Scottie Scheffler becomes ridiculous favorite at The Open

The post Scottie Scheffler becomes ridiculous favorite at The Open appeared first on ClutchPoints. The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush has already seen wild storylines play out. Bryson DeChambeau made history, following up his 78 with a 65 on Friday to make the weekend. Captain Keegan Bradley put himself in a great position, prompting more Ryder Cup talk. But all eyes are on World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler entered Friday's second round in a good spot, signing for a 3-under 68 on Thursday. But early on, it appeared there was little chance he could hold the lead entering the weekend after 2023 Open winner Brian Harman went low, climbing to 8-under. Then Scheffler said the proverbial, 'hold my beer.' The 3-time major champion came out white hot, birdieing four of his first seven holes, including three straight. The moment he climbed to 7-under, his odds of winning the Open Championship skyrocketed. As the X account Covers posted odds from BetUS, you could not even get him at even money any longer. Scheffler made the turn in just 32 strokes. The Ridgewood, New Jersey native was going off at -115. Meanwhile, the closest competitor was 2022 U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. Granted, since those odds were posted, Fitzpatrick has also caught fire with four straight birdies. He is the first playing in The Open field to reach double figures at 10-under. That has boosted his odds from the listed +600, but Scheffler is still easily the favorite. In fact, there are only two golfers within 10 times the odds of the world's best player. Scottie Scheffler continued to chase down Fitzpatrick, too. He began his back nine the way his front ended, with another birdie on the par-4 10th. To no one's surprise, Scheffler leads the field in strokes gained, a stat that he has dominated to historic levels over the last couple of years. The heavy rains have kicked in at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. It will make for an interesting finish to the second round of the Open Championship. Scottie Scheffler on Grand Slam doorstep after dominant Open Championship win

The post Scottie Scheffler on Grand Slam doorstep after dominant Open Championship win appeared first on ClutchPoints. Scottie Scheffler has won the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. After picking off the PGA Championship at Valhalla in May, Scheffler is now one major short of the career Grand Slam. A mere formality after a dominant Saturday, the World's No. 1 player waltzed to victory with a Sunday 68. Scheffler never left the top five of the tournament, firing a three-under, 68 on Thursday. He followed that up with a birdie barrage on Friday, shooting 64 with a blistering hot putter. Scheffler never let go of the lead after that, opening up a four-shot lead on Saturday and slamming the door on Sunday, beating Harris English by four. The Open Championship had not always been the kindest to Scheffler before this week at Royal Portrush. He finished T-7 in 2024 and T-8 in 2021, with finishes in the 20s between the two. But he never waivered in 2025, even with Rory McIlroy's hometown crowd and some solid Sunday charges. This was the tenth consecutive time Scheffler has closed out a 54-hole lead, an incredible streak. This stat from Justin Ray of TwentyFirst Group shows why. 'Scottie Scheffler has a final round scoring average of 68.8 when holding the 54-hole lead or co-lead on Tour. It's the best scoring average of any player in that situation over the last 30 years (min. 10 rounds).' Scottie Scheffler sits on the doorstep of history Scheffler looked like he was going to charge to a double-digit win, but a double-bogey on the eighth stopped that momentum. Still, his dominance is reaching levels only a select few have. 'If Scottie Scheffler wins by 3 or more, he will be the first player to win his first four professional majors (as they are now defined), each by at least 3 shots, since John Henry Taylor. Taylor was born in 1871,' Ray posted. The 2024 season for Scottie Scheffler was historic, and his injury halted the beginning of 2025. But once that healed, he ripped off two of the four majors, getting on the doorstep of the career Grand Slam. When Rory McIlroy won The Masters, he won his fifth major and the career Grand Slam. Scottie Scheffler has four and could become the seventh Grand Slam winner at the U.S. Open next year. Sunday of the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills will be Scheffler's 30th birthday. Sunday at the 2025 Open Championship was exactly 1,197 days after Sunday at the 2022 Masters. Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler took the exact same amount of time between their first and fourth majors. From an existential press conference to a dominant win, Scheffler was the story all week. Scottie Scheffler is on a Tiger Woods pace after The Open

Five days after Scottie Scheffler waxed poetic about not finding his life's joy from winning golf tournaments, he won another golf tournament -- a big one. The Open Championship. His first win at The Open, and his fourth career major title. True to form, Scheffler celebrated with the thing that does bring him fulfillment, his family. Which made for one of the cutest Open moments. But if winning is fighting a losing battle against Scheffler's family in bringing him joy (as it should, by the way), a pursuit of Tiger Woods-like greatness might be enough to make it a really close second. And after his latest win, Scheffler is on a pace that makes that chase a reality. SCOTTIE'S FAMILY: 9 sweet photos of Scheffler, wife and son Like Woods, Scheffler went 1,197 days between his first and fourth major wins, which is a wild coincidence for the player who's come as close to the dominance of Woods as anyone over the last few years since the GOAT has faded from the top of the sport. Of course, there's one major difference between the pace of Woods and Scheffler, that being their respective ages at the time of their fourth major. Woods was 24 when he won the 2000 Open Championship. Scheffler is 29. Woods' win also gave him the career grand slam, which Scheffler is still a U.S. Open short of completing. But Scheffler still has a lot of golf ahead of him, and doesn't appear to have any real competition at the top of the field. So, while I won't sit here and say he will definitely match Woods' 15 career major championships, it's hard to say he's not in position to give it a good try. And contrary to how people interpreted Scheffler's comments last week, he said he does enjoy competing. So, I don't expect him to let up anytime soon. "I've literally worked my entire life to become somewhat good at this game, to go and play this game for a living, and it's one of the great joys of my life being able to compete out here," Scheffler said Sunday after his latest win. I think it's safe saying we're past the point of "somewhat good." WNBA labor battle dominated All-Star Weekend The WNBA's best players descended on Indianapolis last weekend for the All-Star Game, using the attention of the moment to put a spotlight on their labor battle amid ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. There's no secret the players want (and deserve) a bigger slice of the W's revenue split. They haven't been shy about that message, even wearing pre-game shirts with "Pay Us What You Owe Us" across the front. Unbeknownst to them, the fans would also help push that message, chanting "pay them" after the game when commissioner Cathy Englebert hopped on the mic. The players also demonstrated their worth in ways that weren't as overt as shirts and chants. Every time I opened X, it seemed like I was coming across a new viral W clip from the weekend, and most weren't basketball-related at all. It was just players being themselves, dancing, having a good time, and fans were eating it up. It was just another example of the league's booming popularity. And contrary to what some will have you believe, it wasn't just one player (OK, maybe a lot of it was Courtney Williams). There's a reason the WNBA is expanding so rapidly and franchise valuations are up 180 percent over last year. That's why now is the perfect time for players to push this message. The weekend wasn't perfect by any means -- I'm not sure what Kelsey Plum was trying to accomplish by throwing shade at Team Caitlin Clark -- but from my view, it was a success in gaining public support as an October deadline to land a new CBA looms.
