Amarnath Yatra: Facial Recognition System Flags First Suspect, Alleged OGW Detained Langanbal
Today, during routine surveillance using the newly installed FRS, the system successfully flagged a suspicious individual whose facial data matched entries in the security database. Upon immediate verification and investigation, the individual was identified as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) affiliated with a terrorist outfit, according to a statement by Anantnag Police on X.
The suspect was promptly taken into custody, and a detailed investigation is currently underway to ascertain his links and any potential threats. This successful identification and detention underscore the effectiveness of the Facial Recognition System in preemptive threat detection and maintaining public safety.
The FRS, part of the enhanced security framework for the Yatra, has been deployed along the Pahalgam route and other paths leading to the holy cave. The system provides real-time alerts — including a hooter at the surveillance center — to identify blacklisted individuals, such as active terrorists and suspected OGWs, by analyzing facial features against a secure database.
This technology-driven approach is aimed at ensuring a secure pilgrimage by deterring potential threats and strengthening surveillance across the Yatra corridors.
The operation highlights the Anantnag Police's broader efforts to leverage technology for public safety during high-profile events like the Amarnath Yatra, especially amid heightened security concerns in the region.

Bengal pilgrim found dead near Gauri Kund
Shimla: A pilgrim from North 24-Parganas has been found dead near Gauri Kund in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district. Police identified the deceased as Dukhi Ram Sarkar (38), a resident of south Dum Dum. He was last seen near the peak of Kinnaur Kailash, at an altitude of 4,800 metres. Sarkar went missing on August 7. His disappearance triggered an intensive search along the treacherous trekking route. A quick reaction team eventually recovered the body at Gauri Kund on Friday. The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra began on July 15 and will conclude on August 30. So far this year, three pilgrims have died during the pilgrimage, while more than 1,100 stranded participants have been rescued by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and district police. Each day, 350 pilgrims are allowed to undertake the Yatra. MHA says more facial recognition CCTVs to be installed in Delhi
New Delhi Security is being strengthened in the run-up to Independence Day. (Representative photo) Select parts of Delhi will be covered with facial recognition-enabled closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras as part of the ministry of home affairs' 'Safe City Project', the ministry said in a written response in Rajya Sabha to a question by Trinamool Congress (TMC) Parliamentarian Saket Gokhale. It stated that the project aims to enhance urban security and surveillance infrastructure, including the establishment of an Integrated Command, Control, Communication & Computer Centre (C4I). The 'Safe City Project', funded by the Centre, aims to ensure technology-enabled enhanced policing and better security, especially for women, and costs around ₹798 crore, officials associated with the programme said. This involves the setting up of command and control centres, with facilities for video analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and facial recognition. The ministry stated that the facial recognition system will be used to monitor 'suspected persons/criminals', and that its operation is governed by Standing Order No. Tech. & PI/04/2022, issued by Delhi Police on June 9, 2022. In August 2024, Delhi Police procured 700 facial recognition CCTV cameras to ensure robust security arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations in the city. These cameras were installed in and around the north and central districts, especially covering the Red Fort, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his Independence Day speech, to monitor VVIP movement and keep a close eye on suspicious activities. Delhi Police officers said that presently, there are nearly 25,000 CCTV cameras installed by them under various schemes, including the Safe City Project, besides installations by other agencies, such as Indian Railways and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The city police's C4I has a facial recognition software (FRS) database of around 350,000 criminals with facial details. 'The 10,000 CCTV cameras that we will be installing under the Safe City Project will all be dynamic cameras on which the FRS can be run. Even now, we have the FRS software in our C4I through which live feed of normal CCTV cameras can also be used for identification of the suspect,' a senior police officer with the modernisation unit of the city police said. The Delhi Police has recently issued directions to commercial establishments in Aerocity, including hotels, guest houses, restaurants and petrol pumps, to install a 'sufficient number' of CCTV cameras covering a 50-metre radius outside their premises to bolster surveillance and enhance public safety ahead of Independence Day. The CCTV footage must be stored for a minimum of 90 days, officials said. 'The FRS helps us in identifying and locating high-value targets and criminals who are wanted by the law enforcement agencies or those looking for a safe haven,' said special commissioner of police (operations and modernisation) Manish Kumar Agarwal. The directive, which remains in force until September 2, aims to prevent crimes and strengthen monitoring in high-profile areas near the IGI Airport, which clocks heavy tourist footfall. A senior Delhi Police officer said that all establishments in and around the Aerocity have been asked to ensure their CCTV systems are in working order, and report any malfunction immediately to the nearest police station.

Server issues lead to major delays in registration
Adilabad: A wave of concern has swept through absentee teachers in the district. The Education Department is cracking down on teachers who skip school and neglect classroom duties. Following complaints about irregular attendance and poor time management in government schools, the department has introduced Facial Recognition Attendance (FRS) to enforce discipline. However, technical glitches have caused a hinderance in the app's implementation. Officials stated that teachers were given a week to complete registration. However, server issues in some schools have caused delays. Some teachers were on leave, and 141 teachers in Adilabad district received transfer orders, requiring them to join new schools. These transitions also disrupted the registration process. Out of 691 schools in the district, on the first day (Friday), 3,283 teachers were expected to mark attendance, but only 2,028 successfully installed the app and logged in. On the second day (Saturday), approximately 60% of teachers recorded their attendance via facial recognition, according to Education Department sources. Previously, teachers operated on their own terms. Now, under strict directives from the State Education Department, Adilabad district has launched the facial attendance system to ensure punctuality and mandatory presence. A dedicated app has been rolled out, allowing both office staff and schoolteachers to log attendance online using facial recognition. Teachers must download the TG SRC app on their mobile phones and mark attendance upon arriving at school. Both teaching and non-teaching staff in government schools are now required to use the app. Attendance is recorded at 9:00 am and 4:15 pm daily. If a teacher is on leave, they must update the app accordingly. If they fail to attend without prior notice, the app automatically marks them absent. This system was introduced in response to allegations that some teachers were habitually absent, especially in remote villages, and were engaged in other activities during school hours. The online attendance system aims to eliminate such practices and ensure accountability. Just like the FRS system used for students, the teacher attendance app is linked to the District Education Office and Directorate, allowing for real-time monitoring. DEOs and Collectors can now oversee attendance directly.
