India, Canada working on reinstatement of High Commissioners: MEA
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday stated that India and Canada are working to reinstate the High Commissioners to each other's capitals. The move follows efforts to normalise relations that had deteriorated sharply last year.
At a press briefing, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney had reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties during a meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. He added that both sides agreed to take constructive steps to 'restore stability' in the relationship.
'We had issued a press release when we had the last meeting of PM Modi with Prime Minister Carney, on the sidelines of G7 in Kananaskis in Alberta. Both leaders then reaffirmed the importance of India-Canada ties based on shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides agreed to take calibrated and constructive steps to restore stability in the relationship, beginning with the early return of high commissioners to each other's capitals,' Randhir Jaiswal said.
'That was what was agreed between the prime ministers. Both countries are now working on this particular matter,' he added.
Diplomatic tensions between the two nations flared up last year after then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that his government had 'credible allegations' of India's involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023.
India had strongly denied the charges, calling them 'absurd' and 'motivated.' In response, India recalled six diplomats, including its High Commissioner to Canada, after they were labelled 'persons of interest' by Canadian authorities investigating the killing. India also expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Canada's High Commissioner to India.
Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023.
With Mark Carney now serving as the Canadian Prime Minister after Trudeau's resignation, both countries appear to be taking steps to improve ties. According to MEA, PM Modi and PM Carney had a 'key meeting' at the G7 Summit where they discussed ways to restore and strengthen the bilateral relationship.
India and Canada also agreed to resume senior and working-level mechanisms and discussions in various areas, including: trade, people-to-people contact, connectivity and collaboration in key areas like, cooperating on clean energy and technology initiatives, collaborating on digital infrastructure projects, exploring opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence and discussing potential collaboration on food security and critical minerals. Uttarakhand CM directs officials to run special campaigns to resolve pending complaints
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 26 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to run a special campaign to resolve complaints pending for more than 180 days in the CM Helpline 1905. Expressing displeasure, the Chief Minister issued strict instructions to the officials, stating that action would be taken against officers who failed to dispose of the cases promptly. While instructing not to close public complaints unnecessarily, he stated that more effective efforts should be made to bring the CM Helpline up to the best practices of the state. While reviewing CM Helpline 1905 in the Secretariat on Thursday, the Chief Minister directed officials to organise Tehsil Diwas across the entire state on a single day. The Chief Minister directed all District Magistrates to organise Janta Darshan, Tehsil Diwas, and BDC meetings regularly for the speedy resolution of public problems. 'Encroachment and verification campaigns should be run more effectively by the police and administration together. Work should be done rapidly towards making two villages in each district as Adarsh Gram, for this, nodal officers should be appointed in all the districts soon,' CM Dhami said. The Chief Minister directed that wherever the condition of electricity poles and transformers is bad in the state, they should be replaced immediately. 'Safety audit of all transformers should also be done. It should be ensured that there is no problem of low voltage and hanging electricity wires; if such cases are found, strict action will be taken against the concerned officers,' he said. The Chief Minister directed the officers associated with all the authorities to ensure that there is no pendency in passing the maps of people's houses. He said that the three districts that become TB-free first will be honoured. The Chief Minister praised the Transport, Agriculture, Social Welfare, Excise, and Energy Departments for their efforts in resolving complaints through the CM Helpline. The Chief Minister directed the Public Works Department, Geology and Mining, Revenue, Home, and Finance Departments to expedite the redressal of complaints further. The CM Helpline is receiving more complaints related to drinking water, street light maintenance, connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, power cuts, and electricity bills. The Chief Minister also spoke to the complainants of the CM Helpline during the meeting. On the complaint of Upendra Singh Rawat of Uttarkashi regarding the drinking water line, the Chief Minister directed the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi to resolve his problem within a week. Alam from Haridwar had complained about street lights; his problem has been resolved. Hridesh Negi of Dehradun said that work has started on his complaint regarding the construction of a culvert. Gaurav Nautiyal of Chamoli's complaint regarding drinking water has also been resolved. Devendra's complaint about low voltage from Nainital has also been resolved. (ANI)

India's oil import from Iran
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs clarified India's position on importing crude oil from Iran on thursday, stating that energy purchases are based on 'market factors and the prevailing global situation.' 'Our energy requirements, or the energy purchases we make, are based on market factors and the prevailing global situation,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in THEIR weekly briefing. Further, the Ministry also expressed deep concerns about the situation in West Asia, including the Israeli attacks on nuclear scientists and certain universities in Iran. In response to a question about targeting science students and scientists, the MEA spokesperson emphasised India's commitment to peace and diplomacy. 'As you would have seen in our statement earlier as well, we expressed deep concerns about the recent escalation of the situation in West Asia, including the attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. Subsequently, we have welcomed the ceasefire, as you would have seen,' Jaiswal stated. The MEA spokesperson noted that India is closely monitoring updates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the radiation levels at the affected sites. 'India is closely following updates from the IAEA about the radiation levels in the affected sites,' the spokesperson said. 'We have noted that so far, IAEA has reported that the targeted facilities either confirmed no nuclear material or small quantities of natural or low-enriched uranium, and that radioactive contamination has been limited to the buildings affected by the strikes. We urge a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy for an early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability,' Jaiswal affirmed. (ANI)

Tripura Govt has given priority to overall development of tribals: CM Saha
Sepahijala (Tripura) [India], June 26 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday said that the government has given priority to education, health, communication, and the overall development of the tribals under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister said this while inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of various development projects under the Bishalgarh subdivision of Sepahijala district. Speaking at the event, Saha said that seven new projects have been inaugurated in Bishalgarh, and the foundation stone of five projects has been laid. 'Earlier, we inaugurated the newly constructed building of Madhupur Higher Secondary School. The total cost for these 13 projects has been estimated at about Rs 28.72 crore. On June 20, I went to inaugurate a total of 19 projects in Sabroom of the South district. About Rs 32 crore will be spent there too. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that there will be no talk without development. He has given importance to all-around development. And we, the double-engine government, are also working in that direction. In just a few months from January to June 2025, I inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of more than Rs 638.65 crore worth of various projects in different places. There is no end to development,' he said. He said that the government's priorities are education, health, communication, and the overall development of the people. 'Along with this, special emphasis has been given to self-reliance. Before 2018, there were only four to four and a half thousand self-help groups in the state. Now, there are about 56,000 self-help groups. They have been given a revolving fund of more than Rs 700 crore. Funds are also being given by banks. The government has given importance to women's empowerment. Arrangements have been made for 33% reservation for them. All fees have been waived for female students in all general degree colleges in the state. Pink toilets have been arranged at various places. Fifty per cent reservation has been made for women in the distribution of government stalls. For the safety of women, women-run police stations have been set up in eight districts of the state,' said Saha. In his speech, the Chief Minister said that in the coming days, Tripura will have to be made more prosperous by utilising the resources of the state. At the event, Saha said that the Prime Minister has emphasised providing housing. 'For this purpose, about 4.5 lakh houses have been built in Tripura. About 87 per cent of the tap water program for drinking water has been implemented. The Prime Minister has given special importance to the development of the North-Eastern region. And development is possible where there is peace. Earlier, we saw murder, terrorism, rape, arson. Our double-engine government is showing that a government can be run apart from corruption,' he added. MLA Sushanta Deb, MLA Antara Sarkar Deb, Sepahijala District Sabhadhipati Supriya Das Dutta, District Magistrate Siddharth Shiv Jaiswal, Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma, Director of Health Department Dr. Tapan Majumdar, and other prominent persons were present as distinguished guests at the event.
