Russia Launches Major Strike on Kyiv Amid Largest POW Exchange with Ukraine
Missile and drone barrage injures civilians as prisoner swap efforts continue
A large-scale Russian missile and drone assault struck Ukraine's capital Kyiv early Saturday, injuring at least 15 civilians, even as Russia and Ukraine carried out the most extensive prisoner exchange since the war began in 2022.
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched 14 ballistic missiles and 250 Shahed-type attack drones overnight, with six missiles and 245 drones successfully intercepted. Kyiv was the primary target, officials said, as debris and fires were reported across multiple districts of the city.
Civilians Caught in Crossfire
Kyiv city authorities confirmed that 15 people were injured, while additional casualties were reported in other regions. Five civilians were killed in Russian strikes on the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions.
Explosions were heard throughout the night by AFP correspondents in Kyiv, signaling the intensity of the latest Russian barrage.
Zelensky Blames Moscow for Prolonging War
In a post on social platform X (formerly Twitter), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, stating:
'With each such attack, the world becomes more certain that the cause of prolonging the war lies in Moscow.'
He further urged the international community to impose more sanctions targeting key sectors of the Russian economy, arguing this is the only way to push Moscow toward ending the war.
Russia Also Reports Drone Attacks
While Kyiv faced the brunt of the strike, Russia's defence ministry claimed that Ukraine launched 788 drones and missiles into Russian territory since Tuesday. Many of the drones were reportedly aimed at Moscow, with dozens being shot down in recent days.
Prisoner Exchange: A Ray of Diplomacy
Despite the escalating violence, both nations have proceeded with a significant prisoner of war (POW) exchange, mediated through talks in Istanbul last week.
On Saturday, 307 POWs were exchanged on each side via Belarus, a key Russian ally. Russia stated its returning soldiers would receive medical and psychological support in Belarus before returning home.
This follows the first phase of the swap on Friday, where 390 individuals were exchanged. In total, both sides are expected to exchange 1,000 prisoners each.
'We expect the exchange to continue tomorrow,' said President Zelensky.
Peace Proposal Hinted but Details Omitted
Following the exchange, Moscow signaled it would send Ukraine its terms for a potential peace settlement, though it has yet to disclose the content of the proposal.
The parallel escalation in hostilities and diplomacy underscores the complex and volatile nature of the ongoing conflict, now in its third year, with no clear end in sight.

Trump may get rid of his Tesla after Musk row: official
Trump may get rid of his Tesla after Musk row: official Washington, United States Donald Trump may now offload a Tesla he said he bought earlier this year in a show of support for Elon Musk, a White House official said yesterday, following a blazing row between the US president and his billionaire former advisor. The red electric vehicle, which retails for around $80,000, was still in a parking lot on the White House grounds on Friday, an AFP reporter said, a day after the very public meltdown between Trump and the South African-born tech tycoon. "He's thinking about it, yes," a senior White House official told AFP when asked if the Republican would sell or give away the Tesla. Tesla stocks had tanked more than 14 percent on Thursday amid the row, losing some $100 billion of the company's market value, but leapt back in early trading Friday. Trump, who does not drive as a president, said he was buying the Tesla in March to boost support for his mega-donor, whose brand -- and bottom line -- has been hit hard by public outrage over his role in slashing US government jobs. At a choreographed publicity stunt that turned the White House into a pop-up Tesla showroom, Trump praised the EV as a "great product" and lashed out on social media at "Radical Left" attacks against the world's richest person and his company. Trump's Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and another senior aide posed in the car as recently as last week, in a photograph posted on Musk's social media network X. "Taking President Trump's Tesla out for a ride," Trump's communications advisor Margo Martin posted. But the shiny red vehicle has now become an awkward symbol of the fiery political divorce between Trump, 78, and former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Musk, 53. Trump said he was "very disappointed" by Musk and threatened to end his government contracts after his ex-aide criticized the president's flagship budget and policy mega-bill as an "abomination."

Russia Launches Deadly Barrage on Kyiv Following Deep-Strike Drone Attacks
Russia unleashed a wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital in the early hours of Friday, killing at least six people and sending powerful shockwaves across the country, according to Ukrainian officials. The pre-dawn assault, described as one of the most intense in recent months, lit up the Kyiv skyline with a series of loud explosions as air raid sirens blared across the city. Emergency crews scrambled through the rubble in multiple districts as authorities confirmed casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. The strikes come in the wake of a dramatic escalation in cross-border hostilities, triggered by recent Ukrainian drone attacks that reportedly destroyed several Russian strategic bombers stationed deep inside Russian territory. In a pointed response, Russian President Vladimir Putin, through messages relayed via former U.S. President Donald Trump, warned of severe retaliation — a warning that now appears to have materialized. 'This was a calculated and devastating response,' said a senior Ukrainian military official. 'It underscores the growing risks of escalation as Ukrainian forces continue to take the fight closer to the Russian heartland.' Ukraine's air defense systems managed to intercept a number of incoming threats, but officials admitted that several drones and missiles slipped through, striking both residential and strategic areas.

Kremlin: No 'Negotiations With Terrorists' - We'll Retaliate At 'A Time Of Our Choosing'
Russia says that President Putin is preparing to retaliate at 'a time of our choosing' for all the latest drone and 'terror attacks' – including the targeting of trains and bridges with explosives. 'Russia will respond to Ukraine's latest attacks as and when its military sees fit,' the Kremlin said Thursday. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed what President Trump revealed of the Putin phone call Wednesday – that the Russian leader made clear that Moscow is obliged to retaliate. Peskov, speaking of Putin's first televised address since the devastating Sunday drone attacks deep inside Russian territory said, 'The president described the Kyiv regime as a terrorist regime, because it was the regime's leadership that consciously gave the order, the command, the order to blow up a passenger train.' 'This is nothing other than terrorism at the state level. This is an important statement by the president,' he added. Putin had accused Ukraine's leadership of orchestrating a terrorist attack on trains carrying civilians in Russia's Bryansk region, which left seven dead and dozens injured in the derailment of the train and collapse of the bridge due to planted explosives on Sunday. The operation appeared in parallel to the 'Operation Spinder's Web' drone attacks. Putin asserted that Ukrainian political leadership was directly behind the strike. 🚨 BREAKING: Putin accuses Ukraine's leadership of orchestrating a terrorist attack on trains carrying civilians in Russia's Bryansk claims the Ukrainian political leadership is directly behind the strike. — Defence Index (@Defence_Index) June 4, 2025 He also made clear in the address that Ukraine's offer of a summit with Zelensky and an immediate ceasefire has been rejected. It marked a clear rhetorical escalation when compared to prior comments when he said: 'Who has negotiations with terrorists?' Click here to read more… Source Zero Hedge
