The Scottish government has given SSE Plc consent to build what would be the world's biggest offshore wind farm.
The Berwick Bank wind farm, located off the eastern coast of Scotland could provide power to 6 million homes. The 4.1 gigawatt project has been in development for about a decade and this was the final major stage before it can start bidding for government subsidies in the next wind auction starting in August.

Work on Roberts Park footbridge set to begin next week after delay

WORK on the footbridge which connects Saltaire to Roberts Park is taking place from next Monday. Essential maintenance work was moved to August 18 due to 'unforeseen circumstances'. The aim is to make sure work is completed ahead of the new school term. Many Titus Salt School students use the bridge. A diversion, which will be signposted, can be found via the next available bridge which is about half a mile upstream. Footbridge at Roberts Park (Image: Newsquest) The Council said problems have arisen that mean the bridge would be closed for a lot longer than initially scheduled. Officers from Bradford Council were working with the specialist contractors to try to find a solution and keep the closure to a minimum, the Council said. A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: 'Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the work to this bridge will now not be able to go ahead as originally scheduled. 'After discussions between the specialist contractors and officers a solution has been found to keep the bridge closure to a minimum by starting work on Monday, August 18. 'We are aware that the organisers of Saltaire Farmers Market have moved their monthly market to Sunday, August 31, to accommodate the original schedule, and we'd like to apologise to them for any inconvenience that this change in schedule may cause. 'Our contractors are confident that they will have completed the work in time for Sunday, August 31.'

BRADFORD will host the first Great Northern Day – a celebration of all things Northern. Darley Street Market will host the first of what is planned to be an annual event, and will bring together local brands including Seabrook Crisps and Northern Monk brewery. Held in the market's courtyard on Bank Holiday Sunday, the event will bring together food, drink, music and art. Northern Monk brewery, which began in Bradford and recently opened a bar in the market, will join forces with iconic Northern brands including Seabrook, Bundobust, and Great North Pie Co for the event. Running from 11am to 7pm, the event is free to attend. Great Northern Day aims to spotlight the North's contributions to music, food, industry, and design, inviting the whole of the UK to recognise and celebrate the region's cultural impact. The launch event line-up includes: Music from across the North - brass bands, DJs, Bhangra and Northern Soul Exclusive pie collaborations, including Bundobust x Great North Pie Co and Finer Pleasures x MyLahore, and local favourites Taplins butchers, which also has a stall at the market Craft beer from Northern Monk and alcohol-free soda from Hip Pop Northern art market and creative workshops curated by Mek Summat Northern-inspired clothing and merchandise from Northern Power Garms Through the day, there will be music from Punjabi Roots, City of Bradford Brass Band, Back Chat Brass, Jordan Wilson (Northern Soul) and the No Hands DJs. The campaign launches at the Bradford event, with attendees invited to submit design ideas. Northern Monk will take these forward in collaboration with universities and communities across the North and Scotland, and the final flag will be revealed at Great Northern Day 2026. Russell Bisset, founder and managing director of Northern Monk, said: 'The North is the UK region with the strongest sense of identity and pride. But still, it has no shared moment or symbol to celebrate what makes it so special. 'At Northern Monk, we've had a singular mindset from the start - Fresh From the North. We've always believed in the power and potential of community, and our region. 'So as a tribute to the people, places, and culture that shape the North, we've created, and will be creating, two things we hope will last. The Flag of the North - a symbol of Northern unity, resilience, and pride - and Great Northern Day, a celebration of everything that makes the North, the North." Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: 'We're delighted that Northern Monk have chosen our new Darley Street Market as host for the inaugural Great Northern Day. "I think we can all agree there's something pretty special about the North, its people, and our culture - we like a party and we've lots to celebrate. 'The main activity will take place in the Courtyard, and our Darley Street Kitchen will be open as usual. 'Our near neighbours on North Parade, will also be holding their street party on the same day, so there's plenty of fun to be had in the city centre.'

Inspired Pet Nutrition to buy Ultra Premium Direct

Investor-backed Inspired Pet Nutrition (IPN) is buying into France-based direct-to-consumer business Ultra Premium Direct (UPD). CapVest Partners-backed IPN said it has entered 'exclusive discussions' with asset-management firm Eurazeo and other minority shareholders to acquire the online pet-food company. Eurazeo said UPD has established itself as a major player in the French premium pet-food market and is regarded as one of the top direct-to-consumer (D2C) online brands in the category. IPN's proposed acquisition of UPD seeks to create a major independent and international branded pet-food platform in Europe, with a view to building a 'powerful omnichannel strategy' to 'further strengthen loyalty and engagement'. It comes as Inspired Pet Nutrition acquired Sopral last month as it looks to expand its operations in France and Europe. Since acquiring a stake in UPD in 2021, Eurazeo has supported UPD's founders and management in strengthening its brand positioning, expanding its premium product range, and reinforcing its leadership team. The deal is set to be finalised in the fourth quarter, although it is subject to the conclusion and consultation process with the company's trade unions, as well as approval from the competition authorities. CEO of IPN, Arthur van Benthem, said: 'UPD has delivered impressive growth in both sales and profitability and represents a strong strategic addition to IPN. 'It brings with it a sophisticated, proven e-commerce platform with significant international growth potential, a rapidly expanding mono-brand store network, and another outstanding brand to our portfolio.' He added: 'The business is highly complementary to both IPN and Sopral. By combining UPD's direct-to-consumer strengths with Sopral's extensive manufacturing capabilities and IPN's broader network and customer base, we unlock powerful opportunities to accelerate our ambitious growth plans across Europe. Head of Eurazeo's Elevate division, Pierre Meignen, said: 'We are very proud to have supported the founders and management team of UPD through every key stage of their development and to have stood by their side in creating a French leader in the pet-food ecosystem. 'We thank IPN for the trust they have shown in UPD and are confident that this partnership will enable the company to embark on a promising new phase of growth.'
