PETALING JAYA : The domestic trade and cost of living ministry has foiled attempts to misappropriate subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) worth RM2.4 million nationwide from Jan 1, 2024 to April 30 this year.
The ministry's enforcement director-general Azman Adam said 321 cases had been recorded.
He said the latest raid involved a seizure valued at about RM450,000 made at a light industrial area in Seremban on April 30.
He said an initial inspection found the premises had been turned into an illegal storage site for decanting activities, or the transfer of subsidised LPG for households into gas tankers using a compressor pump, for industrial use.
'A total of 976 LPG cylinders, two LPG tanks, a compressor pump, rubber hoses, various other equipment, a tanker lorry and a three-tonne lorry were seized for further investigation.
'The total amount of LPG seized was 17,232kg,' Bernama reported him as saying.
Azman said a 28-year-old man and six foreign workers in their 30s were detained to assist in the investigation.

MACC says assets seized from ‘Tan Sri' in highway sukuk scandal now reach RM143m

KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized assets linked to the misuse of sukuk funds of the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a highway concessionaire with a Tan Sri title totalling RM143 million during an operation conducted last week. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5 million, eight company accounts totalling RM33 million, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5 million, nine cars worth RM7.65 million, and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds (RM6 million), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3 million), foreign assets worth more than RM15 million and around RM20 million in gambling activities. 'Preliminary investigations revealed there was misconduct between 2016 and 2020 involving approved sukuk funds of about RM1.35 billion, involving false claims of about RM360 million and RM416 million and RM50 million in other bank facility loans. 'The RM1.67 billion highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12 million paid to certain parties as inducement in helping the cash flow out and back to the suspect,' he said in a statement last night, adding that the proceeds were also believed to have been used in money laundering activities. He explained that to embezzle the funds, the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies. 'Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is in a private hospital ward and today the investigating officer will get confirmation from the doctor on the status of the Tan Sri's health before recording his statement. 'Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45, and those witnesses who have given their statements have been asked to provide further statements,' he said, adding that the investigating team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The investigation is focused on the true amount of luxury liquor kept by the Tan Sri and the possibility that funds have been transferred to other accounts, he said. He added that an asset declaration notice has been handed to the Tan Sri and other related parties. — Bernama

Anwar looks to deepen ties with new South Korean president

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Lee Jae-myung on his election as South Korea's new president, calling it a turning point for the nation. Lee was declared president earlier today after winning a snap election, taking the helm of a country deeply divided following his predecessor's failed attempt to declare martial law. In a statement, Anwar said South Korea had emerged from a period of intense political contest and scrutiny with resilience and democratic resolve. "The people have spoken for renewal: of trust, of institutions, and of national purpose," he said in a Facebook post. Anwar said he looked forward to working with President Lee to deepen ties in trade, technology, peace, security and people-to-people exchanges. He noted that Malaysia-South Korea relations were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024 — a milestone reflecting both countries' shared ambitions. He hopes that Asean would take on a more prominent role in Seoul's regional outlook. "As chairs of Asean and Apec respectively in 2025, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea are well placed to lead impactful regional initiatives. In a time of global flux, deeper partnership between Southeast Asia and South Korea will be indispensable to us all," he said. Anwar added that he looked forward to meeting President Lee in Kuala Lumpur this October for the Asean-led Summits, and again in Gyeongju for the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting. "Malaysia wishes him wisdom and success in the journey ahead," he said.

Gunning to phase out analogue data, Gobind says Data Digitalisation Policy to be introduced next month

PUTRAJAYA, June 4 — The Digital Ministry will introduce a Data Digitalisation Policy next month to support the enforcement of the Data Sharing Act 2025 (Act 864). Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the policy, developed by the National Digital Department (JDN), will focus on enhancing data quality governance, data security, digital ethics, data storage and usage technologies, and promoting a digital culture in government administration and public service delivery. 'This is important because in order to succeed in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), we must ensure the data we use is in digital form, (but) many government datasets still exist in analogue formats such as images, audio, or hybrids,' Gobind told reporters after chairing the first meeting of the National Data Sharing Committee here yesterday. He said he has given JDN a three-month deadline to finalise the policy and hopes to present it to the Cabinet by July. The minister said the policy will be implemented not only at the federal level but also extended to state governments and local authorities, to ensure consistent data quality for effective policymaking and delivery of public benefits. 'Full digitalisation of government data will allow for better data sharing and analysis using AI, leading to more innovative and realistic cross-sector solutions,' he remarked. Gobind said that the Data Sharing Act 2025, which officially came into force on April 28, provides a structured legal framework for secure and efficient data sharing between federal ministries and agencies, which is expected to enhance public service delivery by allowing real-time data access, accelerating decision-making, and improving coordination without compromising government data security or personal privacy. 'This will lead to a more connected and data-driven government that benefits the people, safeguards their welfare, and drives economic growth,' he said. In fact, he said data sharing between agencies can also eliminate redundancy in data collection, reduce costs, improve public service efficiency, and strengthen public trust through transparency and accountability. 'Shared data ensures policies are planned and implemented based on accurate and up-to-date information,' Gobind said. The minister also expressed hope that state governments would introduce their own data sharing laws to enable effective integration with federal and local government systems. So far, he said the state governments of Penang, Selangor, and Sarawak have responded positively to the proposal. 'I will be visiting each state to discuss the matter directly with chief ministers and menteris besar,' he said. In his remark at the meeting earlier, Gobind said the National Data Sharing Committee, established under the Data Sharing Act 2025, is tasked with setting policy and strategic direction for public sector data sharing. 'We acknowledge the legal and technical challenges in data sharing between public agencies, states, and local authorities. Therefore, it is hoped that this committee will be able to streamline and facilitate secure inter-agency data sharing,' he said. — Bernama
