MIDF Research: Oil prices under pressure as supply outpaces demand

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Crude oil prices are expected to remain under pressure and could fall below US$65 per barrel (pb) due to persistent oversupply and weaker demand projections, according to MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research). However, MIDF Research noted that prices may stabilise over the longer term, even as inventories continue to rise. Sentiment surrounding trade policy developments between the United States (US) and China remains a significant risk to market movements, it said in a note today. 'Natural gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) are expected to see a rebound after May 2025's maintenance round concluded for most of the global gas and LNG facilities. 'Nevertheless, the downside risks to the lower oil price remain on new exploration projects, but may be beneficial for onshore storage, long-term tankers and retail fuel,' it said. MIDF Research opines that the scenarios of the global oil market and global economy will continue to keep Brent crude oil price within the US$60-65 pb range, averaging around US$62 pb in June 2025. 'This lower expectation is considering the risks of post-US trade tariff pause, as well as the stockpiling of oil inventories in the near term,' said MIDF Research. Meanwhile, the investment bank said Asean collaborations have offered a brighter outlook for the oil and gas (O&G) sector. MIDF Research stated that Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is continuing its aggressive exploration and production (E&P) activities in the upstream sector, despite lower crude oil prices. Meanwhile, the midstream and downstream divisions are expected to turn towards sustainability and green energy solutions, integrating these initiatives into their operations. 'During the Asean summit that concluded in May 2025, the transportation and logistics of LNG and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were highlighted as strategic priorities for the region. 'More focus was set on renewable energy and hydrogen projects to be integrated with the conventional O&G developments, providing a balanced and sound energy transition as highlighted in Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR),' it noted. MIDF Research added that regional cooperation is likely to expand through energy security, carbon credit management, Environmental Corporation America (ECA) compliance and CCS solutions. 'In addition, we opine that domestic demand and robust LNG exports will continue to locally support the sector. 'Overall, we retain a 'Neutral' view on the O&G sector, as it continues to face challenges, primarily from oil price volatility, driven by output hikes from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus (OPEC+) and non-OPEC producers, including sluggish global demand due to tariff-related uncertainties,' it added. — Bernama

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs as part of restructuring program

NEW YORK, June 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble (P&G) on Thursday revealed its plan to eliminate 7,000 non-manufacturing jobs, approximately 15 percent of its current total non-manufacturing workforce. The reduction of workforce will take place over the next two fiscal years staring from July 1, 2025, according to a release by P&G. "Specific impacts by region or site are not available at this time," the company added. In response to the job cuts, P&G stated, "As always, employee separations will be managed with support and respect, and in line with our principles and values and local laws." This initiative is part of a broader strategy to accelerate growth and value creation by enhancing productivity across the company's portfolio, supply chain, and organization design. This move is expected to result in pre-tax charges between one billion U.S. dollars and 1.6 billion U.S. dollars over the next two fiscal years, according to the release. P&G plans to divest certain brands and product categories, particularly in markets where it faces economic challenges. Additionally, P&G aims to enhance supply chain efficiency by right-sizing and right-locating production. The company also intends to create a more agile organizational structure, incorporating digitization and automation to drive further efficiency gains. The announcement was made during the 2025 Deutsche Bank Global Consumer Conference, where P&G's executives emphasized the importance of these strategic adjustments in maintaining the company's competitive edge in the consumer goods industry. The restructuring does not remove the near-term challenges facing P&G now, according to P&G Chief Financial Officer Andre Schulten. Current tariffs would result in a three cent to four cent-per-share drag on P&G's earnings in its fiscal fourth-quarter ending on June 30, according to Schulten. Tariffs also are expected to cost the company 600 million U.S. dollars in fiscal year 2026, which starts from July 1, 2025.

Procter & Gamble to cut 7,000 jobs, exit brands in new restructuring

NEW YORK: Procter & Gamble will cut 7,000 jobs, or about six per cent of its workforce, over the next two years, as part of a restructuring that will include the Tide maker exiting some product categories in certain markets. The two-year restructuring plan comes as consumer goods giants P&G and Unilever brace for muted demand in 2025 stemming from growing uncertainty due to US tariffs. "This is not a new approach, rather an intentional acceleration of the current win in the increasingly challenging environment in which we compete," P&G executives said at a Deutsche Bank Consumer Conference in Paris on Thursday. The initiative could likely include some divestitures, the company said, without providing additional detail. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on trading partners have roiled global markets and sparked concerns of a recession in the US. The Pampers maker imports raw ingredients, packaging materials and some finished products into the US from China, while the vast majority - roughly 90 per cent - of what it sells is produced domestically, P&G has said. The company on Thursday estimated about US$600 million before-tax hit in its fiscal year 2026, based on current tariff rates. The trade war has cost companies more than US$34 billion in lost sales and higher costs, a Reuters analysis showed, a toll that is expected to rise. In April, P&G said it would raise prices on some products and that it was prepared to pull every lever in its arsenal to mitigate the impact of tariffs. Pricing and cost cuts were the main levers, CFO Andre Schulten had said then. On Thursday, Schulten and P&G's operations head, Shailesh Jejurikar, acknowledged that the geopolitical environment was "unpredictable" and that consumers were facing "greater uncertainty." The company had about 108,000 employees as of June 30, 2024, and said the job cuts would account for roughly 15 per cent of its non-manufacturing workforce. P&G expects to record charges of US$1 billion to US$1.6 billion before-tax over the two-year period, with a quarter of the charges expected to be non-cash. The restructuring would help simplify the organisational structure by "making roles broader" and "teams smaller", the company said. The plans to divest certain brands will also help adjust its supply chain in order to reduce costs, P&G said.
