Govt had earlier identified 402 persons for alloting houses in the township.
Revenue minister K Rajan announced this at the memorial meeting held for victims of the landslide at MSA auditorium, Meppadi, on the tragedy's first anniversary on Wednesday. State cabinet decided to include the 48 families recommended by DDMA and one case, which came up during hearing, in the list, he said.
Rajan said hearings were held for 100 persons, who submitted applications for inclusion in the list, and physical examination as per guidelines would be held in Aug and a decision taken accordingly.
The decision to include 49 persons will provide relief for families that complained of being excluded from the list citing technical reasons.
Rajan said govt was working towards completing the construction of houses in the township by Dec 31.
Cabinet decided to construct a memorial at 'July 30 Hridayabhoomi' burial site at Puthumala where many victims of the disaster are buried, he said. Govt approved a proposal worth Rs 99.93 lakh submitted by Nirmiti Kendra for memorial construction.
He said Rs 6 crore was issued for follow-up treatment expenses of those injured in the landslide and the free treatment scheme was extended from Aug 31 to Dec 31. One hospital will be assigned as nodal hospital and treatment bills from private hospitals will be reimbursed, he said. Many landslide survivors complained of being forced to pay from their pockets for treatment at private hospitals.
Cabinet also decided to provide compensation to entrepreneurs who lost their livelihood in the Chooralmala disaster. A committee comprising Wayanad collector and senior officials from local self-govt and industries departments will review and recommend the compensation amount and eligibility criteria.
Cabinet instructed Wayanad collector to take urgent steps to grant record of rights (ROR) for land identified to rehabilitate 13 tribal families affected by the landslides. Steps will be taken to issue ROR for five hectares.

Punjab's groundwater crisis: 19 districts overexploited, says ministry in Lok Sabha

Chandigarh: In a grim indicator of Punjab's deepening water crisis, the central govt has identified 19 districts in the state as "over-exploited" and one as "critical" in terms of groundwater usage. The categorisation reflects fast-depleting water tables and increasing stress on the state's groundwater resources. According to a reply in the Lok Sabha by Union jal shakti ministry in response to a question by MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the 19 over-exploited districts include major agrarian and urban regions such as Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahih, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Mansa, Moga, Patiala, Mohali, Nawanshahr, Sangrur, and Tarn Taran. Ropar was designated as "critical" under the 2025 Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain (JSA:CTR) campaign. These 20 districts were chosen by the Central Ground Water Board based on parameters such as declining groundwater levels, geographic distribution, and inclusion in the aspirational district framework. The categorisation aims to prioritise focused monitoring and implementation of water conservation measures at the grassroots level. The ministry said that between 2021 and 2025, a total of Rs 1,186.06 crore was spent in Punjab under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan. This includes Rs 417.96 crore on the renovation of traditional water bodies, Rs 337.49 crore on watershed development, Rs 338.40 crore on intensive afforestation, Rs 85.02 crore on water conservation and rainwater harvesting, and Rs 7.19 crore on reuse and recharge structures. An additional Rs 25 lakh was released to Punjab for GIS mapping of water bodies and preparation of district-level water conservation plans. The Centre launched JSA: CTR on March 22, 2025, under the theme "Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Jan Jagrukta Ki Ore", with an emphasis on community participation and convergence of govt schemes. Across Punjab, over 1.09 lakh water-related works were conducted over the last five years, and Jal Shakti Kendras (JSKs) were established in all 23 districts, each of which also drafted water conservation plans. The ministry reiterated that "water is a state subject" but added that the Centre continues to provide both technical and financial assistance to support state-level efforts. Nationwide, the campaign saw over 1.87 crore water-related interventions till July 26, 2025, and 712 JSKs were set up across India. The overexploitation of groundwater, not only for agricultural irrigation but also for domestic and industrial purposes, has become a major challenge in Punjab. Concerns have been raised that without timely corrective measures, the state could face acute water shortages in the coming years. MSID:: 123018665 413 |

Maharani college hostel roof plaster falls, exposing crumbling RU infrastructure

1 2 Jaipur: In an incident that has raised serious concerns about student safety, plaster from the roof of University Maharani College's Annie Besant hostel fell Thursday morning exposing dangerous cracks on the roof, just one day before the institution's 82nd foundation day. While no casualties were reported, the incident at the girls' college sparked outrage among students and their representatives, highlighting a systemic failure in maintaining educational infrastructure. The college administration's attempt to restrict media coverage - denying entry to TOI photographer - has only intensified scrutiny of its handling of this infrastructure crisis. Deputy chief minister and higher education minister Prem Chand Bairwa shared on X, "I received information that the roof and walls of Maharani College have been damaged; it is extremely worrying. Taking immediate cognisance of this matter, RU vice chancellor and the registrar have been directed to immediately inspect all colleges under the university, including Maharani College, and ensure immediate solution to repairs, structural improvements or other problems. " The collapse, triggered by three days of heavy rainfall, has exposed the deteriorating condition of multiple educational buildings under the University of Rajasthan (RU). The Maharani College has two hostels—Annie Besant & Mother Teresa Hostel and Veerangana Kali Bai Bheel Hostel. Currently, 200 girl students are residing in Annie Besant Hostel alone, which was built in 1948. Students reported widespread issues, including water leakage during examinations, suggesting a pattern of neglect. "Such an incident has happened due to the carelessness of the University. Is the RU administration waiting for some mishap to take place before it acts?" demanded student representative Dev Palsaniya, highlighting the administration's apparent apathy. NSUI state president Vinod Jakhar escalated the matter, citing previous safety incidents including electrical issues with water coolers. "I demand from the state govt that the RU vice chancellor and the administrative officials concerned should be made accountable," Jakhar stated, calling for immediate inspection and concrete measures to ensure student safety. College principal Payal Lodha acknowledged the crisis, confirming that eight hostel rooms and 10 campus rooms have been locked due to safety concerns. "This is an over 80-year-old college campus, which needs repairs and maintenance, and within next 15 days, work towards that will start," Lodha said, adding that RU has sanctioned approximately Rs 2 crores for repairs at the college. The crisis extends beyond Maharani College. At the University Maharaja College, opposite the girls' college, similar infrastructure issues plague classrooms and the library. The incident comes in the wake of a tragic school building collapse in Jhalawar where seven students of primary classes died due to roof collapse last week, prompting faster fund sanctions across educational institutions in Rajasthan. Maharaja College principal GP Singh said that funds of Rs 1.5 crores have been sanctioned by the RU for repairing the building and roof, Rs 15 lakhs for repairing the library and Rs 11 lakh for repairing the infrastructure at the Statistics department. Authorities, however, said that repairs cannot commence until the monsoon season concludes, leaving students vulnerable to further mishaps.

Anbil Mahesh's supporters walk out of Trichy corpn council meet

Trichy: Dramatic scenes unfolded at Trichy corporation's monthly council meeting on Thursday as a section of DMK councillors and their alliance parties from areas managed by Trichy south district DMK unit walked out to condemn the construction work on a chicken waste recycling plant in Ariyamangalam dump yard. A total of 27 councillors, mostly supporters of school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who is the Trichy DMK south district secretary, walked out stating that despite the minister's intervention, the local body did not stop the work. However, councillors largely from Trichy central district unit, considered as loyalists of municipal administration minister K N Nehru, stayed back. Work is on for the plant, proposed to convert 35 tonne of chicken waste a day into pellets for being used as feed in fish farms. The local body allocated 8,000 square feet inside the dump yard to a private firm to develop the plant at a monthly rent of Rs 56,000. However, raising apprehensions of bad odour emanating from it, Thiruverumbur residents approached local MLA Anbil Mahesh to stop the work. "Despite our minister's (Anbil Mahesh) appeal, as the work on the poultry waste recycling unit is progressing much against public interest, we decide not to participate in the meeting," DMK councillor and zone III chairman M Mathivanan said before leading the walkout. Councillors P Govindarajan (Congress) and S Suresh (CPM) too joined them. Councillors of wards far away from the dump yard also boycotted it. Claiming there was no factional feud in the party, DMK councillors who walked out said they had only democratically conveyed their displeasure for public welfare. "Work on the recycling plant was already stopped on the instructions of our minister (K N Nehru). So far, 30 out of 48 acres of Ariyamangalam dump yard has been retrieved, and the biomining process will retrieve remaining dump yard soon" mayor Mu Anbalagan said. Inset - Women councillors protest Ahead of the walkout, DMK councillors R Malarvizhi (ward 64) and V Leela (ward 49) had heated arguments with the mayor over Malarvizhi's house in KK Nagar being vandalised by a contractor last week. The attack was a fallout of the councillor questioning lapses in the stormwater drain construction taken up by the contractor. The women condemned the attack and complained about an 'insecure environment even for councillors. ' "The contractor will be blacklisted," the mayor told them.
