Firbromat bags RM283.5mil subcontract for CSR project in Kelantan

KUALA LUMPUR: Fibromat (M) Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, MTS Fibromat (M) Sdn Bhd, has secured a RM283.5 million subcontract for the execution and completion of geotechnical and erosion control works for the Central Spine Road (CSR) project in Kelantan.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the company said the project under CSR Package 2 and Section 2A entails the geotechnical services and infrastructure-related works for road construction from Sungai Lakit Bridge to Gua Musang and Sungai Lakit Bridge to Paloh 2.
MTS Fibromat has accepted the Letter of Award from Casa Hartamas Sdn Bhd. The 24-month contract will commence from May 15, 2025 to May 15, 2027.
MTS Fibromat will act as a subcontractor to Casa Hartamas, which was appointed by the main contractor, Core Value Sdn Bhd. The ultimate project owner is the Public Works Department of Malaysia.
Fibromat managing director and chief executive officer Danny Ng Kian Boon said the project marks a significant milestone for the company as it represents its first foray into infrastructure construction services, particularly through participation in a portion of the CSR project.
"It presents an excellent opportunity for us to expand our capabilities and diversify our portfolio beyond our core expertise.
"In accordance with the JKR Works Schedule, our scope of work includes, but is not limited to, demolition and site clearance, earthworks, drainage works, pavement works, road furniture, environmental protection works, geotechnical components, and supporting structural works," he said.
Ng said the venture supports the company's strategic goal of gradually establishing a presence in infrastructure development to become a turnkey service provider in Malaysia.
The project is expected to contribute positively to Fibromat's financial performance over the next two to three years, beginning May 15, 2025.
With the inclusion of this new project, Fibromat's outstanding order book now stands at about RM317.8 million as at May 15, 2025. The company remains confident that its focus on high-impact projects will continue to drive positive financial results.

George Kent slips into red in Q1

KUALA LUMPUR: George Kent (Malaysia) Bhd posted a net loss of RM8.01 million for the first quarter ended June 30, 2025 (1QFY26), dragged by foreign exchange losses and higher operating costs. The company registered a revenue of RM37.6 million for the quarter, a 24 per cent increase from RM30.3 million a year ago, supported by stronger performances in both its engineering and metering divisions. George Kent said its metering division contributed RM32 million revenue, up 9.9 per cent from RM29.1 million previously, while the engineering division delivered RM5.65 million compared with RM1.16 million in the corresponding quarter last year. George Kent said it remains focused on executing its strategic priorities, including market diversification and the adoption of technology through its subsidiary GK SuperTech Sdn Bhd. It added that demand for its metering solutions continues to provide a stable base for the group, while it selectively pursues opportunities in infrastructure projects. Executive chairman Tan Sri Tan Kay Hock said a key highlight for the quarter was the group's strategic collaboration with Qingdao Topscomm Communication Co Ltd to develop Malaysia's first branded ultrasonic water meter. He added that the innovation will deliver highly accurate automated meter reading, help reduce non-revenue water and bring artificial intelligence-driven water management efficiencies to the market.

Avangaad anchors 2Q FY2025 growth on long-term contracts; charter fleet at sustained high utilisation

MAIN Market-listed Avangaad Bhd [formerly E.A. Technique (M) Bhd] has locked in significant multi-year charter wins in its Marine Service Vessels Group (fast crew boats and tugboats) as evident in its 2Q FY2025 financial results ended June 30, 2025. Now a marine COP (coordinator, operator and partner) player, the group raked in RM66.8 mil of contracts from Northport (M) Bhd in addition to other multi-year fast crew boat (FCB) charters. Aside from having secured near-term revenues, Avangaad has also expanded its long-term service footprint across Malaysia's key ports. For its 2Q FY2025, Avangaad posted a 5.4% % revenue growth to RM32,.27 mil (2Q FY2024: RM30.6 mil) while its 1H FY2025 revenue was flat at RM62.25 mil (1H FY2024: RM 61.81 mil) on the back of higher vessel utilisation and improved charter rates for fast crew boat contracts. Apart from new contracts totalling RM66.8 mil, the group has secured three fast crew boat (FCB) contracts worth RM29.2 mil during the six-month period. These include a two-year extension for three existing harbour tugboats and a new five-year daily charter for three harbour tugboats. The solid pipeline reflects the group's proactive approach and proven capability in securing earning opportunities. Its disciplined strategy ensures cash flow visibility and underpins growth certainty. Lucrative order book Looking ahead, Avangaad's management is executing a three-phase growth plan to demonstrate its prioritisation in delivering operational efficiencies, cost management and selective contract wins to reinforce the group's strategic presence as a trusted partner in both the oil & gas (O&G) and non-O&G segments. 'Currently in Phase 1, we're focusing on fortifying our position through new and renewed contracts alongside increased fleet utilisation while tightening cost management to maintain uncompromised operational efficiency,' revealed Avangaad's executive director Datuk Wira Mubarak Hussain Akhtar Husin. 'As we move into Phase 2 which is already in progress, we're set to expand and diversify by growing our fleet size and asset types, deepening port presence across Malaysia, and maintaining balanced earnings mix across O&G, non-O&G and marine logistics.' Added Mubarak: 'Moving forward, we shall regionalise and modernise under Phase 3 by entering selected ASEAN markets through both existing and new strategic partnerships. 'We also anticipate growth through fleet modernisation. This positions Avangaad as a key industry player in leading the transformation of marine sector, delivering integrated and sustainable solutions while advancing a clear decarbonisation transition plan.' Thus far, a record RM437.7 mil order book (firm order: RM177.6 mil, optional contract extensions: RM260.1 mil) underscores the confidence clients place in the group's role as the Marine COP backed by its unique 4Ps business model of 'Port, People, Product, Platform'. 'With a blend of renewals and new long-term agreements across both O&G and non-O&G sectors, Avangaad is building earnings visibility, cash flow stability and a clear pathway for sustainable growth in the marine logistics industry,' added Mubarak. At the close of today's (Aug 19) market trading, Avangaad was unchanged at 29 sen with 3.61 million shares traded, thus valuing the company at RM385 mil. – Aug 19, 2025

SAM Engineering 1Q net profit jumps 60% to RM16.2mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Sam Engineering & Equipment (M) Bhd, which posted a 60% jump in net profit for the first quarter ended June 30 (1Q25), remains cautiously optimistic on the long-term outlook for its aerospace and semiconductor equipment segments. In 1Q25, SAM Engineering recorded a net profit of RM16.2mil, up 60.3% from RM10.1mil a year earlier. Earnings per share rose to 2.39 sen from 1.49 sen previously. Quarterly revenue rose 10.8% to RM369.6mil compared with RM333.4mil a year prior. SAM Engineering, which makes production equipment and aerospace products, said in July that Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) projected global semiconductor equipment sales to hit a record US$125.5bil in 2025 on AI-related investments and fab expansions. Wafer Fab Equipment (WFE) sales are projected to grow 6.2% to US$110.8bil in 2025, driven mainly by advanced logic (3nm and below) and EUV/High-NA lithography. Global integrated circuit (IC) inventory is expected to increase 2.5% quarter-on-quarter to US$69.5bil in 3Q25. Meanwhile, fab utilisation rates are projected to hold flat at 68% during the same period. It said these trends suggest that the industry is still operating below optimal levels, indicating a slower path to recovery in the short term.
