Boy, 10, 'beaten to death' by headmaster in front of school during assembly

A ten-year-old schoolboy was beaten to death in front of his entire school over what witnesses called a 'minor issue'. Khyalmat Khan was hit repeatedly with a rod by headmaster Waar Ahmed in a private school in northern Pakistan on Friday. During a school assembly, Khyalmat was singled out and hit on the neck, head, face and back, local police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The headmaster has been arrested, and the situation is being investigated. Khyber District Police Officer Rai Mazhar Iqbal said: 'Violence against children and women will not be tolerated under any circumstances. 'No one has the right to misuse the noble role of a teacher to commit such brutality. A teacher is a spiritual guardian, but this man has dishonoured the sanctity of the profession.' Pakistan has seen a number of violent incidents involving children, prompting a bill to be passed banning violence against children. Violence in schools has also been reported among older age groups in the country. In 2017, a mob of university students beat a fellow pupil to death after he was accused of sharing blasphemous content on social media. The group is said to have attacked Mashal Khan at the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, Pakistan, while shouting 'Allahu Akbar'. The mass communication student was allegedly stripped naked and beaten with planks until his skull caved in. More Trending Blasphemy is a highly sensitive topic in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where insulting the Prophet Mohammed is a crime that leads to prison time. In the US, eight high school students were charged with murder after a 17-year-old was beaten to death over a pair of stolen headphones in 2023. Graphic footage of the brawl was spread widely on social media and appeared to show at least 10 individuals swarming the victim. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt Jason Johansson called the footage 'very graphic, and in my opinion very void of humanity.' Russian drone attacks kill girl, 9, ahead of 'uncertain' peace talks

Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine have killed at least two, including a nine-year-old girl, as Putin continues his onslaught against the country. It came as uncertainty remained about whether Kyiv diplomats would attend a new round of peace talks proposed by Moscow for early next week in Istanbul. Russian troops launched 109 drones and five missiles across Ukraine overnight and into Saturday. Three of the missiles and 42 drones were destroyed, and another 30 drones failed to reach their targets and caused no damage.. The girl was killed in a strike on the frontline village of Dolynka in the Zaporizhzhia region, and a 16-year-old was injured, Zaporizhzhia's governor, Ivan Fedorov, said. 'One house was destroyed. The shockwave from the blast also damaged several other houses, cars, and outbuildings,' he wrote on Telegram. Another man was killed by Russian shelling in Ukraine's Kherson region, governor Oleksandr Prokudin wrote on Telegram. Russia's Ministry of Defence said on Saturday that it had gained control of the Ukrainian village of Novopil in the Donetsk region, and took the village of Vodolahy in the northern Sumy region. Ukrainian authorities in Sumy ordered mandatory evacuations in 11 more settlements as Russian forces made steady gains in the area. The new additions bring the total number of settlements under evacuation orders to 213 in Sumy, which borders Russia's Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said 50,000 Russian troops have amassed in the area to launch an offensive to carve out a buffer zone inside Ukrainian territory. Speaking on Saturday, Ukraine's top army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said Russian forces were focusing their main efforts on Pokrovsk, Torets and Lyman in the Donetsk region, as well as the Sumy border area. Mr Syrskyi also said Ukrainian forces are still holding territory in Russia's Kursk region, which Moscow has repeatedly denied. Russia said on April 26 that it had pushed all Ukrainian troops from the Kursk region after Kyiv's troops seized land there during a surprise incursion in August 2024. More Trending Elsewhere, 14 people, including four children, were injured after Ukrainian drones struck apartment buildings on Saturday in the Russian town of Rylsk and the village of Artakovo in the western Kursk region. Andrii Yermak, a senior adviser to Mr Zelensky, said on Friday that Kyiv was ready to resume direct peace talks with Russia in Istanbul on Monday – but that the Kremlin should first provide a promised memo setting out its position on ending the more than three-year war. Mr Zelensky said Russia was 'undermining diplomacy' by withholding the document: 'For some reason, the Russians are concealing this document. This is an absolutely bizarre position. There is no clarity about the format.' Moscow previously said it would share its memorandum during the talks. Body of British hiker, 36, found months after going missing in Italian Dolomites

The body of a British hiker who went missing in the Dolomites on New Year's Day has been found by mountain rescuers. Aziz Ziriat, 36, was last heard from on January 1 while hiking with a friend, Samuel Harris, in the Italian mountain range. Samuel, 35, was found dead just over a week after the pair went missing, his body covered in snow. Aziz's phone, bank card and glasses were found close to his friend's body. This morning (May 31) Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams said they have found Aziz's body, and are working to recover his remains. The friends, who both lived in London, were planning to climb a 3,000m mountain on January 1. Aziz filmed a video and shared it with family and friends on the day he disappeared, in which he said: 'Happy New Year! Woken up to some delightful sunshine, blue skies. 'There has not been a cloud in the sky since we got here, which is slightly unnerving but also quite jokes. 'I want to attack this today, get up into some of the 3,000 bits which are up yonder. 'Looking forward to a day scampering, we are not taking our packs today, for the last two days lugging up this God-forsaken valley, another day frolicking before schlepping over to the next valley.' But their families raised the alarm after they both missed their flight back to the UK on January 6. The Italian authorities began a search of the mountain, but their efforts were hampered by heavy snow and strong winds. They found Samuel's body on January 8 at the base of the Care Alto peak and suggested he may have fallen from rocks above. Rescuers traced their steps by tracking their mobile phones and managed to find both of their backpacks – but they found no trace of Aziz. Friends and family described Aziz and Samuel as experienced hikers and climbers who have faced harsh conditions before. Speaking soon after Samuel's body was found, his friend and business partner Spencer Jones paid tribute, saying: 'To say I am devastated would be an understatement, and I have no words to fully describe how I am feeling at the moment. 'The search is ongoing for our good friend Aziz Ziriat, so for now, I want to focus on Sam. 'He was an amazing friend of 23 years, ever since our school days. 'He was probably the most knowledgeable person I have ever known, and building the business with him has been an incredible journey.' ‘Beautiful' woman in her 20s stabbed to death in middle of town centre

A woman in her 20s has been stabbed to death in the middle of a London high street. Emergency services were called to Croydon town centre in south London just before 9am today. She was found unresponsive just minutes from the Centrale Shopping Centre. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been arrested on suspicion of murder. Witness Sebastian, who was one of the first to find the victim, said he 'still shaken up' over the attack. He told The Sun: 'I ran over to go and look – some people told me not to go – but it was a natural reaction. 'She seemed so young, such a beautiful young girl.' Superintendent Mitch Carr said: 'This is a tragic incident where a young woman has lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones. 'I especially want to thank the members of the public, including a teenage boy, who bravely tried to help the victim. 'We believe that this was an isolated incident, but understand that this news will shock the local community. 'Officers will remain in the area over the coming days and we would ask anyone who has concerns to speak with them.' Warning after 250,000,000 bees escape when lorry crashes

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Locals have been warned to 'avoid the area' after a lorry overturned and spilled its unusual cargo. The huge truck was transporting about 70,000lb of beehives near Lynden in Washington State when it overturned on Friday. Thankfully the truck driver was unhurt, and it's thought the trailer overturned and rolled into a ditch after the driver miscalculated a tight turn. Not only were the truck and hives damaged, but an estimated 250million bees managed to escape and are flying free in the area. Whatcom County Sheriff's Office has warned people to stay away 'due to the potential of bee escape and swarming'. They also issued a warning to anyone who is allergic to bee stings to seek advice from the state department of health's website. Emergency services were called to the scene and were joined by more than two dozen local beekeepers who volunteered to restore the hives and hopefully rescue the bees. 'The goal is to save as many of the bees as possible,' the sheriff's office said, explaining the plan is for the majority of the bees to return to their hives to find their queen in the next couple of days. The crash site is set to remain closed 'until the rescue is complete'. Whatcom County Sheriff's Office added on Friday: 'At this time, on-scene work is done. Hive boxes from the overturned truck were recovered, restored and returned to use. 'By morning, most bees should have returned to their hives and those responsible for their delivery will be in charge. 'Until the rescue is complete, and at least into Saturday, Weidkamp Road will remain closed.' While the huge cargo of bees might seem like unusual cargo, over in the US many beekeepers transport their hives around the country to help pollinate farm crops. More Trending This is because honeybees aren't native to the US, and numbers are declining quickly, with commercial beekeepers losing on average more than 60% of their colonies last winter. The US Department of Agriculture says the honeybees pollinate around $15billion (£11.1billion) worth of crops every year. Meanwhile, some only use their bees to produce honey.
