Delhi sees intensified mosquito surveillance to combat vector-borne diseases
Data from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) anti-malaria operations headquarters indicates a substantial increase in house inspections, legal notices issued, and G-8 challans imposed in 2025 compared to the same period last year. This trend highlights enhanced vector surveillance and enforcement throughout the city.
Between January 1 and July 19, 2025, field workers visited over 2.26 crore houses to check for mosquito breeding. This represents nearly a 37 lakh increase compared to 2024, which saw 1.89 crore house visits. Additionally, the numbers surpass those from 2023 (1.97 crore) and 2022 (1.68 crore).
Spraying operations have also picked up pace. So far in 2025, 5.36 lakh houses have been sprayed with insecticides, compared to 2.23 lakh last year and 5.22 lakh in 2023, indicating a 140 per cent increase from 2024 figures.
The number of houses found positive for mosquito larvae has also increased, touching 79,913 this year compared to 49,513 last year, a rise of over 60 per cent, pointing to a possible surge in stagnant water breeding sites, likely aggravated by intermittent monsoon rains.
In terms of legal enforcement, the MCD has issued 64,424 notices to property owners for mosquito-breeding conditions in 2025, up from 44,070 notices in 2024 and 76,131 in 2023.
Additionally, 11,949 prosecutions have been initiated this year, nearly matching the total of 15,607 from 2023.
Officials also imposed G-8 challans (spot fines) worth nearly Rs 9.85 lakh this year, compared to around Rs 7.8 lakh collected by this time last year. As of now, 3,034 challans have been issued in 2025.
Another notable aspect of the mosquito control programme is the biological control approach — releasing larvivorous fish in stagnant water bodies. As of July 19, 282 such spots have been maintained this year, consistent with 2024 and higher than 206 in 2023 and 187 in 2022.
An MCD official highlighted that the intensified house visits, legal action, and fines are aimed at creating deterrence and public awareness.
'The surge in inspections reflects our commitment to controlling vector-borne diseases. However, public cooperation is equally vital. Citizens must ensure there's no stagnant water in and around their homes," the official added. PTI NSM MPL MPL

Need to increase capacity of govt-run Victoria Hospital: CM Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said that there was a need to increase the capacity of the government-run Victoria Hospital as people from across the country seek treatment here. He paid a surprise visit to the hospital along with Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil after his tour to Koppal and Raichur was cancelled due to bad weather. The CM interacted with the patients, including a few from Bihar. "People from across the country come to Victoria Hospital. There is overcrowding. So there is a need to increase its capacity," Siddaramaiah told reporters. The CM said that he has asked the medical team to treat patients with compassion. "Since people are getting free treatment here, there will be too much pressure on the doctors. I have told them to be patient," Siddaramaiah said. He further said that he had given strict instructions that no one should take even a rupee from patients. "I noticed that liver transplant in private hospitals costs about Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, but here it is done free of cost. The demand is to increase the capacity," Siddaramaiah said. According to the CM, presently there are 120 beds available in the gastroenterology department. There is a proposal to make it a 300-bed facility, which the government will consider, he added. Siddaramaiah said during his interaction, patients told him that the doctors took good care of them and proper food was given to them. When reporters highlighted that private ambulance drivers are running a racket here since government ambulances are not available, Siddaramaiah said by dailing 108 people can avail the government service. The 108 services will be restarted, Minister Patil said without elaborating further. The CM said he also visited the Vani Vilas Hospital. More than 40 deliveries take place daily, he said. PTI>

Fortis Healthcare Q1 net profit jumps 57 pc to Rs 260 cr
New Delhi: Fortis Healthcare on Wednesday posted a 57 per cent increase in profit after tax at Rs 260 crore in the June quarter of FY26. The healthcare provider reported a profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 166 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. Revenue increased to Rs 2,167 crore during the period under review as compared to Rs 1,859 crore in the year-ago quarter, Fortis Healthcare said in a statement. "We have witnessed a healthy start to the financial year, as demonstrated in our Q1 earnings for both hospital and diagnostic businesses," Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD and CEO, Fortis Healthcare, stated. The recently executed O&M (operation & management) services agreement with Gleneagles India expands company's geographic footprint and provides an opportunity to leverage combined strengths to optimize operations and enhance efficiencies, he added. The company also consummated the acquisition of Shrimann Superspecialty Hospital in Jalandhar, further strengthening presence in Punjab region with around 1,000 beds, it said. "In the diagnostics business, we have witnessed a strong recovery in both revenues and EBITDA margins, which is reflective of the brand building initiatives undertaken over the last few quarters. We expect this growth momentum to continue going forward," Raghuvanshi stated.>
