Moment man falls to his death from hot air balloon in harrowing footage
Harrowing footage has captured the moment a man plunged to his death after clinging to the bottom of a burning hot air balloon.
The tragedy unfolded during the First Balloon Festival, in Zacatecas, Mexico, on Sunday. The horrifying clip showed flames consuming the lower half of the balloon mid-flight. Thick black smoke can be seen pouring into the sky - and as the fire intensifies, a lone figure is seen dangling desperately from a rope beneath the blaze, before falling.
The Secretary General of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, said a participant had "lost his life" after an "unfortunate incident" while on board a hot air balloon.
In a statement posted to social media, Mugüerza said: "Immediately, authorities rushed to the scene to provide care and support to the affected people.
"We have requested the State Prosecutor's Office to carry out the relevant investigations to clarify the facts and disclose responsibilities. We urge all municipal authorities to strengthen their verification mechanisms to avoid such risks during the development of their activities and festivities."
The man, identified only by local news outlet Riviera Maya News as a 40-year-old Luicio N, died from his injuries. He is believed to have been inside the balloon with two other people when the fire broke out while the group were still on the ground.
As reported by the Mirror, Luicio reportedly helped the other two passengers escape but got stuck in the rope while the balloon started to move.
He was then lifted into the air and clung onto the rope several feet below the fire before the fatal drop. The horrifying clip went viral on social media, with many viewers rushing to comment on the tragic incident.
"This man is a hero. That being said. I don't go in hot air balloons for a reason," one person said. "Heartbreaking. His final act was one of courage and sacrifice. May he rest in peace," another wrote.
"What a tragic and heroic story. Luicio's final act of selflessness, trying to save others while facing his own peril, speaks volumes about the strength of the human spirit. RIP to him. His courage will not be forgotten," a third added.
While hot air ballooning carries certain risks, fatal accidents remain extremely rare.
According to data from Gitnux, the mortality rate is less than 0.01% per flight, with only around 1 to 2 accidents per 100,000 journeys - making it statistically safer than many other forms of aviation.

Shocking moment schoolboy is 'beaten up by man' on London Overground train
A troubling video of the incident sparked fury online - it showed a young schoolboy being violently flung across a London Overground carriage as passengers watched on Disturbing footage shows the moment a schoolboy appears to be beaten by an adult and flung around a London train carriage as passengers watch on. The broad daylight attack was filmed and shared across social media platforms where it sparked fury after gaining hundreds of thousands of views. In the clip, the attacker can be heard calling himself "a big man" while throwing the helpless boy from one side of the carriage to another. Fellow passengers, including young children, are seen watching the shocking scenes unfold, while a woman off-camera is heard laughing amid the chaos. The teenager was reportedly attacked on a London Overground service from Watford to London on Thursday, July 24, as the train approached Carpenders Park station. A British Transport Police spokesperson told the Mirror: "Officers received a crime report from Hertfordshire Police after a 13-year-old boy was assaulted on a train at Watford High Street railway station at around 4pm on a date in late July. Enquiries are ongoing." The clip comes after a number of disturbing incidents across UK rail and Tube networks. Earlier this month, police launched an investigation into a group who dragged a man off a London Underground train after he exposed himself. A troubling video of the incident emerged online showing the man - who was later detained under the Mental Health Act - being thrown to the floor and kicked after being hauled off the District Line from Upton Park to East Ham on August 7 at around 3.30pm. Before the fight kicked off, he is said to have been shouting and placing a belt around his neck. When he removed his trousers, things escalated and the group became involved. spokesperson for the British Transport Police (BTP) said the incident is being treated as an assault and appealed for anyone who witnessed it to get in touch. In July, two teenagers were tragically killed on a railway line at Poynton Station in Cheshire - prompting services to be shut off as emergency services scrambled to the scene. Police were called to a "casualty" at the station shortly before 10.30pm on July 3. The British Transport Police, who are leading the investigation, said their deaths are not being treated as suspicious. Officials closed railway lines so that medics could reach the teenagers.
