Race track to MLB field: Bristol's transformation shifts into high gear

Turning a race track into a baseball field worthy of hosting Major League Baseball takes time and a plan. Demolition started in early June with heavy construction now in high gear to transform Bristol Motor Speedway into a ballpark — if only for the Aug. 2 Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds in the first MLB game in the state of Tennessee. As of Tuesday, Bristol no longer is a racetrack. 'It's not going to be good to have a 2-foot wall ... in the outfield for a player to run into, so naturally those had to go,' Steve Swift, senior vice president of operations development for Speedway Motorsports, said. Turning this track into a ballpark requires about 17,500 tons of gravel to level the infield. Murray Cook, president of BrightView Sports Turf Division, said trucks will start bringing in 340 tons of Pennsylvania clay for the playing surface later this week. The grass will be synthetic with 124,000 square feet set to be laid down with this field using the same surface as the Blue Jays in Toronto. There will be fencing, padding and foul poles. Musco Sports Lighting is adding 215 lights to the top of the track so no ball should be lost in a shadow. 'The field obviously is a big part of this event, and we're making it as Major League level as it needs to be for this game,' Cook said. Hosting an MLB game requires much more than just a field. BaAM is helping MLB and Bristol so that the teams have locker rooms complete with showers, strength and conditioning rooms, coach and trainers' offices, batting cages and even a full weight room. 'Everything that we're going to do is temporary in nature, and it's been precisely planned layers and layers," BaAM president Annemarie Roe said. "We have about 33 days from today until we hand over to baseball operations.' There will be grandstands down both the first- and third-base lines with broadcast booths, camera platforms, media positions and video replay included along with audio and video components. Concessions and merchandise will be available for fans on game day. For any players wanting to go over the wall, they'll have to carry 400 feet to clear centerfield, 375 in the alleys and 330 down each base line. True renovations always reveal something owners don't expect. Same goes for Bristol officials who found out they won't have to replace everything after Aug. 2. Swift said they won't have to replace the Sunoco pumps and tanks with NASCAR now bringing those to each race. The Sunoco signs also are gone to avoid sitting in centerfield. Half an infield building was removed to clear space for the outfield wall. Bristol has loads of experience with extreme track makeovers from bringing in dump trucks of dirt for races. This track hosted a college football game in the Battle of Bristol, drawing an NCAA-record 156,990 fans in 2016. Interest has been big, and MLB is planning a lot of events before the first pitch with Pitbull and Tim McGraw already set for a pregame concert from a stage in the infield. Country star Jake Owen will highlight more performances outside the track announced Tuesday. The fan zone also will feature the Commissioner's Trophy, a 110-foot Ferris Wheel, a food truck row, pitching tunnels and batting cages, team mascots and being Bristol — branded MLB stock cars for photos. Bristol will have a chance at the record for the largest crowd to see a baseball game. A March 2008 exhibition between the Red Sox and Dodgers at Los Angeles Coliseum drew 115,300. Once the Reds and Braves wrap up and all the fans leave, the next challenge begins. Bristol will race against the clock to turn the field back into a track for a night race in the NASCAR playoffs Sept. 13. 'There's the right way, the wrong way, and the speedway,' Swift said. ___

US investigates Tesla's Robotaxi launch after videos show erratically driving cars

The US' main transportation safety regulator is requesting information from Tesla after videos showed the company's self-driving Robotaxis exceeding the speed limit or veering into the wrong lane. The company launched the service in Austin, Texas, over the weekend. Tesla heavily promoted the initial, limited rollout of its Robotaxis, which included pro-Tesla influencers using the paid ride service and showing off footage of their trips. Instead of positive promotion, though, those videos appear to have drawn scrutiny from the US National Highway Transit Safety Administration (NHTSA), as the cars struggled to comply with traffic laws. 'NHTSA is aware of the referenced incidents and is in contact with the manufacturer to gather additional information,' the agency said in a statement. The Robotaxi's debut over the weekend featured around 10 cars with 'safety drivers' in the front passenger seat driving around a circumscribed area of Austin. Although Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, touted the launch as a huge success and vowed it would make driving safer, several influencers posted videos that appeared to show their Robotaxis glitching or speeding. One video – posted by a Tesla investor who formerly hosted a podcast about the company – showed the Robotaxi wobbling as it misjudged a left turn, then going into a lane meant for oncoming traffic before driving across a double yellow line back into the correct lane. No cars were in the lane intended for oncoming traffic at the time. In another video, a pro-Tesla YouTuber praised how the car was going several miles over the speed limit. Musk has bet a large part of the automaker's future on its Robotaxi program, for years selling a vision of the future where millions of his driverless cars roam cities all over the world. Both watchdogs and investors are closely scrutinizing if Tesla can make the possibility into a reality or whether it joins a long list of Musk's missed promises. 'I predict that there will be millions of Teslas operating fully autonomously in the second half of next year,' Musk said during an earnings call in April. He made a similar statement in 2019. The NHTSA does not pre-approve new technologies or driving systems, it said in a statement. Instead, manufacturers certify their vehicles meet agency standards, then investigators look into potential safety defects. The NHTSA assesses reports and relevant information then decides on how to address road safety issues. 'NHTSA will continue to enforce the law on all manufacturers of motor vehicles and equipment, in accordance with the Vehicle Safety Act and our data-driven, risk-based investigative process,' the agency stated. While revenues have declined, Musk has vowed Tesla's Robotaxis will become the future of transportation. In addition to its preliminary probe into Robotaxis, the NHTSA also has an open investigation into Tesla, begun in 2024, over whether the automaker's 'Full-Self Driving' mode is safe during conditions that reduce roadway visibility. A Tesla allegedly using the autonomous feature struck and killed a 71-year-old woman in 2023 while the sun was setting and casting glare over the road in Arizona.

The 2026 Nissan Leaf is Bad News For These 5 EVs

With new looks and stellar range, the redesigned 2026 Nissan Leaf really puts some other EVs on notice Nissan has brought a bunch of changes to the longest-running electric vehicle in its portfolio, the Leaf. The changes elevate the aging Leaf to a real competitor in the affordable, small, electric SUV segment. While it sounds like a very specific niche, it's actually full of solid options, but almost none of them hold a candle to what Nissan's bringing to market in the 2026 Leaf. 2026 Nissan Leaf 2026 Nissan Leaf 2026 Nissan Leaf The entry-level Leaf will tout a nice 147 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, but won't be available until after the initial release of the higher trim levels. All other models will sport a 214-horsepower, 75-kWh battery pack. Range for the Nissan Leaf S Plus — the second step up the ladder — is the best for the model at 303 miles. We're guessing the base Leaf will command around $34,000, with the Leaf S Plus offered from around $36,000. A completely revised interior space brings the Leaf in line with other offerings in 2025; two 12.3-inch screens and standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto translate to all anyone ever needs. The car manages to be around the same length and width as the little hatchback model that preceded it. Impressively, that doesn't mean skimping on cargo space, as folding the rear seats down opens 56 cubic feet of space. Total the numbers, and you get a car that's a lot more than the sum of its parts, and adds up to bad news for the current segment leaders. 2026 Nissan Leaf vs. Hyundai Kona Electric Hyundai's small electric SUV is a fairly competent car that delivers solid range and starts around the same price as the 2026 Nissan Leaf. Like the Leaf, you need to step up to at least the second rung of the trim ladder to get the most range. At 261 miles of range, the $36,975 Kona Electric SEL offers considerably less range for what we assume will be very similar cash. Additionally, the standard car makes do with a paltry 133 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, so acceleration will likely feel quite sluggish compared to the Leaf. Especially around town, which is where many of these small SUVs live their best lives. 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric N Line Thankfully, the Kona Electric comes feature-rich in SEL guise. The Hyundai is thus still fairly competitive from the driver's seat, as long as you aren't heavy on the accelerator. Cargo space is a bit better, too, with total room topping out at 63.7 cubic feet. Regardless, it may be hard for some shoppers to get past the lower range and power figures for almost the same price. Both Korean SUVs face similar troubles when compared against the 2026 Nissan Leaf. Kia only offers the 201-horsepower powertrain in the Niro EV, which is down from the 236 horsepower in the Leaf S. We have no qualms about comparing a base Niro EV to the Leaf S Plus, because the Niro starts at the high price of $40,995 after delivery, likely almost 10% more than the Leaf. 2025 Kia Niro EV 2025 Kia Niro EV Price is definitely the biggest part of why the Leaf is bad news for Kia, but it's also working with a standard 10.3-inch driver's display, down from 12.3 in the Leaf. Cargo space is identical to the Hyundai at 63.7 cubic feet, quite a bit more than Nissan can offer. However, due to the steep upcharge and reduced range and power, we think it will be challenging to persuade shoppers to switch from the Leaf to a Niro EV. 2026 Nissan Leaf vs. Volvo EX30 You might not think a Nissan goes head-to-head with a luxury automaker like Volvo, but the stats are pretty surprising on the EX30. The 2026 Nissan Leaf offers more total cargo space, with the Volvo only fitting 31.9 cubic feet of stuff inside. The Volvo EX30 also maxes out at 275 miles of range, much less than the Nissan's 303 miles of range. While the all-wheel drive Scandinavian shreds the Nissan in a drag race, the 422-horsepower, all-wheel drive model starts at a whopping $46,195 before delivery fees. With no real end in sight to the delays hampering the more affordable front-wheel drive version, the Volvo EX30 doesn't have a lot to offer EV drivers who aren't getting into an EV for the performance metrics. Volvo EX30 — Source: Volvo 2026 Nissan Leaf vs. MINI Countryman Electric MINI, on paper, is a brand that should've taken to electrification like a bird to the sky. Instead, slow rollout and less-than-stellar offerings have kept the brand where it's always been: in a narrow niche of the market. The Countryman EV, therefore, hardly remains competitive with the 2026 Nissan Leaf. Unless you're dead-set on the specific personality of a MINI — and likely a bit better handling — there's almost nothing the Countryman gets you that the Leaf doesn't offer. Except, of course, an extra 100 horsepower. At that point, though, you might be better off with the Volvo. The Countryman EV starts at $46,375, closer to the Volvo than the Nissan. For your money, you get 212 miles of range, nearly 100 miles less than the 2026 Nissan Leaf. Cargo space is also nearly identical to the Leaf's at 56.2 cubic feet. Unless you really need the extra horsepower and all-wheel drive, the Leaf is a great way to save around $10,000 over the Countryman EV. 2025 MINI Countryman SE ALL4 — Source: MINI 2026 Nissan Leaf vs. Tesla Model Y The Model Y is a staple of the segment, and it's arguable that it remains the value king. But with politics against Tesla's side and lots of people looking for alternatives, Tesla may lose some sales to the newly competent 2026 Nissan Leaf. Both cars are around the same price, but only if you include the $7,500 rebate the Model Y enjoys, which, remember, not everyone is eligible for. The Leaf, then, offers 50 miles less range, a bit less power, and less cargo space. The Leaf will probably also hold value a smidge better than the Tesla, but that remains to be seen. Tesla Model Y — Source: Tesla Final thoughts The 2026 Nissan Leaf is a quantum leap forward for both the nameplate and Nissan's reputation as an electric vehicle manufacturer. Its much-needed refresh means Nissan has at least one enticing electric offering, which may count for a lot when you consider the brand's hazy future. We're glad Nissan gave the Leaf the attention it deserves, and look forward to rival automakers like Hyundai, Kia, and Tesla evolving to keep pace. About the Author Steven Paul View Profile
