Rebel's Romance continues courtship with Royal Ascot

Gulf Today22-06-2025
Rebel's Romance is trainer Charlie Appleby's favourite horse and the two-time Breeder's Cup Turf winner endeared himself further when he won the Hardwicke Stakes.
Described as an 'absolute dude' by jockey William Buick Appleby's last runner of the week delivered the trainer's first win at Royal Ascot since a 1-2 three years ago to the day.
'It is a huge honour to have a horse like this,' said Appleby, whose winner was the first seven-year-old to win the race in 102 years.
'This was the horse we needed with the last roll of the dice, he is a battler.
'He is more than our iron horse he has kept the yard afloat this week.
'He is our stable's favourite and always will be.'
Appleby, who began the season with a bang winning both the English 1000 and 2000 Guineas, shrugged off the ending of the losing run.
'Of course it is not a matter of life and death,' said Appleby, who has taken his tally to 16 Royal Ascot winners.
'If you look at the bigger picture and beyond racing you have got to take the losses and take positives out of it.
'It is the equine Olympics.'
Appleby's mother Patricia was present and concurred with Buick that Rebel's Romance was a 'dude of a horse'.
She also brought her son perhaps the required good omen.
'It has been a very long wait,' she said.
'Last time I wore this yellow dress was when Charlie won the Melbourne Cup (2018) and I have not worn it since.'
Buick has had a far better week than Appleby, landing amongst other races the Ascot Gold Cup for the same owners, Dubai ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Godolphin Operation.
'He is a dream horse. Any jockey fortunate to have in his career a horse like this is blessed,' said the 36-year-old Norway-born jockey.
Meanwhile, Lazzat gave France their first winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes denying Japan their maiden win at Royal Ascot as the gallant Satono Reve finished second on Saturday, the final day of the meeting.
Lazzat's victory rounded off a superb week for owner the Emir of Qatar's Wathnan Racing, a final day double -- both ridden by James Doyle -- taking their tally to five.
Lazzat was France's last hope of salvaging something from the week -- indeed their other two runners in the race fared badly, Sajir being withdrawn and the other Topgear losing two of his horse shoes.
The winner was still in feisty form post winning as he shied away from someone coming to him with a blanket like a matador and dumped Doyle on the turf.
Doyle -- described as 'world class and a brilliant guy' by Wathan's racing manager Richard Brown -- dusted himself down as his 26th Royal Ascot winner disappeared into the distance.
'I cannot take any credit at all,' he said modestly.
'Jerome (Reynier the trainer) was very confident, I could tell Satono Reve was coming alright but you won't get a more genuine horse than this.'
Satono Reve lost little in defeat under Joao Moreira -- known as 'the Magic Man' -- and did better than the previous 10 Japanese runners at the meeting, all of whom had finished outside the first three.
'We came in with a lot of confidence but unfortunately bumped into a very good horse.
'I thought I had him but he had another gear. My horse ran really well.'
'We're best friends.'
Doyle had begun the day with a bang as Humidity emulated his full brother Holloway Boy in 2022 landing the Listed Chesham Stakes for Wathnan Racing. Qatar's joy was Godolphin's despair as hotly fancied favourite Treanmor -- who cost 2million euros ($2.3 million) -- never threatened.
A special day for the winners but also for Dean Sutherland, who has worked at Ascot since June 1981, firstly at the golf course then on the gardening team.

Rebel's Romance claims Grosser Preis von Berlin to register eighth G1 victory

Rebel's Romance recorded his eighth G1 victory and captured the Grosser Preis von Berlin for a second time as he comfortably beat Junko at Hoppegarten on Sunday. Godolphin's most decorated horse was returning to the German course having secured his first top-level success in the same race in 2022, the first of four G1 wins in the country. A superb international campaigner, Rebel's Romance has also gone on to major victories in the United States, where he has won two editions of the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, the UAE, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UK. With Billy Loughnane coming in for the ride, Rebel's Romance broke alertly from his wide draw and the Charlie Appleby-trained seven-year-old tacked over to race in a length second behind Junko. Rebel's Romance closed to within half a length of Junko leaving the back and loomed up on the outside to press for the lead at the top of the straight. Junko rallied after Rebel's Romance established a narrow advantage a furlong and a half out but could not respond to the Godolphin homebred in the closing strides, with three-quarters of a length separating the duo at the line. The victory proved a landmark for Rebel's Romance's sire Dubawi, who has been responsible for 250 Black Type wins in the Godolphin colours. Rebel's Romance is now the most prolific Group winner in the royal blue silks, with 14 Pattern race successes to his name and prize money in excess of £11m, while Billy Loughnane was celebrating a first G1 success in his career. Hugh Anderson, Managing Director of Godolphin (UK and Dubai), said: 'It has been a brilliant afternoon and congratulations to Hoppegarten for a wonderful meeting. It means so much, first for Billy as a young man to win a G1 is fabulous, while Rebel's Romance is a superstar. 'It has been a tremendous weekend and I look forward to talking to our principal, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who will be delighted, as we all are.' Charlie Appleby said: 'What more can you say about Rebel's Romance? He writes his own story. I am delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and team Godolphin, to have a horse who continues to give us such enjoyment at the top level. 'It's a great occasion for Billy, and I'm sure this will be the first of many G1 winners. For him to be able to get his first on a horse like Rebel's Romance, I'm sure it will be a very memorable day. 'I'm delighted for the team, and the story keeps going for Rebel's Romance. It's most likely that he will head for the Canadian International next, and we will form a plan when El Cordobes and Nations Pride return from Saratoga following their runs in the Sword Dancer Stakes.' Billy Loughnane said: 'It's a feeling I can't describe, a feeling of ecstasy. I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and having the opportunity to sit on a horse like this. A big thanks to Will [Buick], I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. Rebel's Romance is a star of a horse' El Cordobes flashes home to take G1 Sword Dancer Stakes El Cordobes enjoyed a perfect US debut as he unleashed a late surge to capture the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 9 August. The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old headed across the Atlantic for his first top-level appearance on the back of several strong efforts in the UK, including winning the G2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival. Vote No was pushed along into an early lead in the 12-furlong contest, with El Cordobes settling on the inner rail in third behind stablemate Nations Pride, until Far Bridge rushed up to go second after the first three furlongs. El Cordobes continued to save ground on the inside, with Padiddle and Rebel Red shuffling the Godolphin runner back to a close sixth halfway down the back. Nations Pride took up the running turning in and soon opened up daylight over the field, with William Buick kicking into a three-length lead approaching the final furlong.

Palace beat Liverpool to lift Community Shield

Crystal Palace twice came from behind to stun a new-look Liverpool and win the Community Shield for the first time on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday. New signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong scored for the Premier League champions, but Palace responded through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr before winning an error-strewn shootout 3-2. Mohamed Salah blazed over from the spot, while Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott were denied by an inspired Dean Henderson as Palace built on winning their first ever major trophy by beating Manchester City in May's FA Cup final. 'We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance. I'm proud of the team,' said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season was given extra significance after a summer marked by tragedy for Liverpool. Forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother Andre Silva. Reds legend Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the side of the pitch before kick-off, while the Liverpool end was awash with banners and flags paying tribute to the Portuguese international. A minute's silence, however, had to be cut short due to disturbances in the crowd. Jota's death has dampened the excitement over Liverpool's transfer spending spree to build on a squad that romped to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. All four of their new signings at a cost of £260 million ($350 million) — Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez — started. Ekitike's role this season could depend on whether Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. But the Frenchman — signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last month for an initial £69 million -- did his case to be Slot's preferred number nine no harm at all. Wirtz also bagged his first assist for the Reds when Ekitike spun onto the German's pass and fired into the far corner after just four minutes. Palace were making their first ever appearance in the fixture but the Eagles again showed their ability to match one of the Premier League's giants over 90 minutes. Mateta missed a glorious chance to level when he failed to beat Alisson Becker when one-on-one. But from the rebound Sarr charged into the box and was tripped by an out-of-sorts Virgil van Dijk. Mateta coolly sent Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot to equalise. Liverpool's players were sporting a 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, that they will wear all season. The Liverpool fans had risen to chant Jota's name as the game entered the 20th minute when their side retook the lead. Frimpong's chipped cross caught out Henderson and flew into the far corner. Ekitike wasted a great chance for his second early in the second half from another Wirtz pass as this time he fired over. However, Slot's new-look side are still to find the right balance between attack and defence as has been evidenced during pre-season. 'The combinations look sometimes sharper now,' said Slot on the difference in his side to last season. 'We are able to create more but we are conceding at the moment more as well. If you want to compete to win the league, you cannot concede these chances. 'We conceded too much today to win the game.' Liverpool's spending in the transfer market may not be over as they continue to be linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. However, Slot dismissed the claim that the transfer spending will put his players under more pressure this season. 'Because we are Liverpool the pressure is always on,' he said. 'That is nothing to do with brining players in.' Palace were a constant threat with balls in behind the Reds' defence and levelled again 13 minutes from time. Sarr sped onto Adam Wharton's through ball and calmly slotted past Alisson for his fourth goal in seven games against Liverpool and sent the game to a shootout without extra-time. Youngster Justin Devenny was the unlikely hero as he blasted the winning spot-kick high past Alisson, showing Salah, Mac Allister and Elliott how it is done. Agencies

Slot's new-look Liverpool under spotlight in Community Shield

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is relishing the rare chance to lift silverware in his side's first game of the season as the new-look Premier League champions face Crystal Palace in Sunday's Community Shield. Despite storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season with four games to spare, the Reds have splashed out, spending nearly £300 million ($402 million) in the transfer market. New forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, plus full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong could get their first chance to impress the Liverpool fans at Wembley. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season sees the winners of the previous season's Premier League and FA Cup face off. 'Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something,' Slot said at his pre-match press conference. 'Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us. 'They showed in the last (FA Cup) final — and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well — how difficult it is to win a one-off game against them.' Palace are appearing in the fixture for the first time after lifting their maiden major trophy by shocking Manchester City 1-0 in May to win the FA Cup. The Eagles' joy has been slightly soured since as they were thrown out of the Europa League and demoted into the Conference League — the third tier of European competition — over a breach of multi-club ownership rules. US businessman John Textor owned a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Despite Textor since selling his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, UEFA deemed Palace failed to meet the deadline to avoid a breach. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace, however, have appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. By contrast to Liverpool's transfer bonanza, Palace have spent just £2 million on Croatian left-back Borna Sosa and a new reserve goalkeeper in Walter Benitez. But the south London club have so far managed to keep hold of all of their prized assets despite interest from English and European giants. Liverpool themselves are keen on Palace captain Marc Guehi, while Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed both players will start at Wembley and believes his side can aim much higher up the table this season after a slow start last year cost them a top-half finish. 'We've started on a completely different level, with a different mindset and different standard we set last year, and this is why we can look forward to the season in a very positive way,' said Glasner. Tributes will be paid before the match to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward who died in a car crash last month at the age of 28. A 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, will be printed on Liverpool's shirts this season. 'Tragedy impacted us but it impacted far more his wife, children and parents,' added Slot. 'The tributes that have been done since were all very emotional and impressive.' Crystal Palace approach clash with Liverpool facing a host of concerns — from injury troubles and underwhelming transfer activity to their pending appeal against UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League. Palace were dropped to UEFA's third-tier Conference League last month in an alleged multi-club ownership breach because John Textor, president of Olympique Lyonnais majority owners Eagle Football Group, also had a controlling stake in Palace. Eagle sold their stake in Palace last month, and the English club appealed against the demotion at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with the hearing set for this month. 'If you have to play in the Conference League, it feels like we have been punished,' Glasner said. 'We hope that this verdict brings us back into the Europa League because, as I said, we haven't done anything wrong.' Agence France-Presse
