Pending Texans signing could have domino effect on Cowboys RB competition Much to the chagrin of the the Cowboys' fanbase, the Dallas front office has not shown much interest in free agent running back Nick Chubb. Once regarded as the best running back in the game, Chubb's been on the market since the beginning of the 2025 league year in early March, but has yet to latch on to a team. Now that OTAs are concluded, and teams have had a chance to evaluate what they have on their depth chart, there's usually an uptick in activity when it comes to the veteran FA landscape. In that vein, reports have come in that Chubb is ready to land at his new home, and the fourt-time Pro Bowler who is now 29 years old is heading to Texas. More specifically, he's headed to the Houston Texans, according to ESPN's report. And while Cowboys fans may be upset they aren't landing the 56 total touchdown, almost 8,000-yard producer, there could be a silver lining. The Texans depth chart will have Chubb joining Joe Mixon at the top of the things, as well as fourth-round pick Woody Marks from USC. That likely means that at some point this offseaon, Dameon Pierce is going to either be placed on the trade block or released outright, and that's someone who should be of key interest to the Cowboys. Pierce, a 2022 fourth-round pick who totaled over 1,000 yards from scrimmage as a rookie, averaged 7.3 yards a carry in limited backup action in Houston in 2024. He had 40 carries, one of which was for a league-high 92 yard score last season. Even without that jaunt, Pierce averaged over 5.1 yards a carry on his other carries. The 25-year old had a disastrous second season where he averaged just 2.9 yards a carry in his first season of Bobby Slowik's offense, but bounced back in a decreased role. The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency, and drafted University of Texas back Jaydon Blue in the fifth round in April. None of those players should be seen as above reproach as the Cowboys don't have a bell-cow approach to this season. Dallas might not be in a position to outright trade an asset, but a pick swap to acquire him should be considered, and they absolutely should kick the tires if Pierce hits the open market.

Sources told NFL Network, ESPN and The Athletic on Sunday night that Chubb is expected to sign the one-year deal if he passes a physical on Monday in Houston. Chubb, who joined the Browns as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, amassed 6,843 rushing yards and 56 total touchdowns over the first seven years of his career. He appeared in just 10 games over the last two seasons, when he was limited by knee and foot injuries. The four-time Pro Bowl selection is expected to join a Texans backfield led by veteran running back Joe Mixon, who totaled 1,325 yards from scrimmage and 12 scores last season. Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks, Dare Ogunbowale, J.J. Taylor and Jawhar Jordan are among the other running backs on the Texans roster. Texans players will report for mandatory minicamp on Tuesday and Wednesday in Houston.
