Son Heung-min Breaks Down During Emotional Farewell In His Final Game For Spurs: WATCH
Son Heung-min bid an emotional farewell to Tottenham in South Korea after a decade. Spurs' pre-season friendly against Newcastle ended 1-1, overshadowed by Son's send-off.
An emotional chapter came to a close on Sunday evening as Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min bid farewell to the club in his homeland of South Korea.
The 33-year-old forward, who confirmed this weekend that he will leave Spurs after a decade of service, was visibly moved during his send-off at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
The pre-season friendly between Spurs and Newcastle United ended in a 1-1 draw, but the result was a footnote to the outpouring of love and gratitude for Son from teammates, opponents, and the 65,000 fans in attendance.

Son started the match and played 65 minutes in what may have been his final appearance for Tottenham. Although he didn't find the back of the net, his presence alone electrified the crowd, many of whom came draped in South Korean colors and Spurs kits bearing his name.
His teammates looked determined to give him a farewell goal—repeatedly feeding him the ball early in the match—but Son was caught offside twice and struggled to make a decisive impact. When he was substituted for Mohammed Kudus midway through the second half, he left the field in tears to a thunderous ovation, embracing teammates and even Newcastle players before taking his seat on the bench.
'An Unforgettable Day"
'I didn't think I was going to cry at first," Son admitted afterward. 'But after hearing a few words from my teammates, leaving the club I've spent so much time with felt really tough."
'I felt really, really happy playing this match. Thanks to my fans, my teammates, and also my opponents, I've had an unforgettable day."
Son declined to confirm where he will play next season, although he has been strongly linked with Major League Soccer's Los Angeles FC. 'Nothing has been finalised," he said.
A Goal and a Tribute
Tottenham's Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well-placed right-footed strike—and celebrated with Son's trademark camera pose in tribute to the departing captain.
Newcastle equalised in the 38th minute through Harvey Barnes, whose shot bounced in off the post past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Son, who joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, has become one of the most beloved players in the club's modern era, with over 350 appearances and 160+ goals to his name. He is also South Korea's all-time leading scorer and national team captain.

Son Heung-Min Completes Record Switch To MLS Outfit LAFC
Last Updated: The 33-year-old Son, who netted 173 times for Tottenham in over 450 appearances for the club, joined LAFC on a MLS record $26 million deal. South Korean superstar Son Heung-Min completed his move to MLS outfit LAFC on Thursday after a decade-long spell with Premier League club Tottenham. Son, who netted 173 times for Tottenham in over 450 appearances for the club, helmed the Spurs side that clinched the UEFA Europa League title with their win over fellow PL side Manchester United in the final of the event last season to put an end to a 17-year title drought for the London-based side. A new era begins in Black & Gold. — LAFC (@LAFC) August 6, 2025 Son was in attendance during LAFC's 1-2 defeat against Tigres UNAL in the Leagues Cup on Wednesday and added that he was raring to go for his new side. 'I'm here to win, and I will perform," the 33-year-old said. 'It was just, like, insane. I just wanted to run onto the pitch and show my performance," he said touching up on his new side's game on Wednesday. 'Sonny is a global icon and one of the most dynamic and accomplished players in world football," said LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington. 'We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career," he added. Son opened up on Thorrington's role in bringing him to Los Angeles. 'If I'm honest, it was not my first choice," he said. 'But first call, when I talked to John after the season finished, he just changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's new NBA deal exceeds entire 2013–14 Spurs team salary under fresh cap rules
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's new NBA deal exceeds entire 2013–14 Spurs team salary under fresh cap rules (Image Source: Getty Images) A shocking pay comparison is drawing wide attention in basketball circles. One star now pocketing more in a single season than a full championship team did a decade ago says a lot about how NBA finances have escalated, with one player alone rewriting what we expect from contracts today. Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander secures record‑breaking contract paying more than 2013‑14 Spurs payroll On July 8, Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander, reigning NBA MVP and Finals MVP, signed a four‑year supermax extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The deal averages about $68.1 million per year, making it the highest annual salary in NBA history. — RTNBA (@RTNBA) By contrast, the entire San Antonio Spurs active roster in the 2013–14 championship season made roughly $63.5 million combined. Essentially, one season's pay for Gilgeous‑Alexander now surpasses the total earned by an entire title‑winning Spurs team. How salary cap growth and superstar status created this historic pay gap This big difference in pay is because of the rising NBA salary cap. In 2013–14, the cap was $58.68 million. In 2025, it had grown to over $140 million. This jump is mostly due to new TV deals and the 2023 agreement between players and the league. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's new deal is huge. In the 2025-26 season, he will make around $38.3 million. In 2026-27, it goes up to $40.8 million. By 2029-30, it could be more than $70 million. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On average, he will earn about $68 million per year. That's the highest yearly pay for any NBA player. Shai is only 26 years old. He had a great year before signing this contract. He won the MVP, was the top scorer, and won the Finals MVP too. He helped the Oklahoma City Thunder win their first NBA title since 2008. The San Antonio Spurs in 2013–14 was very different. That team had legends like Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. They all played together with a team-first mindset. Their total team salary was only $63.5 million that year. Still, they won the championship. The gunners suffered a second loss in a row. Last week, the team faced a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur and ended the Asian tour on a poor note. The two back-to-back losses for Arsenal came after victories over AC Milan and Newcastle United in Singapore to begin their summer schedule. Nicolas Pépé, who joined Villarreal in the 2024 summer season, just took 17 minutes following his return to north London to open the scoring for his team, turning the ball in from close range after the visitors recycled possession from Pape Gueye, who struck the post. Before Villarreal, Pépé played for Arsenal, and he was the second most expensive signing in the club's history. Following the first goal in the match, he did not celebrate creating several opportunities to equalize, Mikel Arteta's team conceded another goal from Villarreal, making the scoreline read 2-0. It was another close-range rebound from Etta Eyong, in the right place at the right time in the 33rd minute, to convert after Raya initially saved from Gerard being 2-0 down in the first half, Arsenal came from behind and pulled a goal back in the 36th minute. Christian Nørgaard scored his first goal for the club since his arrival from Brentford. After a rough start to the second half, Villarreal regained their two-goal lead. Arnaut Danjuma, who was once on loan at Tottenham, made it happen. He launched a quick counterattack and calmly placed a shot across Raya into the bottom corner, even as Mosquera rushed to block like before, Arsenal fought back after going down by two goals. Young star Max Dowman drew a penalty, and substitute Martin Ødegaard scored from the spot with 16 minutes remaining. But the Gunners couldn't find a third is set to be in action again on Saturday (August 9, 2025), and with the Premier League season starting just eight days later, the days of making lots of halftime substitutions are over. Instead, Arteta made only two changes at halftime, giving Martín Zubimendi and Cristhian Mosquera valuable minutes and unofficial home debuts, replacing Nørgaard and Ben White, respectively.
