Petition presented to parliament demanding action on gang violence in northern areas

The Herald09-05-2025

Gang violence plaguing Nelson Mandela Bay's northern areas reached the national stage on Wednesday as a damning petition was presented to parliament's police portfolio committee, demanding urgent intervention to halt the bloodshed.
The petition, spearheaded by DA MPL and constituency leader Yusuf Cassim, outlined the brutal toll of gang warfare in the region and called for a multi-pronged national response.
Addressing the committee, Cassim asked for the deployment of elite detectives from across the country and the reinforcement of the Anti-Gang Unit.
He also asked for crime intelligence capabilities to be expanded and an investment to be made in surveillance technologies like drones, CCTV and ShotSpotter systems.
Senior SAPS officials, including police minister Senzo Mchunu, were present at the hearing, where Cassim detailed the grim statistics — more than 1,000 gang-related killings have been documented by Nelson Mandela Bay residents from 2019 to April 2025.
In 2024 alone, there were 244 killings, with August 2024 marking the deadliest month ever recorded.
In the 2023/2024 financial year, 148 gang-related shootings were reported — 114 in the northern areas — resulting in 62 deaths, 17 of them children.
More than 82 people were injured in the same period, including 28 children.
Between 2021 and 2023, the region suffered 361 gang-related shootings, with 319 occurring in the northern areas.
These attacks left 180 dead — including 22 children — and injured 181 more.
Attempted murder charges reached 227, the vast majority also in the northern areas.
Yet despite this grim tally, arrests remain shockingly low.
In the 2024/2025 financial year, only 19 arrests were made in 16 murder cases.
The petition also requested that the portfolio committee conduct more frequent oversight visits and engage directly with affected communities.
Committee chair Ian Cameron assured the hearing that the petition would be treated with the seriousness it demands.
In response, the committee undertook to draft a formal report containing actionable recommendations.
Once adopted, the report will be tabled in the National Assembly and carry the weight of a parliamentary resolution — binding on Mchunu to implement.
'This hearing was a milestone,' Cassim said.
'Now comes the test of follow-through.
'We will not rest until parliament's resolutions become tangible action in our communities.
'Section 12 of the constitution is clear: our people have the right to be free from all forms of violence.
'They deserve to feel safe in their own homes, on their streets, and in their schools.'

News Inspection held in Nxuba as part of inquest into deaths of activists Premium By Riaan Marais - 03 June 2025 From the hill in the suburb of Bergsig, overlooking Nxuba, state security services had an uninterrupted view of Lingelihle Township — particularly the home of political activist Matthew Goniwe. It was from that hill where they continuously monitored the movements of the Cradock Four, and in 1985 slowly formulated their sinister plans to have Goniwe and his comrades, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkhonto and Sicelo Mhlauli, eliminated...

Mkhwanazi slams doorless car cop [video]

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against a police officer who was captured on a viral video driving a doorless marked police car. The video was taken on Sunday, 1 June, as the police vehicle was involved in an accident in the Durban North policing precincts where it collided with a minibus taxi. According to the police, the driver at the time of the accident was a female Warrant Officer who was trapped inside the vehicle, and the door had to be removed to rescue her. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said without the door, although in a drivable condition, the vehicle should have been towed back to the police station. 'Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the SAPS into disrepute,' he said. Child Protection Week: Growing calls for tougher sentences for child abuse offenders

Joburg Child Welfare is calling for decisive action and tougher sentencing as Saps highlights recent life sentences for sexual offenders. JCW and other non-profit organisations marched to the Department of Justice on Sunday, 1 June. Picture: Supplied As South Africa marks Child Protection Week to raise awareness about children's rights and safety, non-profit organisation Joburg Child Welfare (JCW) has called for harsher punishments for perpetrators of child abuse. This year's theme, 'Working together in ending violence against children', urges all South Africans to unite in protecting children from harm. South Africa marks Child Protection Week from 29 May to 5 June 2025. As part of the week's activities, JCW and other non-profit organisations marched to the Department of Justice on Sunday, 1 June. Child Protection Week 'With more than 26 000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported in the 2024-25 financial year, according to the Department of Social Development, it is high time that we emphasise more comprehensive approaches to strengthen children's protective environments,' said Abubakr Hattas, CEO of JCW. The organisation said the march aimed to demand the urgent implementation of tougher penalties for child abuse offenders, particularly those involved in Schedule 6 crimes. 'We demand a justice system that not only protects, but actively deters violence against children.' JCW and other non-profit organisations marched to the Department of Justice on Sunday, 1 June. Picture: Supplied. March demanding stricter sentences for abusers The CEO said strong child protection offers a safeguard against the many risks and vulnerabilities that can lead to harm and abuse. This means backing initiatives that teach kids the importance of boundaries and respect for one another, while also educating them about their rights to safety and protection, Hattas said. 'South Africa has strong legislation and a national action plan to prevent and address violence against children, indicating urgent commitment to the protection of children's rights. However, laws and policies by themselves are insufficient; they are ineffective without enforcement,' he said. ALSO READ: Violence against children soars despite strong laws Hattas added that society needs to build a stronger consensus and show greater intolerance for abuse and violence to truly protect children. 'Acceptance of violence against children undermines protective norms and practices, sharply increasing children's vulnerability to violations of their rights,' Hattas concluded. 'More must be done to advocate for and protect the rights of every child and young people in the country.' Recent arrests and sentences for child sexual offenders Amid Child Protection Week, the South African Police Service (Saps) has highlighted the recent harsher sentences and arrests against perpetrators who committed crimes against children. Police arrested a 50-year-old man in Brackenfell, Cape Town, on multiple charges, including sexual exploitation, grooming, and facilitating the production of child pornography. ALSO READ: Parents sentenced for murder and abuse of one-year-old daughter Saps spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said the Free State Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Unit traced the suspect to the Western Cape after conducting an extensive investigation into cyber sexual crimes against minors. Recently, a father of three has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his children, aged between three and 13 years. The conviction comes after the children's mother reported the case to the Benoni police on 4 August 2021. The Benoni Regional Court found the father guilty on multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, compelling or causing a minor to masturbate, and exposing genital organs, Pastor sentenced to 2 life terms Furthermore, on 26 May 2025, the Edenburg Regional Court sentenced a 47-year-old pastor to two life terms of imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl. 'As South Africa observes Child Protection Week, the Saps remains committed and dedicated to protecting children's rights and ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes,' Mukhathi said.
