The telltale signs a tourist is American, according to Europeans

It's not just the accent.
As European travel experts reveal, American tourists give themselves away with a number of traits while in the UK and Europe.
For starters, they have a certain dress sense and a distinctive volume when speaking.
They also navigate cities in a way that can leave locals disgruntled, fail to get to grips with the tipping culture, and sit down to eat at the wrong hour.
But it's not all negative. American visitors to Europe have several endearing ways leading them to be welcomed with open arms by some.
Heard before being seen
Locals in Europe are likely to hear Americans before setting eyes on them.
Travel expert Jiayi Wang, from London, a professional photographer and Founder of The Diary Of A Nomad blog site, told The Independent: "[Americans'] conversations carry across a tram or café, full of enthusiasm. Locals tend to keep public chatter lower, so that livelier pitch draws attention straightaway."
Fellow Londoner Lucinda Faucheux, Co-Founder of Travel Support Circle, agreed, noting: "Americans tend to speak much louder than locals, even when they're just having a casual conversation.
"In a quiet English pub or a small village café, a group of Americans chatting can unintentionally dominate the space. It's not meant rudely, but the contrast is obvious."
Chatting up a storm
Europeans notice that Americans aren't just louder, but generally more talkative.
Swede Albin Eriksson Lippe, CEO of travel-tech company Holiwise, told The Independent: "It is not uncommon to find an American tourist joining a conversation with strangers after overhearing something they've said, or offering effusive praise of the place they're in."
Nico Trinkhaus, an award-winning travel photographer from Germany known for his vivid images of European cities and landscapes, added: "In my experience as a European travel photographer, Americans are some of the most open and approachable travelers I meet.
"It's not unusual for them to strike up small talk in places where most Europeans stay silent — like waiting for an elevator or watching a sunset.
"If someone approaches me while I take photos and they speak English instead of the local language, they are almost always American. And they tend to be wonderfully direct when asking for recommendations, whether it's the best restaurant in town or the best angle for a photo."
College logos and sports jerseys are de rigeur
Americans, Europeans notice, prioritize comfort over fashion while traveling. And they don't seem to care about big logos.
Jiayi said: "Comfort comes first. So you notice bright sneakers, cargo shorts, and T-shirts stamped with college logos or sports teams.
"In cities where most people lean toward neutral tones and fitted cuts, that splash of branding makes the wearer stand out the minute they step into a piazza."
A back-to-front look
The way Americans carry their backpacks will look back-to-front to many Europeans.
LP Maurice, the CEO of Busbud and someone who's spent 20 years traveling around Europe, said: "Many Americans favor a soft-sided backpack the size of an airline carry-on, worn on the front in crowded metro cars for security. A refillable 700ml drink tumbler often dangles from a carabiner.
"Local commuters carry smaller daypacks or string bags and pick up water only when they need it."
Tech forward
Americans, note European travel experts, are often glued to their Apple Watches.
LP Maurice said: "If you notice an Apple Watch pinging every few minutes because mobile data is still roaming, you are very likely listening to an American checking sports scores back home."
Walk this way
Sarah Topalian Davies, director of communications & media at Earthday.org and a Brit living in America, recently returned from vacation in Rome.
She had a few things to say about how Americans get around.
She told The Independent: "American tourists seem to have no sense of other people, spatially. They aren't rude, but they just don't understand that while they are on a five-day whistle-stop tour of Europe, many other folks around them might live here and are trying to go to work.
"The slow walking and dawdling are deeply annoying to everyone. They also stroll two or three across on a busy street and seem oblivious to everyone else, including yelling policemen.
"This gets worse when they are in gangs of fellow tourists on official 'sight-seeing tours' — they just forget all reason and block streets and roads to desperately stay in their 'group'. I get that they are probably a bit nervous, but it causes log jams and it's always American groups that do it, desperately following the flag their tourist guide is manically waving."
The price is right
Americans value knowing the worth of tourist treasures.
Davies said: "Americans ask the fiscal value of everything rather a lot. For example, I was in the Vatican and a young American man trying to impress his girlfriend, I think by looking engaged, kept asking, 'What is that worth?' That is such an American trait.
"We are in the Vatican; it was painted by Michelangelo. You can't buy it. So, who cares?"
Tourist trapped
Americans don't often stray beyond the main thoroughfares to find neighborhood eats.
'They seem nervous to eat where the locals eat, so they mainly seem to stick to the places near all the big tourist traps where all the other Americans are eating. And then get ripped off, which is a shame,' Davies added.
Food for thought
Dinnertime for Americans is when chefs in Europe are just beginning prep work.
Jiayi said: "Americans like to sit down for dinner around 6pm, while European kitchens are still prepping for the night. They are quick to ask for tap water packed with ice, request menu tweaks like 'no cheese', and look puzzled when refills cost extra. Staff learn to spot the pattern after a single order."
Plastic fantastic
Plastic is the go-to method of payment for Americans.
Jiayi said: "They reach instinctively for a credit card no matter how small the charge. If the café is cash only, the surprise on their faces says more than any accent could.'
Tips, tips and more tips
Waiting staff in Europe can look forward to huge tips for doing nothing extra.
Sarah said: "If you are a waiter and you get a huge tip for no extra discernible level of elevated service, it was 99 percent an American who tipped you — as they are unbelievably generous with tips. Twenty percent is not unusual and they expect to do it. Plus, American tourists will love everything you give them and are very unlikely to complain."
Back to your roots
Americans love to talk about their heritage.
Sarah said: "If you hear someone claiming to be originally from that very location you are visiting — it is 100 percent an American. Everyone is Irish American, Italian American, German American. Nobody is just plain old, American, American.'
Fast and furious
The vacation passes by in a blur for Americans.
Jiayi said: "Their sightseeing style completes the picture. Cameras with large lenses, GoPros, and selfie sticks hang from straps as they hurry from one landmark to the next.
'The plan is to see as much as possible and record every minute, so the pace feels more like a race than a ramble.
'Locals strolling past with nothing but a phone notice the difference immediately."

A MUM has shared how her family ditched the UK to live in Spain four years ago and will 'never be bored' of her new life. Jodie Marlow, who shares clips of her new sunny lifestyle online, shared how she doesn't miss the rainy weather at all, and spends her days enjoying the sun. 5 5 Jodie, who is a stay-at-home mum, said her two boys finish school at 1.30pm in summer and they spend afternoons playing in the pool. In a clip on her @jodiemar1ow account, which has over 1,790 likes, she said: 'Four years in & don't think I'll ever get bored of this.' She added that the weather is perfect for her, with temperatures in the top 20s or 30s every day. Jodie said: 'It's not too hot, not too cold. Like, I can wear my nice summer dresses, which I love.' When her kids are at school, she spends her time picking up fruit and veg at the local market, or going for a pamper, including laser hair surgery. She then does housework before picking up the boys and having some lunch with them. Meanwhile, weekends are spent exploring gorgeous nearby beaches and dining out in local restaurants. MOVING TO SPAIN Finally, Jodie advised people on how they can also make the move to Spain. She shared: 'If you hold a UK British passport, you can't just move to Spain like you could pre-Brexit, you do need a visa. 'The working visa you could look into getting dependent on if you've got a specialised job. I quit my job and did a complete 180 moving to Spain - beer is just $3 a pint and my life is so much better 'The self-employed visa, basically they said to us it's just impossible to get, so we didn't even try with that. 'But the digital nomad visa allows anyone that is working online, as long as you are earning a set amount of money that provides for if there's four of you for the family, you can pay for all four of you, and they set out exactly how much that would be.' Since Brexit, UK citizens, and non-EU citizens require a visa to stay longer than 90 days. 5 SOCIAL REACTION Many people were quick to chime in and comment on her new life in Spain, and praise her for making the move. One said: 'It's beautiful there, my sister moved there 26 yrs ago, no regrets.' A second added: 'I don't think you could ever get bored of that lifestyle.' Meanwhile, and a third joked: 'You sure you wouldn't rather be stuck indoors looking out at the rain?' Jodie replied: 'deffo don't miss that side of the uk.' 5 How easy is it to move abroad? Get the feel of the city with a tapas crawl in the oldest parts of town below the Plaza Mayor and around Plaza de Santa Ana, then explore the gourmet hubs in and around Ponzano and Ibiza streets. While Madrid is all about spontaneity, you do need to plan ahead and book for popular and fancier places, particularly at weekends. Murillo Café After walking miles around the Prado, this chic brasserie-style café behind the museum is the perfect place to rest your feet with a coffee – or drop in for breakfast before you start. Snacks include pizzetas with toppings such as ibérico ham or fontina cheese with mushrooms, but you might feel like settling in for a leisurely lunch of tuna tartare with chipotle mayonnaise, goat's cheese, quinoa and lentil salad or a vegetarian burger. Also good are the clams and the baby squid in its own ink. The dining rooms sprawl through the building, from the vaulted cellar to pretty tiled spaces on the upper floors. Unsurprisingly, Botín is very popular with visitors, but eating here is a quintessential Madrid experience so don't let that put you off. Ernest Hemingway fans can ask to sit at his favourite spot. Casa Ciriaco This supremely traditional bar and restaurant, a favourite of politicians, writers, bullfighters and celebrities, has been going for a century and has a rich history – which you can trace by looking at the photographs covering the walls. New owners have barely changed a thing, thank goodness, and Casa Ciriaco has lost nothing of its character. Order the delicious signature dish, gallina a la pepitoria - chicken in almond sauce – and maybe some meatballs. In summer, start with the melon gazpacho. Or just have a draught vermouth or beer in the tiled bar with some croquetas – a good option if you need to recharge your batteries after visiting the Royal Palace. Taberna La Carmencita La Carmencita, with its tiled walls and zinc bar, opened in 1854 and is one of the oldest restaurants in Madrid – once a favourite of Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Now in the hands of a dynamic restaurant group with origins in Santander, the menu mixes traditional Madrilenian dishes with specialities from the north of Spain, using a lot of organic produce. Back to index Best for walk ins Taberna La Elisa Taberna La Elisa, decorated with pretty blue and yellow tiles, dates back more than century but is now run by the talented young team behind the highly successful Triciclo restaurant nearby. Here they serve up modern versions of Spanish classics, such as rich oxtail with silky butter beans. Grab a stool or a marble table in the bar or eat in the dining room at the back. The kitchen is open all day and this is a good bet for a late lunch after visiting the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza or Reina Sofia museums. Casa Dani is easy to spot as there is usually a bit of a queue – worth joining as it moves fast. This busy bar (with tables too) is famed for making one of the best tortillas in town. Ordering a slice of the golden, gooey potato omelette is a must, but there is a lot more on offer, such as croquetas, cuttlefish, meatballs and tomato and tuna salad. La Dichosa Hidden away on a quiet street in the quietly cool Conde Duque area, local favourite La Dichosa is a laidback bar and restaurant with striking blue, black and white décor where you share plates of croquettes, grilled octopus, baby broad beans with sobrasada sausage, artisan cheeses and charcuterie. There is a changing range of interesting wines by the glass as well as the bottle and a selection of craft beers too – check out the blackboards to see what's on offer or just ask Eva or David behind the bar, who will be happy to advise you. Come here for a bargain fixed-price lunch after the Prado or Reina Sofía museums. There is plenty to choose from, with no standing on ceremony, and you may well have to wait, but the queue moves quickly. Have a big bowl of soup, aubergine fritters, a salad, roast lamb, spare ribs, meatballs – whatever you fancy basically. Nothing much has changed in the half-century it's been open – unlike the neighbourhood, which has shifted from scruffy to chichi over the years. Come for the set-price, three-course lunch, which features a choice of Spanish classics, usually including a tasty lentil or bean stew to start with and maybe hake and salad or eggs, morcilla sausage and chips for main. There are enough options for vegetarians to put a meal together. Back to index Best for fine dining La Tasquita de Enfrente It is easy to stroll straight past tiny La Tasquita de Enfrente, which is one of Madrid's best restaurants and an unlikely haven of discreet elegance on a boisterous nightlife street. Chef Juanjo López Bedmar has been at the helm for 25 years and creates different dishes every day, depending on the best produce available, drawing on the more than 300 recipes in his repertoire. It is all about clean flavours and inspired combinations here. You can choose from two tasting menus or à la carte. Book well ahead. Ramon Freixa Tradición Ramon Freixa, who had two Michelin stars at his previous Madrid restaurant, has gone back to his roots in 2025 with Tradición, where the emphasis is on the produce. While the menu features traditional Spanish dishes, everything has the exquisite, sensual touch you would expect from one of Spain's most renowned chefs. Share the turbot with pilpil sauce or the lobster with fried eggs and potatoes and you will have a big smile on your faces. The spectacular space screams special occasion – definitely one to dress up for. It's open all day from 1pm, so early dinners are no problem. Corral de la Morería With the renowned chef David García at the helm, the restaurant at this legendary flamenco venue has been awarded a Michelin star. An evening here, in the oldest and most characterful part of Madrid, is really special as it combines enjoying creative cuisine with seeing performances by the top flamenco artists in Spain. For the full Michelin experience, book one of the four tables in the gastronomic dining space. After dinner, you move to a reserved table close to the action when the show starts. Most people eat in the less formal setting of Tablao, the area around the stage. Several fixed-price menus are available, including vegan and gluten free. Back to index Best for vegetarians and vegans El Invernadero Leading chef Rodrigo de la Calle has won a Michelin star at this restaurant where the focus is on creative, plant-based cuisine but meat, fish and dairy also feature on the menu (there are four multi-course, fixed-price options). If you are vegan or have a gluten or other allergy, there is no problem here, but bear in mind that the set menu you choose must be served to everyone on the table. Not cheap, but the food is superb and you will have a truly memorable experience. Zíngara Zíngara is bohemian, fashionable and romantic – and also happens to be vegetarian (with vegan and gluten-free dishes flagged on the menu). Start with one of the legendary cocktails then try the seaweed fritters with almond alioli, the mushroom papillote with Indian spices or the sweet potato noodles with kimchi. Open for dinner only, except at weekends when the decadence begins at 1pm. Low lighting, sumptuous decor and great music create a clubby vibe. INDEPENDENT travel agency, InteleTravel, is answering questions about their business practices after The Sun's investigation shined a light on the true cost of joining their organisation to sell travel. With glamorous celebrities like Strictly's Vicky Pattison and TOWIE's Jess Wright promoting the scheme on their huge social platforms, it was revealed they could be earning over £200,000 as fans sign up to the scheme. 5 5 However, our report showed that almost 90 per cent of people don't make a single penny working as an Independent Travel Agent (ITA) - with many ending up out of pocket. Those selling travel through the Vicky's Vacay team will almost certainly have signed up with recruitment firm, PlaNet Marketing, who are a separate company to InteleTravel. Even though they are different companies, The Sun could find no way of joining InteleTravel without signing up to PlaNet Marketing and paying an initial fee of £140 and then £30 per month thereafter. Industry experts TTG, have reported that since The Sun called for clarity on how many Brits are affected negatively by joining the scheme, InteleTravel is now reviewing its partnership with the US-headquartered company that recruits agents on its behalf. In our report, we looked at how likely it is for everyday women and fans of these glamourous celebrities to earn money selling holidays to their friends and family for a small commission. Social media messaging flaunting a jet-set lifestyle and ability to 'be your own boss' is rife on platforms like Instagram. And it's not just the celebrities who are at it. Many ITAs who say they make 'big money' from selling travel are, in fact, doing so with an elaborate recreruitment downline. This means anyone they sign up to their 'team' must pay them a commission, as well as the commission to InteleTravel - an ABTA-approved travel agency - on anything they go on to sell. InteleTravel came under criticism as recruiters for the network, appear to approach people, most-often women and mums, on social media. Avoid being ripped off by car hire companies with these four top tips Subtle messaging, which some women who spoke to The Sun allege they are trained for, is used to lure new agents in by telling them a glamorous lifestyle can be achieved while on their family holiday. It's heavily implied that a huge salary can be achieved while being a full-time mum or working in another job. A recruiter told our reporter that she earned £27,000 alongside her full time job in a different sector. Tricia Handley-Hughes, InteleTravel's UK and Ireland managing director, insisted the agency's partnership with PlanNet Marketing had 'not run its course' but added: "discussions need to take place". 5 5 Senior industry agents also reacted to the story, calling it 'deeply concerning'. In a article published by trade publication, Travel Weekly, they raised concerns about InteleTravel's recruitment methods and about the impact of the story on the professional reputation of other agents in the sector. Advantage Travel Partnership chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said said: 'It's important to remember the vast majority of travel agents across the UK are highly professional and trustworthy". 'Being a travel agent is not a hobby. It should never be treated as a casual side hustle to make some extra money". While marketing consultant Steve Dunne, chief executive of Digital Drums, said such stories 'could push back the reputation of the travel agents a generation'. A number of InteleTravel agents have reacted to our report in defence of InteleTravel. They were keen to tell their followers that agents can 'just sell holidays' and do not have to sign up to be part of the business responsible for the recruitment of other agents.
