Revealed: Why supercoach Wayne Bennett will have a shock new look at the NRL's Magic Round footy festival

Daily Mail01-05-2025

Eyebrows were raised last Friday night among members of the press after Wayne Bennett did not appear for his routine post-match press conference.
The Rabbitohs had suffered their fourth defeat of the season, going down by eight points against the Storm and members of the press were ready to gather in the media rooms at AAMI Park to quiz the South Sydney boss following the ANZAC Day clash.
Reporters were ready to quiz the super coach on everything from the team's performance to Latrell Mitchell's high tackle.
But in his place appeared the Bunnies' assistant boss, Ben Hornby, who shared the news that the Rabbitohs boss had lost a tooth.
'Wayne's tooth fell out, so he's not talking too clearly, so he's not talking real clearly, so he's let me have a go tonight,' Hornby said.
'Ask him to smile,' he joked before delving into the match.
It has now been revealed by The Courier Mail that Bennett, 75, had been chomping on a liquorice chocolate bullet prior to the match, with his tooth subsequently falling out.
The outlet reports that the Souths boss has made multiple trips to the dentist since the match.
The footy coach has reportedly had his tooth glued back in but it keeps falling out.
Bennett will be back at the helm for this weekend's Magic Round fixture against the Newcastle Knights, still without his tooth, with the footy great now booked in for an emergency dental procedure next week.
'I'm coming to Brisbane toothless,' he said laughing.
'I was eating one of those liquorice chocolate bullets before the game and my front tooth just snapped on me.
'I went to the dentist to get it glued back in, but I've had it fall out about three or four times now.
'I had to keep going back to the dentist so I thought stuff it, I'll just wait until next week to get it fixed.
The Rabbitohs were beaten by Melbourne Storm on ANZAC Day in what was their third loss on the bounce
'I was a bit embarrassed at first but now I'm getting used to looking at myself with a missing tooth.
'I'm getting it fixed next Tuesday.'
The Rabbitohs will be looking to bounce back this weekend having suffered three defeats on the bounce slumping to 11th in the table.
The Knights have also endured a torrid run of form at the start of 2025 having lost their last five matches including a 26-12 defeat against the Warriors in their last run out.
Reflecting on the Rabbitohs defeat to the Storm last week, Hornby revealed that changes to the squad have hampered them but that wasn't an excuse, with the side needing to front up.
'There was a lot of effort, the boys really tried hard, but the execution wasn't there, hasn't been for the last couple of weeks,' Hornby said.
'In some ways, it is an easy fix but when you're making the changes we are from week to week it's getting difficult.'
On swapping out players in the line-up he added: 'It's not ideal but we've persevered and done pretty well so far this year with the changes that we've had. We're not using that as an excuse but it does make it more difficult to build more cohesion. So that's where we're at.'

'Karen Millen's breastfeeding comments are infuriating example of mum-shaming'

Like a lot of mums I know, Karen Millen's been mentioned all over my social media feed since she appeared on Jeremy, Storm & Vanessa On 5 this week. Vanessa Feltz highlighted the story of a mum in the USA who has gone viral for breastfeeding her three-year-old, and been trolled since posting her video. Karen Millen, a fashion designer, said that she found the whole thing "selfish". Despite not being a health expert, she then proceeded to declare "there's no benefit is there for a child to be breastfed beyond six months" - the World Health Organization disagrees. Karen, who designs clothes but is not a renowned child psychologist, then throws in "that's not good emotionally for that child", and that she thinks it's "not normal" and "weird". As for her claims that it becomes an addiction - where are the stats or science to back that up? Because I personally have yet to meet an adult who's calling up their mum for a breastfeed because they are so used to the boob. I am just weeks out of my breastfeeding journey, and those comments really hit a nerve, leaving me infuriated. I wasn't alone - other mums around me, some of whom can't see a light at the end of the breastfeeding tunnel just yet, were also livid. These comments are just another example of society shaming mums. If you don't breastfeed, that's bad. If you do breastfeed, that's bad. You just can't win. Any mum who has breastfed will know how much of a rollercoaster the experience can be. There are some truly wonderful highs; the bonding with your baby, the cuddles, the fact that it's super convenient because you don't need to remember bottles. But there are also plenty of lows; the long nights where the baby cluster feeds and there's only so much your partner can do to help, the pressure to always be near your baby because they can't feed without you, the physical and mental toll it takes on your body. I know some mums who are more than ready to be done with it, but their babies aren't, so they are pushing through. 'Selfish' is absolutely not a word I would use to describe any of those women. Then there's the societal pressure. From the moment my baby was born, I had health professionals, family members, friends and random people I didn't even know telling me that breastfeeding was the best course of action (I actually disagree with this sentiment too - mums have enough to deal with, however you choose to feed your baby is best). All the mums around me - no matter how they choose to feed their babies - have been navigating the world of parenting, and there are so many opinions out there, it can be so overwhelming. I can't help but think if I'd seen those comments when I was having a particularly rough night or difficult day, it would have absolutely left me feeling deflated and useless. Mums - and dads too - deserve to get all of the support they can, and unless they're doing something that genuinely could harm or put a child in danger, who are we to judge to another parent's decision? The World Health Organization's official recommendation is: "WHO and UNICEF recommend that children initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life – meaning no other foods or liquids are provided, including water. "Infants should be breastfed on demand – that is as often as the child wants, day and night. No bottles, teats or pacifiers should be used. "From the age of 6 months, children should begin eating safe and adequate complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years of age or beyond." See that last bit? OR BEYOND. So no, I don't think it's "selfish" or "weird". I think if a child is happy and healthy and loved, who cares if they're being breastfed or not?

Panthers rout Oilers 6-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final

SUNRISE, Fla. — Taking advantage of the Edmonton Oilers' worst performance in several weeks, the defending Florida Panthers pounced on mistakes to win Game 3 in a 6-1 rout Monday night and take a 2-1 series lead. Brad Marchand became the oldest player to score in each of the first three games of a final, while Sam Bennett added his NHL playoff-leading 14th goal after making a big hit on Edmonton's Vasily Podkolzin that contributed to the turnover to spring him on a breakaway. Marchand and Bennett have combined to score eight goals for Florida, which was dominant in just about every way. "We ended up playing what Florida kind of wanted," said Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner, who got pulled after allowing five goals on 23 shots. "They were great tonight." And it was not just Bennett and Marchand. Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart each got his first goal of the series, Aaron Ekblad scored to chase Skinner and Evan Rodrigues added the exclamation point in the waning minutes. "We're a very deep team," Marchand said. "That's one of our strengths is the depth of the group from the front end to the back end to the goaltending." At the other end of the ice, Sergei Bobrovsky earned the "Bobby! Bobby!" chants from a fired up South Florida crowd. The two-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender known as "Bob" was on his game for the very few quality chances the discombobulated Oilers mustered, making 32 saves. "Nothing's going to be perfect in the way we play," Reinhart said. "This time of year, you need some world-class goaltending and that's what we get consistently." Perry — at 40 the oldest player in the series — beat Bobrovsky with some silky hands for a power-play goal, keeping up this final being a showcase of cagey veterans along with Marchand. Connor McDavid could not get his team on track, and Edmonton took 15 minors — led by Evander Kane's three plus a misconduct to add up to 85 penalty minutes — including a brawl that ensued with less than 10 minutes left. Trent Frederic and Darnell Nurse, who fought Jonah Gadjovich, got misconducts that knocked them out of a game with an outcome determined long before. "Emotions in all these games are extremely high,' Marchand said. "This is the time of year you want to be playing, and you're enjoying every minute." After the final looked as evenly matched as can be with Games 1 and 2 each needing extra time, overtime and then double OT, Game 3 was a lopsided mismatch. The Oilers came unglued to the point Jake Walman resorted to squirting water on Panthers players on their bench from his spot on the visiting side. The teams have some extra time off before Game 4 on Thursday night, when the Panthers have the chance to take a 3-1 lead and move to the verge of going back to back.
