Complete oil palm cultivation targets, Collector tells officials
Addressing the gathering, the Collector stated that for 2025–26, the district has been assigned a target of cultivating oil palm in 550 hectares and instructed officials to work towards achieving it.
He highlighted that oil palm is a viable and profitable crop even under adverse climatic conditions and that the government aims to help farmers benefit financially by promoting this crop. He urged the officials to encourage farmers to take up oil palm cultivation and create awareness about its benefits. He emphasised that the crop could offer long-term income security to farmers and help stabilize their livelihoods.
Under the National Mission on Edible Oils–Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), 13 mandals in Kurnool district have been identified for oil palm cultivation, including Kurnool, Krishnagiri, C Belagal, Kowthalam, Adoni, Holagunda, Mantralayam, Peddakadubur, Kosigi, Nandavaram, Yemmiganur, Alur, and Gonegandla. Farmers with access to irrigation facilities in these mandals are eligible for the scheme and the government will provide oil palm saplings free of cost, offering a 100% subsidy.
Additionally, the government will extend support of Rs 5,250 per year for four years towards crop maintenance, along with another Rs 5,250 per year as intercropping incentives. The harvested crop will be procured directly by designated companies, ensuring market security for farmers. Terming oil palm as a high-income crop, the Collector urged farmers to adopt it on a large scale.
Joint Collector Dr B Navya, DRO C Venkata Narayanamma, District Horticulture Officer Ram Anjaneyulu, APMIP Project Director Srinivasulu, and other officials were present at the event.

TNPDCL mulls hike in additional surcharge for open access buyers
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has filed a petition before the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) seeking approval to increase the additional surcharge payable by open access consumers from the present rate of 10 paise per unit to Rs 1.14 per unit. If TNERC accepts the proposal and issues necessary orders, open access consumers — referring to the category of high tension (HT) consumers who buy (electricity) from third party sale and power exchanges — have to pay the new additional surcharge for the period from October 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026. The commission has ordered that the petition be uploaded on its website for public comments and has fixed September 16 as the date for the next hearing. It has asked all comments to be submitted latest by September 2. K Venkatachalam, Chief Advisor and CEO of Renewable Energy Producers Association, told TNIE, 'The proposed additional surcharge of Rs 1.14 is nearly 12 times higher, which is highly abnormal. Already, we are paying around Rs 10 per unit towards wheeling charges, cross-subsidy and other costs on power transmission. Open access consumers are already burdened by the multi-year tariff year on year. At this stage, the fresh hike to the extent to be increased, will hit the industries, especially spinning mills, hard.'

Kota-Bundi airport project too
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday cleared a proposal to set up a new airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan at an estimated cost of Rs 1,507 crore. Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the greenfield airport project will be funded by the Airports Authority of India.
