$1 million Scratchers lottery ticket purchased in San Jose
(KRON) — A grandfather running errands in the South Bay picked up a juicy surprise that wasn't on his grocery list. Jess Daniels took home a Scratchers ticket worth $1 million, the California Lottery announced Friday.
Daniels stopped by Gateway Food & Liquor in San Jose to take a break from errands when he purchased two '$100 Million Mega Cash' Scratchers tickets. After driving home and digging into some food with his granddaughter, the two decided to get the tickets out and start scratching.
South Bay city named nation's richest retirement town: report
For many, the first ticket he scratched was already good enough as a winner, returning Daniels $20, which would cover the cost of the two $10 tickets. He then moved onto the second ticket as his granddaughter carefully watched.
After scratching all of the winning numbers at the top of the ticket, he began to work down the rows.
'First row—43? Nope. 27? Nope. 16? Nope,' Daniels explained to the California Lottery. In the next row, he uncovered number 19.
'I've got number 19!' Daniels continued.
Scratching out '$1,000…' as he moved along the space, Daniels recalled when he once won $1,000 and thought he may have won another grand. Then the zeros kept coming.
'Oh my God, Grandpa! Oh my God!' Daniels' granddaughter exclaimed as the numbers were being revealed.
Daniels realized he had just won $1 million.
The number 19 that brought Daniels a fortune was a theme throughout the lottery win, he told the lottery.
'It was December 19th, the winning number was number 19, and the matching number was also 19,' Daniels said. 'When I filled out the paperwork, it required a 19-digit number, and on the 19th of February, I received my check.'
Needless to say, 19 is now his favorite number.
Daniels isn't the only person in the Bay Area recently reaping lottery wins. On Wednesday, a SuperLotto Plus player in Cotati won the $30 million jackpot.

$1.4 million Powerball ticket is about to expire. CA player has days to claim it
A Powerball player in California only has days to claim a near $1.4 million prize. The ticket is set to expire Monday, June 16, the California Lottery said in a June 12 news release. Someone bought the winning ticket for the Dec. 18 drawing, and they matched five out of six numbers, McClatchy News reported from lottery officials. The winning numbers were 6, 15, 18, 33, 49, with a Powerball of 7, the lottery said. The Power Play was 2x. The ticket was sold at an ARCO gas station at 4224 Marconi Ave. in Arden-Arcade. If no one claims the $1,391,550 prize, lottery officials said the money will be given to schools in California. Lottery players have 180 days from the draw date to claim their prize. Arden-Arcade is in the Sacramento area. What to know about Powerball To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Powerball player wins big in California. Where was the lucky ticket sold?
A Powerball player in California won $427,953, just missing the $54 million jackpot, lottery officials say. The ticket matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball in the drawing Monday, June 9, the California Lottery said. The lucky ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Alhambra, which is about a 10-mile drive northeast from downtown Los Angeles, lottery officials said. California adjusts lottery prizes based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners. Nobody won the grand prize, which rises to an estimated $65 million, with a cash value of about $29.2 million, for the next drawing Wednesday, June 11, the national Powerball site said. The winning numbers were 30, 33, 40, 43 and 52, with a Powerball of 25. The Power Play multiplier was 4x. More than 240,000 other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $200,000, the lottery said. The Powerball jackpot was last won May 31, when a California player hit the $204.5 million grand prize. What to know about Powerball To score a jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state. Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online. Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
