All Blacks name five debutants in Scott Barrett-led squad for three France Tests

New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson raised eyebrows on Monday by naming five uncapped players in his 33-man squad for the upcoming three-Test rugby series against France. Scott Barrett will captain the side, while notable omissions include Dalton Papali'i, Ethan Blackadder, and David Havili.The new faces in the squad are forwards Brodie McAlister, Ollie Norris, Fabian Holland, and Du'Plessis Kirifi, along with winger Timoci Tavatavanawai.
Robertson described the squad selection as a mix of 'continuity and opportunity', aiming to blend experience with fresh talent ahead of the Tests in Dunedin, Wellington, and Hamilton next month."Around three-quarters of the players named today were part of our squad for the 2024 northern tour, which is important because we want to continue to build on the rugby we were playing at the end of last year," he said. "We have balanced that with an exciting group of new and returning players who have performed during Super Rugby Pacific.
"For the five uncapped players this is a particularly special day," he added.
The All Blacks have also recalled hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho and centre Quinn Tupaea, marking their returns after extended absences - Taukei'aho last played in 2023, while Tupaea hasn't featured since 2022.
Scott's brother Jordie Barrett and seasoned flanker Ardie Savea named as vice-captains.

Gambhir on Bumrah's participation in the next Tests India head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah will not be overburdened during the ongoing Test series against England, stating that the star pacer will only play in three of the five scheduled matches. Despite India's defeat in the opening Test at Headingley, where Bumrah stood out as the only consistent threat with the ball, the team management will stick to its pre-planned strategy to manage his workload. 'No, we won't change the plans,' Gambhir said. 'For us, managing his workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket coming up and we know what he brings to the table. Before he even joined the team, it was decided that he's going to play three Test matches.' Gambhir emphasises on good batting displays When asked specifically about vice-captain Pant's back-to-back centuries, Gambhir brushed off the praise. 'There are three more centuries as well. Those are big positives as well. Thank you,' he responded curtly, referring to other notable contributions with the bat. Prodded further about any positives from the match, he expanded: 'I would have liked if you said there was a hundred from Yashasvi (Jaiswal), hundred from Shubman (Gill) on debut as captain. Hundred from KL (Rahul) and two centuries from Rishabh, so five centuries in a Test match is a great start to be honest. And hopefully the question could have been better.' India posted a solid total and set England a challenging target of 371, but the hosts chased it down on Day 5, led by Ben Duckett's commanding 149. Despite a five-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah and strong individual batting performances, the result left the Indian camp disappointed. 'These are great positives, we had a fifer from Jasprit Bumrah as well,' Gambhir noted. 'Eventually everything boils down to the fact that... we go out there to get the results.' He further stressed the importance of team success over individual milestones: 'Yes, individual performances are good, we want those big runs from our top six or seven, which we got in this Test match. But at the end of the day, you go out there to win a Test match.' 'Unfortunately, that wasn't the result. So we take it on the chin and move forward,' he concluded, signaling India's intent to bounce back strongly in the remainder of the series.

Dropped catches, middle-order failures cost India Test
Leeds, June 24 (UNI) India captain Shubman Gill today termed the Headingley Test a 'brilliant contest' despite his side suffering a five-wicket defeat to England, citing dropped catches, lower-order batting failures, and missed opportunities as key factors behind the loss. Reflecting on the result, Gill admitted that India had their moments. 'We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough,' he said after the match. 'But I'm proud of the team – overall a good effort.' India had contemplated setting England a target of around 430 and declaring earlier, but faltered towards the end of their second innings. 'Yesterday we were thinking around 430 odd and declare. Unfortunately, we didn't score runs at the end, which always makes it difficult,' he added. On England's chase of 371 – their fifth successful 300-plus fourth-innings pursuit at Headingley – Gill acknowledged the momentum shift. 'It happened so quickly. Could be one of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches. Definitely, chances don't come easy on wickets like these.' He praised the Indian bowling effort early on Day 5, noting how the conditions changed after the ball softened. 'The first session we were quite spot on, didn't give away many runs. It's hard to stop the runs once the ball softens. Unfortunately, some edges didn't go our way. They took their chances after the ball got old. That happens in a game of cricket.' Gill reiterated the learning curve for a relatively young Indian squad. 'It's a young team, learning one, and hopefully we will be able to improve on those aspects,' he said. KL Rahul drove his way to a sublime 47 after England negated India's advantage by totalling 465 in their first innings as the visitors had another ordinary day in the field on day three of the first Test. India dropped as many as five catches and barring Jasprit Bumrah, the effort from the pacers left a lot to be desired, allowing England to even out the game after the Shubman Gill -led side posted 471 in its first essay. At stumps, India reached 90 for two with Rahul (47 batting off 75) and Shubman Gill (6 batting off 10). Brydon Carse had Yashavi Jaiswal (4 off 11) caught behind with a ball that seamed away while Ben Stokes got rid of debutant Sai Sudharsan (30 off 48) for the second time in the game, the southpaw's flick falling into the hands of Zak Crawley at mid-wicket. He did not look any discomfort whatsoever despite the ball doing a bit in overcast conditions. Stumps were drawn when rain arrived at Headingley with India leading by 96 runs.
