to connect with other dads and I think that's really where the value of Dads Rock is. The longevity of the outcomes that are beyond what happens in the hour and a half session."The charity has currently raised about £100.

Henley leads PGA Tour Championship with Scheffler in pursuit

Russell Henley rode a hot putter to a nine-under par 61 and a two-shot lead over top-ranked Scottie Scheffler on Thursday at the US PGA Tour Championship, where a star-studded field is chasing a $10 million top prize. Henley, the world number four who captured his fifth PGA title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, broke free atop a crowded leaderboard with three birdies to close his round at East Lake in Atlanta, Georgia. The American had made a strong start with two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, adding back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13 before he drained a 42-foot birdie at 16 to launch his closing burst. He added a 34-foot birdie at 17 and got up and down from a greenside bunker for birdie at the par-five 18th. His 207 total feet of putts made included three from beyond 30 feet. "I putted as good as I can putt," Henley said. "I felt like I was clear on my reads. Last week I felt like I played really well and didn't give myself a bunch of looks because I couldn't figure out how far the ball was going and struggled a little bit on the looks of those greens. "(Today) just felt a little more clear in my mind on what I thought the ball was going to do ... just kind of free-wheeled it a little bit." He walked off the 18th green with a three-shot lead but Scheffler -- who has won five times in his last 10 starts and nabbed major titles at the PGA Championship and British Open this year -- closed with back-to-back birdies in a bogey-free seven-under par 63. He was a stroke in front of five players sharing third on six-under 64. "I hit some fairways and I holed some nice putts as well," said Scheffler, who got his round going with birdies at the second and third and added another at the sixth. Unhappy with his approach at the 10th he nevertheless rolled in a 27-foot birdie putt, and after a birdie at 15 managed to get up and down for par from the dangerous right rough below the elevated green at 16. "I knew going down there right of 16 was a huge penalty," Scheffler said. "We had talked about it in the practice rounds, and our job was just to get the ball back on the green, which I did, and it was nice to hole that long putt." He drilled another 27-foot birdie at 17, then blasted out of a greenside bunker to four feet at 18 and made that putt for solo second moments before approaching thunderstorms would have halted play. - Unlikely McIlroy birdie - Two-time major winners Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa were in the tie for third on 64 alongside fellow American Patrick Cantlay, Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and England's Tommy Fleetwood. Thomas was in the lead at seven-under through 15 holes, but made a double bogey at 16, where his chip from the right greenside rough failed to reach the green. Scheffler, the defending FedEx Cup champion, topped the standings heading into the three playoff events and further solidified that spot with a victory at the penultimate event, the BMW Championship, last week. Last year Scheffler's position atop the points list meant he started the Tour Championship at 10-under and with a two-stroke advantage over the number two on the list. This year, all 30 players who made the finale started even with the winner to collect $10 million. Masters champion Rory McIlroy, second in the standings coming in, carded a four-under par 66 that included an 30-foot eagle at the sixth and an unlikely birdie at 18, where his shot out of a greenside bunker flew the green, hit the grandstand and bounced back onto the putting surface to leave him a 17-foot putt. bb/st

Developers seek to build condo complex for downsizing seniors

ANDOVER — The Select Board will soon decide whether to endorse a local initiative to develop a condominium complex at 84/88 Andover St. Greg Minott, of the Dream Collaborative, and Bill Perkins, of Hearthstone Realty Corporation, presented their development proposal at the Aug. 11 meeting. The project, Trailside Andover, would allow for Andover residents to age in place and enable seniors to downsize while remaining in their community. 'This supports the housing diversity in Andover,' Minott said. The 40-home, mixed-income condominium community is designed 'for our neighbors, especially longtime residents potentially ready to downsize from their home (who) don't have many choices and in many cases, end up leaving Andover,' Minott said. He said he's heard stories of people with larger homes and a lot of equity who look to stay in town but can't find a suitable option so they end up leaving. 'That's a loss for us,' Minott said. 'That's a loss for the town.' There would be features to make living easier and safer with a mix of home sizes to serve individuals and couples. Trailside Andover would have 30 market-rate units and 10 affordable housing units. The affordable housing units are aimed to appeal to local seniors and veterans. 'This is age targeted, not age qualified, so anyone can live here,' Perkins said. The complex would be located near the intersection of Andover Street and Dascomb Road on 2.52 acres of land across two parcels where there are two vacant homes. The land is relatively flat and accessible which makes it ideal for senior-friendly housing, Minott said. 'We don't come across sites like this very often and I think it's a big need for the town,' Perkins said. The land is near AVIS trails for walking and adjacent to Bear Mountain Nursing Home. The area is zoned as single residence B zoning. A Massachusetts Local Initiative Program (LIP) application would give the project relief from zoning restrictions. The complex would provide options for one- and two-bedroom units between 1,200 and 1,500 square feet. The vision is to have a condominium complex which utilizes a single-level layout, wide doorways and step-free entrances for the units along with elevator access for the residents. Minott said the units are comfortable, but low-maintenance living options. Outdoor and below-street level garage parking is also proposed. Gaining the Select Board's support is the first step for the project's team. The proposal would still need to go through the Zoning Board of Appeals. Town Clerk and Deputy Town Manager Austin Simko said this is a local initiative petition brought under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 40B. Upon the Select Board's support, the applicant then goes to the Zoning Board of Appeals for a comprehensive permit. 'You're in the unusual position of seeing this kind of application,' Simko said. Town lawyer Doug Heim said the ZBA process is more detailed, but every project under Chapter 40B has to obtain project eligibility. The ZBA looks at the granular details to see if there are any community concerns or if the project doesn't work. It would need to go through multiple hearings, and give opportunities for public comment. Heim said the Select Board's role is to determine if this is a project it wants to endorse and support. But he added an endorsement can weigh heavily on whether the comprehensive permit eventually gets granted. Board members said they would want feedback from abutters and any concerns from residents. But Chair Alex Vispoli said he can see the market for this type of complex. 'In concept, I think it's an ideal situation,' Vispoli said. The goal is to start construction in spring 2026 through summer 2027, Minott said. Early move-ins are projected for 2028. The Select Board will hold a second reading of the proposal at a future date. Match-ups for legislative seats set for Washington's November election

Democratic state Sen. Deb Krishnadasan, left, is running to keep a seat she was appointed to in the 26th Legislative District. Challenging her is Republican state Rep. Michelle Caldier, right. (Photos courtesy of campaigns) With Washington state's primary in the books, the focus shifts to the November general election for nine Democratic state lawmakers seeking to keep seats to which they were appointed. Each of them won Aug. 5, some more easily than others, in results certified Wednesday by the secretary of state's office. In the closest primary contest, Democratic state Sen. Deb Krishnadasan beat Republican state Rep. Michelle Caldier by 1,158 votes in the 26th Legislative District that spans parts of Pierce and Kitsap counties. It is expected to be tight when they face off again this fall. Krishnadasan trailed Caldier on election night. She moved in front on the second day of ballot counting and stayed there. Republicans view this race as their best opportunity to gain a seat in the Senate, where Democrats hold a 30-19 edge. In another high-profile match-up, Democratic Sen. Victoria Hunt finished comfortably ahead of Republican Chad Magendanz, a former state lawmaker, in the 5th District in east King County. As the only two candidates, they will line up against each other again in a few weeks. In the 48th District, two Democratic candidates — Sen. Vandana Slatter and Rep. Amy Walen — are advancing. Slatter sent a strong message by garnering nearly 60% of the vote in the district encompassing Redmond, Bellevue and Kirkland. Democratic Rep. Edwin Obras and fellow Democrat Kevin Schilling, the mayor of Burien, advanced in the 33rd District in south King County. Obras won with 47% followed by Schilling with 31%. Republican Darryl Jones finished with nearly 22%. Walen and Schilling are each considered the more moderate candidates in those two contests. In the 41st District, Democratic Rep. Janice Zahn and Republican John Whitney will square off in November. Zahn is heavily favored after capturing 64% of the vote to Whitney's 28%. This district includes Mercer Island and Newcastle, along with parts of Bellevue, Renton, Issaquah, and Sammamish. In the 48th District, Democratic Rep. Osman Salahuddin garnered 63% to finish ahead of Republican Dennis Ellis, who had nearly 29%. Democrat Ranga Bondada was a distant third. Three appointed legislators — state Sens. Tina Orwall of Des Moines and Emily Alvarado of Seattle, and Rep. Brianna Thomas of West Seattle — were unopposed but will still appear on ballots in November. Orwall serves in the 33rd District. Alvarado and Thomas represent the 34th District in Seattle. Ballots for the Nov. 4 general election will be mailed to voters by Oct. 17.
