Vietnam stay calm amid Harimau's war dance

KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia procure more and more naturalised players, their rivals, Vietnam are just their natural selves — staying cool.
Harimau Malaya's neighbours calmly go about their training, which began at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre on Saturday.
Malaysia's latest announcement is that Colombian-born striker Rodrigo Holgado has joined their team for the Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10.
Vietnam Football Federation vice president Tran Anh Tu and general-secretary Nguyen Van Phu had met with head coach Kim Sang Sik — who guided Asean All Stars to a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Bukit Jalil on Wednesday — and their players, and talked about the importance of tactical discipline.
The Vietnam team appear confident, and the country's veteran football commentator Quang Huy said that Sang Sik has a core of experienced players well-versed in their national team's playing style and tactical requirements.
"I believe Vietnam can secure at least one point in this away match, then aim for victory at home in the return leg," Quang Huy reportedly said.
Vietnam have brought in newly naturalised French-Vietnamese defender Cao Quang Vinh Pendant who used to play in France's Ligue 2 and former national striker Nguyen Cong Phuong after a two-year absence.
Cong Phuong told the Vietnamese media: "I can feel the strong spirit and desire to contribute from everyone in the team."
Vietnamese football pundits believe the limited time that Malaysia's naturalised players have spent together could affect the team's chemistry.

Spurs' Tel responds to racial abuse after Super Cup defeat

TOTTENHAM Hotspur forward Mathys Tel has declared he will not be broken by the racial abuse targeted at him online. The abuse followed his penalty miss in Spurs' UEFA Super Cup shootout defeat to Paris St-Germain last Wednesday. The club issued a strong statement expressing their disgust at the treatment of the 20-year-old French player. Tel addressed the situation directly on his social media channels on Tuesday. He stated his disappointment with the match result but was unequivocal in his stance against racism. 'I know where I come from, where I started and none of this will bring me down,' Tel wrote. He emphasised that respect, hard work, and humility will always prevail. This incident is not isolated within the Premier League this week. Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo was also subjected to racist abuse during his team's 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Friday. Merseyside Police confirmed a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing the player. The individual has been released on conditional bail and is banned from attending any football matches. Reuters

Wolves sign 'fastest player in Serie A' Tchatchoua

LONDON: Cameroon defender Jackson Tchatchoua, hailed as the fastest player in Serie A last season, has joined Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers from Italian side Hellas Verona on a five-year deal. Wolves said the deal for the Belgium-born right wing-back included a 12-month option. No financial details were given but the BBC put a €12.5 million (RM61 million) price tag on the signing. Tchatchoua was recorded hitting a speed of 36.3kph last season, according to the club, and scored two goals with three assists. The 23-year-old is Wolves' fourth new signing of the transfer window. "The Premier League is one of my dreams and it's one step that I want to do in my life, and also the history of the club, the stadium, the fans, this convinced me," he said. - REUTERS

Facundo clarifies his Harimau Malaya status

KUALA LUMPUR: National team defender Facundo Garces has clarified his status as a heritage player for Malaysia. The Argentine-born Garces was reported as saying that one of his "great grandparents" was from Malaysia. Garces, however, later clarified that his statement in a recent interview with Spanish portal, El Correo was misreported as he had said "grandparents", not "great grandparents". Fifa only recognises heritage players with links to their grandparents. The Alaves FC player declared his pride in being a Malaysian citizen, as he has Malaysian blood because of his grandparent. "It was just a transcription error (El Correo interview). I am Malaysian from my grandparents roots and I'm honoured to play for my country," he said in an Instagram post. In June, Argentine media outlet reported that Garces, who previously played for Club Atletico Colon in Argentina before joining Alaves in Spain, has a Malaysian grandmother. "For Facundo Garces, who once played with Colon, it is understood his connection to Malaysia is through his grandmother," reported Garces starred in Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10.
