Firbromat bags RM283.5mil subcontract for CSR project in Kelantan

KUALA LUMPUR: Fibromat (M) Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, MTS Fibromat (M) Sdn Bhd, has secured a RM283.5 million subcontract for the execution and completion of geotechnical and erosion control works for the Central Spine Road (CSR) project in Kelantan.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the company said the project under CSR Package 2 and Section 2A entails the geotechnical services and infrastructure-related works for road construction from Sungai Lakit Bridge to Gua Musang and Sungai Lakit Bridge to Paloh 2.
MTS Fibromat has accepted the Letter of Award from Casa Hartamas Sdn Bhd. The 24-month contract will commence from May 15, 2025 to May 15, 2027.
MTS Fibromat will act as a subcontractor to Casa Hartamas, which was appointed by the main contractor, Core Value Sdn Bhd. The ultimate project owner is the Public Works Department of Malaysia.
Fibromat managing director and chief executive officer Danny Ng Kian Boon said the project marks a significant milestone for the company as it represents its first foray into infrastructure construction services, particularly through participation in a portion of the CSR project.
"It presents an excellent opportunity for us to expand our capabilities and diversify our portfolio beyond our core expertise.
"In accordance with the JKR Works Schedule, our scope of work includes, but is not limited to, demolition and site clearance, earthworks, drainage works, pavement works, road furniture, environmental protection works, geotechnical components, and supporting structural works," he said.
Ng said the venture supports the company's strategic goal of gradually establishing a presence in infrastructure development to become a turnkey service provider in Malaysia.
The project is expected to contribute positively to Fibromat's financial performance over the next two to three years, beginning May 15, 2025.
With the inclusion of this new project, Fibromat's outstanding order book now stands at about RM317.8 million as at May 15, 2025. The company remains confident that its focus on high-impact projects will continue to drive positive financial results.

Surge in foreign tourists visiting S'gor in lead-up to VSY 2025

From left: Amirudin and Ng visiting a booth at the Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025. SELANGOR is experiencing a shift in its tourism landscape as international visitors begin to form a larger part of the state's tourist arrivals. According to state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the ratio of international to domestic tourists was previously 30:70. 'But by 2024, we successfully broke that pattern. 'Now, international tourists make up a larger share of visitors. 'This a positive sign for Selangor's growing global appeal,' he said. Ng said that while the momentum was encouraging, Sekinchan faced one major hurdle – the lack of four-star hotels for the rising number of higher-spending tourists. He was speaking to reporters at Sekinchan Padi Field Festival 2025 in the Sabak Bernam district. The state government had aimed to draw some 13,000 visitors to the two-day event. Held at Terminal Sekinchan, the festival was the first of its kind in Malaysia and had been held in support of Visit Selangor Year (VSY) 2025. (From left) Saipolyazan, Ng and Chua answering media queries at the festival. 'This festival was created to let visitors enjoy the beauty of agro-tourism in northern Selangor, a region that produces the most rice in Malaysia and is rich in natural beauty that you can't find in modern cities,' said Ng. The festival was launched by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Held from 7am to 7pm over two days, it featured a variety of family-friendly and cultural activities. Among first day highlights were electric tram and rickshaw tours through padi fields, a food festival, traditional kite (wau kapal) demonstrations, a mini kite decoration competition and a live performance by Malaysian singer-songwriter Aizat Amdan. The second day offered even more attractions, which included a padi field run, free health screenings and environmental volunteer activities. The festival was part of the VSY2025 campaign that aimed to draw 8 million visitors and generate RM11.7bil in tourism- related transactions. To support these goals, the Selangor Budget 2025 has allocated RM8mil for VSY2025 preparations. These include programming and upgrading tourism facilities across all nine districts. In the works are over 100 programmes and initiatives covering educational tourism, sports, food and beverage, arts, culture and heritage. Also present during the festival press conference were Menteri Besar Incorporated chief executive officer Saipolyazan M. Yusop and Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling.

Samenta heartened by Inland Revenue Board's latest measures on e-invoicing

PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) decision to exempt micro enterprises from e-invoicing and to give small and medium enterprises more time to comply with the mandate is a positive step that will help ease the current difficulties faced by businesses in the country. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) stated that IRB's exemptions are not only timely but also reflect an understanding of the real challenges faced by small businesses on the ground. 'We have provided input on both issues, and we are grateful that the government has shown genuine care and support for our most vulnerable enterprises,' Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said. 'We are especially heartened by the government's decisive move to permanently exempt businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually from the e-invoicing mandate. 'This exemption spares our smallest traders, hawkers and family-run shops, many operating without digital infrastructure, from compliance burdens that could have forced them to shut down or operate informally,' he added. Ng said the postponement of e-invoicing requirements until Jan 1, 2026, for businesses earning below RM5 million a year provides SMEs with much-needed time to prepare, strengthen their skills and adjust to new demands. This flexibility is essential for SMEs to survive and grow in today's changing economic environment, he added. On Thursday, IRB announced that the e-invoicing implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million is postponed to Jan 1, 2026, while those below RM500,000 are exempted, and the deadline for those up to RM1 million is extended to July 1, 2026. The board also set a new e-invoicing implementation timeline: Phase 3 for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM5 million and RM25 million starts on July 1, 2025; Phase 4 for those earning RM1 million to RM5 million begins on Jan 1, 2026; and Phase 5 for taxpayers with income up to RM1 million will commence on July 1, 2026. On the government's decision to postpone the permit requirement for the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas, Ng said: 'In response to the concerns of our street-level food operators, the temporary waiver of liquefied petroleum gas permit requirements will go a long way in safeguarding the daily livelihoods of thousands of families and small traders. It may be a small administrative change, but it carries significant implications for business continuity and the cost of living.' Without these timely measures, he said, Malaysia could have faced the potential collapse of thousands of small businesses, particularly those in the micro and informal sectors. Ng pointed out that the government's proactive stance has averted what could have become a national micro-business crisis. 'More importantly, these decisions send a clear message that the government sees SMEs as a central pillar of our economy and is responsive and willing to amend policies based on feedback from the ground,' he said, adding that Malaysia is a country where small businesses are treated with respect and understanding.

JAG not deterred by plunging into the red, views its 1Q FY2025 setback as 'temporary, one-off impact'

A SLOWDOWN in demand from international clients following uncertainty surrounding the US tariff policy announced in early April has taken a toll on JAG Bhd's financial performance for its 1Q FY2025 ended March 31, 2025. For the quarter under review, the ACE Market-listed total waste management company incurred a net loss of -RM6.43 mil from a net profit of RM3.01 mil in the same period last year. Its revenue dwindled 12% year-on-year (yoy) to RM46.47 mil (1Q FY2024: RM52.75 mil). Amid the lack of clarity, customers took a more cautious approach to procurement which resulted in delayed orders during the period, according to JAG's executive director Datuk Ng Meow Giak. Nevertheless, the group views this as a temporary, one-off impact given market sentiment is already showing signs of stabilisation with semiconductor clients resuming typical procurement patterns. 'While 1Q FY2025 was impacted by external headwinds, we remain confident in our ability to deliver a strong rebound,' opined Ng. 'Management guidance for FY2025 remains strong and intact, and we expect the remaining quarters of the year to return to profitability. 'The long-term outlook for the industries we serve, particularly semiconductors and electronics, remain robust. We are focused on building the operational resilience and business agility needed to fully capitalise on these opportunities.' As it is, JAG's Total Waste Management (TWM) segment has continued to show strength and agility. 'We are broadening our revenue streams within TWM, including entry into the oil & gas (O&G) space and tapping into specialised services such as the disposal of scheduled waste, an area that requires licensed handling and technical expertise,' projected Ng. The TWM segment remains the group's primary growth engine. In addition to streamlining operations and refocusing on high-value activities, JAG is enhancing productivity through processing efficiencies, expansion of service scope and diversification into industries with long-term potential. 'As we enter this next phase of growth, we are also taking steps to enhance shareholder value,' envisages Ng. 'Given the strong fundamentals of our core business and the growth trajectory ahead, we are in the process of formalising a dividend policy. This reflects our confidence in the group's performance outlook and our commitment to delivering long-term value to our shareholders.' At the close of today's (June 4) market trading, JAG was up 1 sen or 4.44% to 23.5 sen with 3.17 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM 177 mil. – June 4, 2025
