Young Scots to represent Great Britain at top European fitness event in the Netherlands

Daily Recorda day ago

Brodie McKenzie and Anna Jamieson are preparing to do Ayrshire and Scotland proud this weekend.
Two young Scots are to represent Great Britain at a top fitness event on the continent this weekend.
Ayrshire's Brodie McKenzie, 15, and Anna Jamieson, 11, are the only athletes from north of the border heading to the European Functional Fitness Championships in Holland.
Both train out of eeVo Training in Prestwick and will compete against more than 300 athletes from 26 European nations in one of the sport's most competitive events.
Functional Fitness is the structured, sport-governed version of CrossFit – combining strength, endurance, power, skill, and gymnastics.
Events are judged to international standards and provide a clear competitive pathway to European and World Championships.
The girls qualified for the GB squad after finishing in the top three at the British Functional Fitness Trials in Sheffield earlier this year.
The gym's Liam Walker told Ayrshire Live: 'Anna currently trains in eeVo's Kids Programme and will soon transition into the Teens pathway.
'Brodie has been a part of the eeVo Teens Programme since starting secondary school and continues to develop as one of the gym's most consistent young athletes.
'Both girls are proudly following in the footsteps of two of their coaches at eeVo – Kirstin Walker and Alexa Ferguson – who have represented Team GB at the Functional Fitness World Championships for the past two years.
'This is a major moment for both athletes and a proud milestone for the Ayrshire community.'

Fagerson will 'come back stronger' from Lions blow

Zander Fagerson will "come back stronger" from his British and Irish Lions heartache, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has 29-year-old Glasgow Warriors prop was one of eight Scots selected for the Lions tour to Australia this summer but has been ruled out because of injury."He picked up his injury on Thursday and it was a new injury," Townsend told the BBC's Scotland Rugby Podcast."He was in the final stages of his recovery from his previous injury and I was still hoping maybe they'll still take him, he's going to be out for a period of time, but that didn't transpire, which is really unfortunate for Zander. "He was in brilliant form for us in the Six Nations. He was in a real strong position to play Test rugby for the Lions, so to have that taken away, we know what happens in a sporting career and a rugby career, that you get injured at the wrong time, but he'll bounce back, he'll come back stronger."He has with previous injuries and he's still young, young for a tighthead too, so if it doesn't happen this time, I'm sure he'll be an even better place to be a test Lion in four years time."Townsend suggested that, while he was pleased with the Scottish representation in the Lions squad, even more Scots could have been likes of Darcy Graham, Tom Jordan, Ben White, Jamie Ritchie and Rory Darge were all considered to be in contention and Townsend says those players have responded well to the disappointment of missing Scotland based in New Zealand and Fiji for their summer tour matches against the Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa, the head coach says they have a great opportunity to keep themselves in the minds of the Lions coaches when injuries inevitably take a further toll on the squad."I think the most pleasing aspect of the players is how well they've played and how they've responded to the news they weren't going to be in the Lions tour," Townsend said."Darcy scored a hat-trick the week after he wasn't selected. Rory was man of the match against Stormers, he's been playing excellently. Jamie's carried on his really good form, as has Tom Jordan."They're still playing very good rugby, if not even better rugby than they played in the Six Nations, so that's going to put them in the best position possible if there were changes to that Lions squad, which, if you go on history, it's going to happen."Already we've had one change to the tour party, unfortunately for Zander, but there's likely to be more when you play games and you've got the travel throughout Australia, which is tougher to recover from from game to game."

I haven't been inside Celtic Park since my last game – here's why I'll be a different person when I return says Tierney

And he insists Celtic fans can expect to see different man from the young 22-year-old who last walked off the pitch before his mega money move to Arsenal six years ago. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Tierney signed a pre-contact with Celtic as his Arsenal contract entered it's final six months Credit: Celtic FC Tierney, 28, has officially returned to Parkhead on a five-year deal after months of waiting. SunSport were first to reveal on December 18 that Brendan Rodgers was readying a move for the Scotland international who was coming to the end of his Arsenal contract. A month later the manager confirmed the £25million man was on his way back. And today the Scottish champions finally revealed the left-back was back in Glasgow and ready to make his mark at Celtic Park once again. Speaking to Celtic TV, Tierney said: 'I think it was perfect timing for everybody. 'It had been in the works before but it wasn't able to happen. 'This time, though, everything just fell into place. 'I spoke with the manager and obviously I'd worked with the gaffer before. 'I've always kept in touch with him, so he's one of the best and I'm so lucky and grateful he's given me the chance to come back again." Tierney made 170 appearances for the Hoops in his first spell at the club. Will Celtic will get value for money on Kieran Tierney's HUGE wages asks Kris Boyd The Scotland international revealed that he hasn't been back inside his favourite stadium since he quit the club for Arsenal. He said: 'When I drive by it the odd time, it's a strange feeling. "It just brings back emotions and memories. 'And today, watching the video, it just comes flooding back to you; all the feelings and the historic times we had together. 'It's an amazing feeling and I just can't wait to go back inside again.' The Celtic academy graduate didn't take much convincing when the opportunity to rejoin the Hoops came about, especially under Rodgers' stewardship. The left-back said: 'He [Rodgers] never had to convince me much. 'It's just a huge bonus he's the manager because I loved working with him, I think he's one of the best. 'He knows how to get the best out of me and I just loved my time under him. 'He's a great person I've always kept in touch with. 'John Kennedy as well, someone I've always kept in touch with and who I still meet regularly when I'm back. 'And Cal and Jamesy who I've been close with now since I was 17. It's been a long time and what they've done at the club has been incredible." CELTIC'S MOST EXPENSIVE DEPARTURES 1. Matt O'Riley - 2024/25 2. Jota - 2023/24 3. Kieran Tierney - 2019/20 4. Moussa Dembele -2018/19 5. Odsonne Edouard - 2021/22 Having tasted European knockout football in his time away from Celtic, Tierney can't wait to bring his experience back to the Hoops' European nights. 'It was unbelievable, the Bayern Munich game, when we scored it was the biggest high and the biggest low conceding in the last minute. 'I think it just shows the journey that the club's been on. 'Not just one or two years, but the last six or seven years has been building towards making a mark in Europe and I believe the current squad can do it. 'They showed it this year as well." After picking up an FA Cup and two Community Shield's, the 28-year-old is hungry to add more silverware to his collection. He said: 'That's part of playing for Celtic and it's the pressure of playing for Celtic. 'You need to win trophies and you're disappointed when you don't. 'Obviously, these last few years I haven't won too many. 'I hope to come back here and win as many as I can and for Celtic to be as successful as possible." Man Utd have two transfer options on table after 'drastic Bryan Mbeumo U-turn'

Manchester United have a big decision to make in their pursuit of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo after reportedly seeing their first bid for the player rejected A crossroads stands before Manchester United in their hunt to sign Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo this summer. And with transfer funds not exactly flowing at Old Trafford right now, it could prove definitive for their other investments in the coming months. United's opening offer of £55million for the player was reportedly turned down by Brentford. And though another bid is believed to be imminent, Ruben Amorim's side would do well to take stock of their options before launching a follow-up. ‌ Despite finishing at an all-time low of 15th in the Premier League and failing to qualify for Europe next term, United at least have some cards in their hand. That's after The Athletic reported Mbeumo, who was keen to join a Champions League club, now has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford despite interest from the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle. ‌ That U-turn, after both those clubs were linked with Mbeumo in January, tilts the transfer battle in United's favour. Tottenham have also been mooted as a suitor amid talks that Thomas Frank is set to take over in north London, though murmurs suggest Mbeumo values the United cause above Spurs' upcoming European adventure. It's a similar sequence of events that saw Amorim land Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha in such swift fashion. The Brazil international was keen to play for United above all else next term, underlining United still have serious pulling power despite their absence from European competition next season. It's believed the Bees are seeking upwards of £60m to part ways with their player, an almighty fee considering United already shelled out £62.5m for Cunha. But if the Red Devils want their man they may just have to suck it up. Man United's second option is to finance the deal by parting ways with Alejandro Garnacho, which many might deem an inevitability already this summer. Argentinian newspaper Ole has suggested AC Milan have opened talks to sign Garnacho and are seeking a deal worth £50m. That's £15m short of United's supposed valuation of the player, though it may be enough to convince them, considering Amorim's difficult relationship with the 20-year-old. ‌ That sum also wouldn't quite cover the outlay required to recruit Mbeumo, who would come at a higher cost to the wage bill. However, it's a convenient route to offloading one troublesome asset while signing what would effectively be his replacement. Except Mbeumo plays almost exclusively on the right wing, while the majority of Garnacho's minutes are spent more centrally and on the left flank. It also poses the question as to what lies in store for Cunha and whether he's intended to start up front, behind the striker or out wide. Amad Diallo has just started coming into his own under Amorim, and he too operates almost solely off the right. After several years of overcoming injuries, managerial changes and loan spells away from Old Trafford, it would be a shame to see the 22-year-old's progress halted now. ‌ Yet United are in dire need of results now and can ill afford to bid their time on the hope of what may come down the line. In that sense, Mbeumo would be a proven Premier League upgrade based on what's been seen of the player in recent seasons. The Cameroon international finished this season with 20 goals and eight assists and appeared in each of Brentford's 38 league games. But he wouldn't be the first big investment to impress elsewhere before falling flat under the increased pressure at United. The Red Devils will be expected to fork out a heavy sum regardless of how Mbeumo arrives at the club. But the manner in which they balance the books could play a major role in how far the club can afford to invest elsewhere this summer.
