Son found mum's winning EuroMillions ticket stuffed in drawer after her death
A grieving son found his mum's winning lottery ticket days after she died.
Liam Carter, 34, was sifting through his mother's belongings after her death when he found the ticket.
It was tucked inside a folded envelope in her kitchen drawer, and on it she had scribbled: 'Sat draw – don't forget!'
Mr Carter said: 'I nearly ignored it, but something told me to check. I scanned it using the National Lottery app, and it said it was a winning ticket — but I'd have to call the lottery line.'
After ringing last Saturday, he was told his mum, who played the lottery each week, had matched five numbers and bagged just over £18,000.
'I just froze. I must've gone quiet on the phone. It didn't feel real. She never won anything big in her life — and now this,' Mr Carter, originally from Hampshire but now living in Aberdeen, said.
'She always said if she ever won, the money would be for me.
'And even though she never knew about this win, it really felt like something she left behind for me.
'Like one final gift.'
Mr Carter revealed the money will be used towards getting a deposit for a flat – something his mum always wished for him.
A spokesperson from Playcasino.com said: 'Liam's story shows that the lottery isn't just about money — it's about meaning. In this case, a forgotten ticket became something powerful and emotional.
'It's a reminder that even the smallest moments can carry the biggest impact.' More Trending
The remarkable discovery comes after a dad nearly missed out on bagging a cool £1 million when he left his winning lottery ticket in the car and forgot to check it.
Darren Burfitt, 44, from Swansea, had been reminded by friends and relatives to look after an appeal went out searching for a missing millionaire following the Euromillions draw on October 18.
He said he was made up when one of the tickets pinged as he scanned it and discovered he had won £3.60.
The dad added he 'couldn't quite believe it' when he matched the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker code.

‘Vigilantes' murdered innocent dad-of-one they thought was a paedophile
Two men murdered a dad-of-one they mistakenly thought was a paedophile. Mark Roberts and David Garland killed Michael Wheeler after they found news reports about a man – also called Michael Wheeler – who sexually abused two 13-year-old girls in 2003. Prosecuting, David Elias, KC, said Mr Wheeler, 37, from Yeovil, Somerset, was not the same person and had no convictions for child sexual offences. He was also friends with both men but owed £100 to Roberts. When Mr Wheeler disappeared, his mum was suffering from a terminal illness and passed away before she found out what happened to her son. Bristol Crown Court heard Mr Wheeler was attacked at Roberts' flat in August last year, and suffered 11 skull and facial fractures. Garland and Roberts then hid his body, and three weeks after Mr Wheeler's death, police received information he had come to serious harm. They found no proof of his being alive after 24 August 2024. One of the last sightings of him was on CCTV at a petrol station just a few hours before his death. His remains were eventually found in a derelict caravan on farmland in Yarlington on Wednesday 25 September. Detective Superintendent Lorett Spierenburg said: 'Michael Wheeler was brutally murdered by people he had considered as friends. More Trending 'He was killed over a £100 debt and because they wrongly decided he had been jailed for child sex offences in 2003, when he would have been just 16 years old. 'The defendants gave Michael no opportunity to tell them they were wrong. Instead, they took the life of a man whose last words to his ex-wife were of love for her and their daughter.' Roberts, 39, of Juniper Close, and Garland, 40, of no fixed abode, were both remanded in custody pending a sentencing hearing, expected to be Friday 13 June. Putin unleashes aerial glide bombs in 'most powerful attack of entire war'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Vladimir Putin has unleashed his 'most powerful attack of the entire war' on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Missiles and drones pounded the northeastern city, located about 19 miles from the Russian border, killing three people and injuring as many as 21. Aerial glide bombs – which fly over long distances after being released by planes – were also deployed in the attack, the latest in near daily widescale assaults by Russia. Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote at 2am on Telegram: 'Kharkiv is currently experiencing the most powerful attack in the entire time of the full-scale war. 'As of this moment, at least 40 explosions have been heard in the city in an hour and a half. More Trending 'The enemy is simultaneously striking with missiles, 'Shaheds' [drones] and guided aerial bombs.' Terekhov said 18 blocks of flats and 13 private homes were damaged in the attack. Citing preliminary data, he said Russia deployed 48 Shahed drones, two missiles and four aerial glide bombs. The intensity of the Russian attacks on Ukraine over the past weeks has further dampened hopes that the warring sides could reach a peace deal soon – especially after Ukraine recently embarrassed the Kremlin with a surprising drone attack on military airfields deep inside Russia. Retired vicar admits role in 'Eunuch Maker' extreme body modification ring
A retired vicar has admitted taking part in an extreme body modification ring run by a man calling himself the Eunuch Maker. Reverend Geoffrey Baulcomb, 79, pleaded guilty to GBH with intent after using a pair of scissors to carry out a surgical procedure on a man's penis in January 2020. He was captured in a nine-second video performing the makeshift op, which involved the enlarging the opening of a man's urethra. Baulcomb previously admitted to distributing an indecent photo of a child in March 2020 and three counts of making indecent images of children on or before December 2022. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing extreme pornographic images, amounting to 195 images. The images are linked to the self-styled 'Eunuch Maker' Marius Gustavson, who mutilated paying customers and streamed it online. Norwegian Gustavson, who had his own penis cut off, a nipple removed and his leg frozen so it had to be amputated, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 22 years. His penis was found in a drawer in his home almost four years after it had been amputated. Baulcomb was arrested in connection with the incident in December 2022. He was ordained as a priest in 1970 and worked in Chichester, West Sussex, according to the Church of England website. Judge Nigel Lickley KC granted Baulcomb conditional bail, ordering him not to attend any Church of England premises or functions and to have no contact with children under the age of 18. More Trending Prosecutor Caroline Carberry said: 'This defendant is not deemed a flight risk by the police in this case. 'He has been on bail for a really long period of time now.' The judge told the defendant the seriousness of the GBH offence meant he would receive 'a custodial sentence of some length'. Baulcomb will be sentenced at the same court on September 1.
